fiftyacorn··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
Is it not the case that any tariff would apply to US made tesla's where the majority of the global stock is made in China, so wouldnt necessarily be affected?
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: How can I think more like an engineer?
Not so much thinking - but actions. Roll up your sleeves and take ownership of issues and understand it as best you can before asking for help. If you ask for help then you should be able to say "I think this does ..." rather than "I dont know how this works"
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What books influenced your moral compass?
Ernest Bevin by Andrew Adonis is a biography of Bevin from his poor roots to being in charge of the TUC during labour. It's interesting to note that when Churchill had to decide between backing Beaverbrook or Bevin he chose Bevin, and why you see Bevin next to Churchill in the famous VE day photos. Bevin approach of working with business to achieve collective bargaining outcomes that worked for both sides, and demonstrates how hard fought this battle was. He wasn't perfect, but an interesting man
fiftyacorn··on The doctor who gave himself an ulcer and solved a medical mystery (2010)
but they could have equally proved it by giving antibiotics to people with ulcers

it would be interesting if there was a body of evidence of people being cured of ulcers following antibiotics around the same time

fiftyacorn··on The doctor who gave himself an ulcer and solved a medical mystery (2010)
It's great practical science but the basis of the research was a photo showing the bacteria in the stomach lining, which was against the accepted belief at the time. So the experiment confirmed what they already knew, at least that's how I remember them explaining it in a documentary
fiftyacorn··on How Much Do Udemy Instructors Make (2024)
I created a course a long time ago - didnt generate that much but was only about 3 weeks work - but it did improve my understanding of the subject, and also made it easier to get work and consultancy opportunities

It comes down to how you view the opportunity

fiftyacorn··on Social Trust Score
Its similar to the Orville episode "Majority Rule"
fiftyacorn··on Where is London's most central sheep?
Edinburgh used to have 2000 sheep on Arthurs seat right in the center of town until the early 80s.

There were urban legends about student pranks of putting sheep into the halls of residence rooms

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2024
Its in quotes as im not sure how well calibrated it is - tbh it prob is miles

I do wish it had ant support - i keep thinking i should write an app using an ant sensor on it

Speedwise im doing around 10mph

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
I didnt realise the ship was in a museum - Dundee has the discovery museum for Scotts ship which is good for a visit too
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2024

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2024
Yoyo desk bike - i bought it for a bit of fun thinking if it wasnt any good id get rid of it, but its really good fun. Ill do 20-30 "miles" on it in the morning - just tapping away and it helps me concentrate

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Recommend me some silent movies
I like david Bowie at the start doing the introduction
fiftyacorn··on MIT Aluminum Bicycle Project 1974 (2016)
For me the biggest innovation in bicycles was Graeme Obree -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Obree

With his "old faithful" bike he built himself

I was looking at it in the museum last week and it still impresses me how intuitive he was about cycling. Things like integrating the pedal and shoe to save on height, and also reducing the q-number with the narrow bottom bracket.

I remember doing time trials with Graeme before he had created "old faithful" and he was just incredible

Graeme wrote a book on training a few years ago - its very home brew - but he was ahead of his time saying that you need to ride 25-28mm tyres on the road, rather than the 20-23 which were fashionable at the time.

fiftyacorn··on Magic Circle tries to track down first female member – who posed as a man

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
Ive got a yoyo bike desk - love it. Being able to pedal an hour or 2 while working

I just wish it had ant+ support - i keep thinking of adding a cadence meter then calibrate it to a .fit file. but then never have the time

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
Yo Yo Desk Bike - bought it second hand as a bit of fun. Figured if it was rubbish id sell it again

But its really good - I spend my first hour or two at work pedalling away while working

I dont class it as real exercise but its good fun

fiftyacorn··on Owe your banker £1k you are at his mercy; owe him £1m the position is reversed (2019)
We need to revisit this after the credit crunch -

"Owe Your Banker £1k You are at his mercy; Owe Him £1M the position is reversed; But if everyone owes the banker £1M then its everyone's problem"

fiftyacorn··on The mystery of why left-handers are so much rarer (2016)

fiftyacorn··on Show HN: The Living Museum – Explore the British Museum with AI
Nice work a lot of the artifacts were discussed on the history of the world in 100 objects podcast a few years ago
fiftyacorn··on A lonely man in his 30s found welcome and community at spin class
It depends on what sort of club or ride you end up in. If you end up in a competitive group/club then its harder to make friends as people are focused on racing or the sportives and just want to get the training done

While if you choose to go the cafe ride groups then you'll have people just out for a ride and a chat.

fiftyacorn··on 1913: When Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud and Stalin all lived in the same place

fiftyacorn··on Study: Playing D&D helps autistic players in social interactions
From experience it can be hard to judge whether participation in the banter is truly them putting themselves in the context of the game, or just mirroring the existing banter
fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What books should I read to improve as a software engineer?
I think learning about how your applications will be supported once live is important so always recommend the Google SRE book.

I think the most important chapter is on Simplicity of your build and code.

Definitely worth a read

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: What's your secret sauce for maintaining product quality?
I do code reviews as part of team meetings - so assign someone to review the code, then walk it thru in the meeting. It allows us to be clear on the expectations and discuss changes

The key is to not make it an ego led session to keep discussion open

fiftyacorn··on Ask HN: How do you work as a tech lead?
I think this depends on the dev - some devs will contact immediately when there are issues, and others suffer in silence.

It comes down to devs who are good at communicating, and those who arent, and shows the importance of communication as a skill. I'd take a weaker dev who is good at communicating over one who suffers in silence everytime
