fav_collector··on Nearly half of US medical visits are at emergency rooms
Especially when it covers non-citizens and people who are illegally in the country.

We could at least have a little compromise by making health care more tiered so that citizens, payers and people with insurance receive better health care than others. Make a list of services that will only be provided to payers and automatically push non-payers to the back of the queue.

fav_collector··on My Google job was tedious and pointless
I read the OP post as "not everyone deserves an interesting and fulfilling job" rather than "only engineers deserve an interesting job"
fav_collector··on How Emotional Labor is Dragging Down Gender Equality
This is the number one skill I've been trying to learn at work. Too many minor decisions add up and severely hurt productivity if they aren't resolved quickly.
fav_collector··on Facebook's underclass: staffers enjoy perks, contractors barely get by
Well no, the company would still be a net positive to the employee. Without the company, the employee would be making an even lower wage or unemployed.
fav_collector··on Facebook's underclass: staffers enjoy perks, contractors barely get by
That isn't a reasonable expectation. Morally speaking, companies should be expected to pay market rate for the job and anything above that is charity.
fav_collector··on Forget Equifax. Facebook and Google Have the Data That Should Worry You
Protection through obscurity. If the NSA needs to go through the legal process to access data, the chances of them looking through your data is much lower than if they had unrestricted access. The cost of data inquiry discourages data inquiries.

What government regulations are relevant in this case?
fav_collector··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
> There are certainly many talented people who move away from tech

Let's be honest, most biology majors turned programmers aren't oppressed people who had passion for tech but were discouraged from tech by terrible, systemic biases. They're people who either couldn't make it to med school or didn't want to go to med school who realized that there is more $$$ in the tech field than in biology research.

> It's a bit cynical to say that's done simply in the name of gender.

Not really. In this context, that is exactly what the parent was saying. Again, there are many non-CS majors that give people skills more relevant to programming. There isn't much of a reason to specifically recruit biology majors (other than for demographic reasons or if the company software is related to biology).

fav_collector··on Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t
> recruit junior devs from the ranks of biology grad

Targeting specific groups just because of the racial or gender makeup of the group seems inherently wrong to me.

A biology major doesn't give people many relevant skills for programming. If it was a math intensive subject like Physics, Stats or Math, I could see it being more fair and valid.

It has more to do with her political involvement and activism than her gender or race. There will always be people who dislike polarizing political figures.
fav_collector··on [dead]
These massive breaches sort of scare but at the same time sort of relieve me. If everyone has their information leaked, there is a low chance that any one person will be an identity theft victim.
fav_collector··on U.S. judge says LinkedIn cannot block startup from public profile data
Does this ruling include regular anti-scraping defenses that might stop HiQ, but doesn't specifically target them?

fav_collector··on Prostitution decriminalized: Rhode Island’s experiment
Because that's more political and it was an opinion piece. This is more "technical" and neutral.

HN flags both anti and pro women's agency articles (most opinion articles actually) so it is fair.

fav_collector··on Prostitution decriminalized: Rhode Island’s experiment
$600,000/yr isn't that outlandish. You just need 30+ reports or do really good IC work
fav_collector··on Tech is the best industry for women
To be fair, articles that cover this topic are almost always clickbait.

Getting a job is mostly meritocratic.

1. Many companies have a low interview bar. Anyone with a CS BS degree can get an interview at at least a few good companies. If not, you can spend time creating interesting Github projects to boost your chances.

2. Your performance in the interview usually depends on the amount of time you spend studying algorithms.

3. Most knowledge and skills in the industry can be found one click away. General software engineering jobs are self-learnable as long as you have an internet service and a web browsing device.

fav_collector··on Firefox marketshare revisited
I agree although ctrl+shift+q is still suboptimal because ctrl+shift+tab is right next to it.
fav_collector··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
How do you find these less popular subreddits?
fav_collector··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
It's organized well for finding information but it lacks the "human" element in a social community. You're just anonymous person #4214 who's interested in cars or football.

In the good old days with forums, people were recognizable with avatars and signatures. People chatted about everything, not just the topic at hand, so the personality of each person had a large spectrum. The communities were small enough where people formed an identity and reputation. Many times they even connected their real life identity in "post your picture" threads.

Reddit has effectively killed many forums without replacing that human community aspect and it's kind of sad.

fav_collector··on Airbnb host must pay $5,000 for canceling reservation based on race
I think people should be able to discriminate for anything they want when letting others into their home whether it's a business related visit or not.

However I think that people should be punished for explicitly commenting on protected classes in a hateful or angry manner in business related situations.

fav_collector··on Dev Bootcamp Shutting Down
I'm guessing not very diverse at all since most people had to float 6 months+ without income.
fav_collector··on I'm not a Woman in Tech
> That is, most companies (regardless of conscious choice) are finding the best (young, white) male developers only.

The implication here is that earned (through training) software and programming skills are equally distributed among the entire population. This is simply not true just by looking at StackOverflow/CS major demographics.

They are finding the best female developers. There just aren't that many (for whatever reason)

fav_collector··on I'm not a Woman in Tech
The problem is that the strategies used to "fix" the original, supposed discrimination are sins by themselves. Affirmative action is plain racism/sexism without the history aspect.

There is no quantification (or even validation really) of the supposed discrimination. People don't look bother trying to figure out what actions would make the scale equal. They are completely concentrated on moving the scale in one direction only and never check the balancing.

People must believe that there is discrimination is always so severe that any necessary evil used to balance it out is justified.

fav_collector··on Ebay will match Amazon’s, Walmart’s and others’ prices on over 50K items
Isn't quality control at B&M stores better?

Fulfilled and shipped by Amazon.com items can still be intermingled with rando sellers from China whereas Walmart will source directly from a manufacturer or a large, billion dollar wholesaler who cares about reputation (I think)

I've been spooked by intermingling and default to BestBuy for big ticket electronics
