Don't go there.
failwhaleshark··on Bill Cosby to Be Freed as Court Overturns His Sex Assault Conviction
Bill Cosby, Brock Turner, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jeffrey Epstein... If you have the right pedigree, you get a rape pass. All 4 relied on inebriation.
failwhaleshark··on IBM's 18-month company-wide email system migration has been a disaster: sources
It definitely wasn't a Coyote Creek migration.

Christ, pay me $10M and I'll bring an army of 30 geeks to turnaround this landfill fire. I did a startup that M&A'ed organization email providers of all sorts (Exchange, postfix, sendmail, etc.) to aggregate them for efficiencies at scale.

1. Tested and complete backups

2. Sample testing

3. mbox migrations

4. Exceptions handling

5. Further testing

6. Cutover

failwhaleshark··on Donald Rumsfeld Has Died
Justice in this life. They are some of the worst criminals still alive. They deserve it for their untold tens of millions of victims.
failwhaleshark··on Intuit sabotages the Child Tax Credit
Most Scandinavian countries compute taxes for you. If you approve of the government calculations, it's easy to finalize it.
failwhaleshark··on Intuit sabotages the Child Tax Credit
Every other government in the world doesn't have corrupt leadership, corrupt and unfair tax codes. If taxes were straightforward, then why would anyone have to compute them manually except for edge-cases, which a government representative could assist with?
failwhaleshark··on Intuit sabotages the Child Tax Credit
Intuit sabotages simplification of the tax code through corruption and regulatory capture.
failwhaleshark··on San Jose to require owners of firearms to pay back taxpayers for gun violence
More collective punishment of law-abiding people. I'm glad I moved out of California.
failwhaleshark··on What’s an Intellivision Amico? Console’s leaky dev portal offers hints
I was forced to play on an Intellivision. It was awful and uncool back then. The controllers were completely awkward. Why would I want to relive that now?

S/NES, Sega Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16 are cool.

failwhaleshark··on Asking developers to do QA is broken – why anyone should own QA
The only silver bullet is approximated by a holistic approach.
failwhaleshark··on Asking developers to do QA is broken – why anyone should own QA
Yep. Fire the aholes and the egos, and keep the messianic figures who go-give and get shit done.
failwhaleshark··on Asking developers to do QA is broken – why anyone should own QA
Communication is great until someone becomes unreasonable and doesn't want to do something. Trust but the chain-of-command must verify. Shouldn't need to, but it should be there as insurance.
failwhaleshark··on Asking developers to do QA is broken – why anyone should own QA
Terrible idea.

The dev team manager is focused on growing new features in the next release.

QA is focused on the excellent of the current release.

Subordinating quality to new releases is the result.

In a similar situation, devops supposedly addressed similar tensions of dev and ops.

failwhaleshark··on Bill Gates was an office bully who opposed diversity efforts, report claims
I agree.

Reparations: who can be found living that was harmed? I wish someone harmed could be found. It seems difficult and messy to assign how much cash and to who to give it to, and then where do you stop?

Diversity points: They're insulting to all people who work hard. This sets back an individual and tells them they don't have to do as much because of fashionable identity political concerns. Merit should be the only decider.

Aid: Get people who are presently-struggling compared to other groups the direct help they need to compete.

What is with throwing away standardized testing? Are multiple choice questions "racist" now?

What exactly is "diversity?" I can understand avoiding biases of people who inadvertently hire people they like who look like themselves, but smart hiring managers can analyze accomplishments and test candidates for potential. Talent is better than whatever identity bingo game is being played to meet "inclusion" goals. I go to the UK to get away from American touchiness about race and gender.. there, with very good friends and colleagues, you can take the piss out of each other with absurd epithets in private and everyone knows it's not meant.

failwhaleshark··on Note that I wouldn’t pass the listed minimum requirements
Maybe. They could be fearing being disliked, estranged, or an argument for having the "wrong" beliefs. (Politics, religion, computer languages.)

Much like gossip, politics is pack violence and order by other means, and is usable by people who have less physical power but more social influence. If you don't have either physical and social power, then you're dismissed as not a threat and ripe to be stepped-on. Gossip is often a political attack technique to take-down a physically-strong leader.

failwhaleshark··on Note that I wouldn’t pass the listed minimum requirements
It's the HR equivalent of posting "experienced applicants only" signs.

Résumés: There are too many liars and too many lazy hiring managers and HR who will let anything pass.

Certifications: Skills tend to be inversely proportional to most certs.

Buzzword bingo: Okay, fine, I'll grocery list everything to check the robotic résumé scanner's boxes.

In truth, "minimum requirements" are wish lists and "preferred skills" are wet dreams.

I swear, modern HR operates like a person trying to find their soulmate with one meaningless signal.

failwhaleshark··on Black Hat Exploits of the Stupid-Easy 80s
Before carbonless, the carbon slips between the layers. There were up to 4 additional copies make on some of those kinds of forms and you'd have to press very hard with a ballpoint pen in order to get it to register at the bottom. Then, the credit card imprinter had to press the card to get through them.

Since most cards don't have raised numbers anymore, manual credit card imprinting is no longer possible.

failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Help, my boss wants to us to use laptops from 2011 for development
Try it first until it breaks from a nonfunctional# requirement-perspective.

# Requirements other than correct functionality: fast, responsiveness, appearance, easy-to-read, etc.

Slap a cheap/fast SSD and more RAM in them if they're worth it.

Everyone should burn the website buyafuckingssd.com in their brain. Do not use spinning rust for almost anything except archival.

failwhaleshark··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
Yes, first-mover advantage per category, i.e., Pebble. There is also last-mover advantage, i.e., Apple Watch. If you get the FMA, you have to go big ASAP and continue to dominate.
failwhaleshark··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
Goddamn right. The cool magic is the different in the retail cost compared to the undeniable awesome experienced by people other than yourself. Make that difference as wide as possible and people will beat down your door for more.

These days for food products, it seems damn important to have pricing either go insanely-low for bulk/budget (dollar store) or moderately-high for ultra-premium (WF, Costco, Sams).

failwhaleshark··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend
Misleading title.

The best consumer products sell themselves with network effects of word-of-mouth. It can be very slow or very fast.

If you wanted to launch a new sauce, I would give difficult-to-open-completely bottles to restaurants in major cities and say "We're trialing a new sauce that's ready for market. And we'd like to trial it exclusively at your [appropriately trendy for demographic] restaurant in XYZ, WQ. Can we ship it to the restaurant's address?"

failwhaleshark··on Thousands without power during record-breaking heat
Remember that in Palo Alto, CA, most homes were built without A/C like Portland too. The summers were sweltering in PA in recent memory (2012-2018).

Wichita Falls, TX used to be "the tornado capital of the world", but now it's Berkshire, Greater London, UK.

France: 15k heatwave deaths in 2003 due its unexpected nature, 1.5k in 2019

--

The underlying issue is increasing weather variability. It is a symptom of a lack of latitudinal stability in jet-stream patterns. This is caused by the climate change warming (increased absorbed system energy) of the Arctic. There will be a blue ocean event there very soon since ice is already <5k km^3 in the summers. What this means is wilder weather (and storms) everywhere.

failwhaleshark··on Challenges in the diagnosis of magnesium status
Salad (nothing but vegetables) has the effect of increasing mechanical fullness before a meal.

Plain, boiled potatoes cause the most satiety.

Oranges and oatmeal are also good.

failwhaleshark··on The economics of dollar stores
Don't even hate on my dollar stores (coworker made a mint on the Dollar Tree IPO... Grr!;)

Okay, good.

There have been numerous agenda (economic? class superiority?) articles about "dollars stores: bad." Somehow that they're racist or responsible for food deserts, poverty, crime, and your grandma yelling at the cleaning lady.

failwhaleshark··on Men are rapidly losing their close friends, poll finds
I must be the weird American who thinks the word "friend" still means something. Acquaintances and Facebook friends don't mean squat to me without aligned interests and/or repeatedly-observed indicators of character. And, I don't have time for unnecessary online "social"-climbing, people who waste my time, drag me down, or mooch.

- had you at a disadvantage but never exploited it

- someone who helps you move a couch and a desk

- lend a book to and always get it back

- lend a small amount of money to and always get it back

- leave something at their place and they tell you about it

- can count on them for a couch if you get locked-out

The closest of friends:

- you would kill for them and vice-versa

- you trust them implicitly with everything: secrets, material, and family

- you could be mistaken for family and/or your families blend together to where no one can really tell who-is-with-who

failwhaleshark··on Men are rapidly losing their close friends, poll finds
I lived in vehicles for ~9 years and dwindled down to 3 elderly, frail, sane homeless guys as friends (mostly, it was me helping them and I didn't expect anything in return).

- Be a friend to have friends.

- Be the source of the party, activities, and adventures. Do not wait around for anyone else to ask first, or it's waiting for Godot.

- Make everything an ADVENTURE! Going to get milk: ADVENTURE TIME! B) :D Ridiculousness on 11 with a broken knob.

- Bring more than there was before: stuff, energy, liveliness, etc.

- Be early or late.

- Always leave while everyone is still having a good time.

- Say "no" with frustration and schedule something concrete immediately.

- Exponentially-backoff after 2-3 texts / 1-2 calls.

- All of the "Let's do lunch people" who aren't interested in concrete plans are just being "nice" dicks, wasting your time and theirs.

- If people just want your number without anything else, they're trying to exit (and ghost you).

- Thank people with specific, personalized notes (cards or emails) after invites. Cards, where possible.

- Ask for people's birthdays and anniversaries.

- When you create contacts of people, demonstrate getting details like birth day and month and anniversary. It shows you don't just view people as ephemeral leads to the next networking event.

- Give people time to miss you but not time for forget you.

- You're only as good as your last impression.

- Lookout for the needs of others, listen, and don't be a greedy or selfish dick.

- Not as a moral judgement but have integrity: reliable, fair, keeps confidence, and trustworthy. If a particular cleaning or cleanup task should be absolutely necessary, there is no doubt about its conclusion.

- Dissuade a friend's worst proclivities while helping them see new abilities and capacities.

- Sense of humor: find it, grab it with both hands, and squeeze. Sorry, ma'am, I was making a point here with my 259 new internet friends who are such bastards who never invite me anywhere. Don't mind me, I'm just a terrible, weird, ugly, boring, desperate person dragging this cross along... don't even think of helping now that you didn't invite me. How dare you!? Good day to you, I say. I said "good day!" There is the door. Stop reading!

failwhaleshark··on Austin cyclists split on sharing bike lanes with pizza delivery robots
In the real world, those who act criminally in regards to mis-delivered and misaddressed mail: no one is going to jail for mis-delivered or misaddressed mail unless they offended the wrong important person or were dumb enough to get caught.

Incidentally, we've been having numerous postal issues at my complex because it doesn't have a full-time carrier assigned to the route. It's so bad, I had to get a PO Box.

My neighbors must be mostly thieves (keep) or too lazy (throw away) to bother correctly redelivering mis-delivered letters or packages most of the time. They are surprised like you're a fool for making an effort to redeliver them correctly. The complex is 98% white-collar, third-tier college graduates, single, between 24 and 35. I've had electronics, clothing, and random articles left in my box and at my door... these are mis-deliveries.

Misaddressed mail would be wrong name but correct address.

failwhaleshark··on Austin cyclists split on sharing bike lanes with pizza delivery robots
Hazzard Fraught sent, to my name AND my address, an entire case of Fein-type multi-tools without an invoice. They can suck it because law.

I however didn't go candy is the new toliet paper-hoarding Grinch over lazily mis-delivered snacks by doing the couriers' job for them. Maybe I shouldn't have because replacements, but neighbors and candy usually involves kids. Neighbors didn't even say "thanks," so I definitely should've kept them. No good deed ever gets you anywhere, kids; you must always appear to do something half benevolent and half selfish with an audience. Be Vito Corleone. Make them an offer they can't refuse. Since it was was couriered instead of postal mailed, postal laws don't apply and it reverts to property and commerce laws. Now if I conspired to give them half if they said they didn't receive it, that would've been conspiracy to commit fraud.

failwhaleshark··on Austin cyclists split on sharing bike lanes with pizza delivery robots
I don't have any problems with properly-stowed transportation implements.

Docks take-up too much room and would suck-up real-estate from the public commonwealth for private, exclusive use... too much of that is already happening. Underutilized "bikeshare" pod programs stole large areas of curbside real-estate while offering nothing in return for all residents (unless they paid money).

It's a Tragedy of the Commons-situation knowingly-created by these irresponsible, asshole rental companies for $$$ by not demanding proper parking from the asshole segment of their customer-base.

I've seen piles of these goddamn things on street corners, rendering entire sidewalks unusable in orthogonal directions.

Elimination of all asshats who throw scooters in the middle of public commons and thoroughfares. These incidents are why they are banned from large areas of town and on certain campuses.

They should just be banned period. Full stop. Bring your own, or rent one you can carry and must return. Ephemeral transactionality leads to this sort of Idiocracy-backdrop bullshit:
