figgis··on Why Go is my favorite programming language
> Do you carefully review your own code?

Do you have any resources for getting better at this? I don't get a lot of chances for other people to review what I write (yeah believe me I know..) and am looking into better ways to make sure I don't release shit.

I have a decent amount of testing automated for a majority of my projects but that's turning into an extra job on-top of my already demanding job.

figgis··on DeepMind and Blizzard Open StarCraft II as an AI Research Environment
Personal experience tells me it's a pretty common thing across the US.

> I don't want to be overly semantic or PC on HN

Proceeds to be overly semantic or PC on HN...

figgis··on Detecting Chrome headless
We both must be misunderstanding, because those first two points are blatantly false as far as I can tell. Selenium can handle(?) invalid SSL certs but the defaults certainly don't freely accept them.

As for the third point.. That's why we have DMZ's..

figgis··on Myspace lets you hijack any account just by knowing the person’s birthday
Of course it does..
figgis··on Block-breaking game in vim 8.0
If it works in vim it should work in neovim?
figgis··on The Botmakers Who Rule the Obsessive World of Streetware
> Most scripts are either headless chrome instances using phantom is or selenium.

I would think that using regular HTTP requests is better/more popular then running a headless browser for this kind of work. cUrl, Python Requests, etc.

figgis··on Thunderbird’s Future Home
I personally use sup, but that's exactly how I did it. All you have to do is add a small hook, explained on a multitude of Mutt wiki pages. What issue did you have with images? I just have images set to xdg-open my picture viewer.

figgis··on Lake Michigan Is So Clear Its Shipwrecks Are Visible from the Air
Looked up x+1

https://www.abine.com/blog/2012/x1/

[x+1] is a data-driven marketing tool that profiles consumers as they browse online, which in turn lets companies estimate the lifetime value of those potential customers. It also lets companies target people in most of the places they go online: their email inboxes, their chats, the websites they visit, and more.

figgis··on Linux becoming a professional multimedia platform
I imagine it's much easier to maintain a working release for one distro and allow the package maintainers for other distros to package it how they need. Than it is to provide support for the endless amount of distros out there.
figgis··on A curated list of Terminal frameworks, plugins and resources
By as nice do you mean the colors and font? If so I use oh-my-zsh as a base config and build up from there.

figgis··on A curated list of Terminal frameworks, plugins and resources
I spent a few minutes making as many mistakes in a terminal I could to give an idea of what zsh can do. I'm not sure if it is what you are looking for but hopefully it's helpful and if not oh well.

figgis··on Nielsen estimates ESPN lost 555,000 subscribers during the last month
You order a subscription to various channels via cable, satellite, etc.

Shows are run on a schedule, television sets usually include the ability to set recordings for showings. Most people just set it to record the newest episode of every show they want to watch and catch up their shows that way, deleting watched shows as needed. Unless it's a show they are really interested in and obviously you can tune in to the scheduled showing if you remember the time.

The subscriptions you purchase usually include a set amount of local or regional channels (depending on where you live). You can also pick up local channels via an antenna or similar methods.

It's hard to be a sports fan without cable. They have blackouts on games where channels can't display games based on your region.[0] Or not being able to stream certain games online for a multitude of reasons.

figgis··on Boom Wants to Bring Supersonic Civilian Travel Back
It's worth noting I know at least Delta offers "bereavement fares" and I would be surprised if the other airlines did not offer the same discounted service.
figgis··on DDoS Attack Against Dyn Managed DNS
Eh the name implies (at least in that context) this website would be used to keep track of the hackers.
figgis··on Vim for Humans
I don't think you need a plugin for that? set mouse=a, unless I am missing something
figgis··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
But could you describe the general structure?

Yeah expecting many people to be able write out a complete http request from memory without a reference to look at. But the general structure of a http request is something so basic to web development that asking what the structure of a http request looks like isn't an unreasonable expectation.

Request line (method, uri), header(s), empty, body...

figgis··on Why GitHub Finally Abandoned Its Bossless Workplace
And this has been going on since it's inception, and I am hoping it finally bites them in the butt.

Every single other marketplace even slightly similar to Valve has support that outshines Valve in every single way possible.

EA with their Origin client launch did a fantastic job with customer service and making sure they are keeping as many people that actually use Origin, happy. (yeah we all love to hate them, but they got this one right.) I thought it would go to crap quickly but from my (admittedly limited) experience and what I have heard it is still great.

I am actually scared that should my steam account get hacked I will lose everything. I've used steam for many many years. I've put more money than I should have into it (400+ games) and now I have to be extremely careful that nothing I do screws my account because there is a very good chance that it will go unresolved and I will be out all of that time/money.

Whenever I look to get a game, I buy them any way I possibly can outside of steam before I turn to their platform.

I believe there is time for Valve to turn it around. There are many things they have certainly done right. They've done a great job pushing for Linux, especially since I moved to linux only gaming over a year and a half ago. They've helped Indie developers and modders bring their creations to a unified platform.

figgis··on Acetaminophen use in pregnancy linked to child's behavioral problems
Can you expand on what non-drug methods you are speaking about? And whether you are speaking about immediate relief or long term relief? These drugs used are usually used for immediate pain.
figgis··on Ask HN: What keeps you from exercising?
Just a suggestion that goes along (slightly) with your theme. Pick up hiking and hit all the trails you couldn't with your bike?
figgis··on Confirmed: Walmart buys Jet.com for $3B in cash
I apologize, I think I replied to the wrong comment.
figgis··on Building fast.com
The actual tool I was suggesting was what I was saying works great. speedtest-cli has a lot more options available to you that a simple wget does not have.

It provides cleaner information quicker. Yeah you could certainly setup a cron job using wget and have it do everything you want it too down to the bits it changes in memory... That just offers a quicker way to do all you may want too with that information.

figgis··on Building fast.com
I believe you replied to the wrong person. I never made that claim unless I am going crazy.

speedtest-cli has a lot to offer as a tool

figgis··on Confirmed: Walmart buys Jet.com for $3B in cash
> When a consumer buys a product on their site - they have employees purchase from retailers or suppliers and ship.

Walmart brings the solution to that to the table. They already have the merchandise, and infrastructure. While the general opinion of Walmart is that they are terrible, Walmart's distribution and transportation infrastructure is King in that world.

Currently Jet.com fulfills orders by just going to the stores and purchasing and shipping.

figgis··on Building fast.com
Could you clarify the question?
figgis··on Building fast.com
I did that, works great and with speed test cli it (did it without that at first) it's even better!

https://github.com/sivel/speedtest-cli

If you are going to setup a cronjob/service for it, I suggest using the --simple flag.

figgis··on A molecule called ‘Sandman’ could help solve the ‘mystery of sleep’
That's just the simulation mixing it up. If I am going to use a simulation as an escape it sure as hell is going to be single player.
figgis··on Ask HN: Anonymous person sent proof of SSH access to our production server
On fail2ban, I have had more success in being able to stop attacks quickly by using SSHGuard. Quicker easier setup, easier to understand, etc. Is there a significant reason to use fail2ban over sshguard?
figgis··on Introducing Vulkan-Hpp – Open-Source Vulkan C++ API
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe once you reach a certain karma point(s) you receive the down vote arrow. Maybe reporting posts goes along with that?
figgis··on The Lounge – Self-hosted web IRC client
Yeah I apologize, at the time it just seemed like a feature that would be universal to chrome/chromium. Guess chrome os doesn't have it.
