factormeta··on Show HN: Boardzilla, a framework for making web-based board games
there is nothing wrong with Typescript, but it is the react part that worries me. Wouldn't you want something more light weight on the front end than react for games? Like svelt, marko or solid?
factormeta··on Svelte Native
Capcitor with solid or marko would be better, more lightweight.
factormeta··on BrowserEngineKit – Apple Developer Documentation
And what didn't Chrome forked from WebKit at some point with khtml from KDE. So yeah use WebKit more to avoid Chromium monopoly.
factormeta··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
>when a multinational corporation is looking at the prospect of possibly losing billions of dollars in zero-effort recurring profit. I also think these sort of behaviors are damaging their brand, which is certainly Apple's most valuable asset - which is to say that I think they're acting in an irrational way, because of the amount of money at stake.

Being a Mac user since the 90's, it is unfortunate what Apple has become. However, this is often happens when a charismatic leader leaves the company (in one way or another). From what is seen in the the process of how so many startup at YC went from little company to transnational corporation, and what people's reaction to them have changed over the course of the year as well as the influence of funding and corporate culture has on a company are also very telling.

Now days I'm sticking to linx BSD F-Droid for personal stuff even though they are not as user friendly in the UI aspect.

>As a culture, we've been brainwashed not to fund trains.

The billionaires are surely investing heavily on trains and farms.

factormeta··on Show HN: EXT – an easy way to build cross-platform desktop software
so it's like capcitor.js/cordova but for desktop. Still fail to see the advantage over Electron, NWJS or tauri.
factormeta··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
another reason to stop using SPA and use island base or NO JS web page for informational stuff like forum and discussion. At least displaying of information on the web should NOT depend on JS.
factormeta··on YouTransfer: Self-hosted file transfer and sharing solution
Just FYI, Quiet also allows unlimited file transfer size: https://tryquiet.org/

Not saying it is most efficient, but for non tech friends, that may be an option.

factormeta··on NetSurf Web Browser
thanks for mention it. For people who don't like using js heavy site, this is a very good way to just browse lite document base (not SPA) web site. No Brave or Ad blocker needed. And it is one of few browser will display google in html old format.
factormeta··on Poor Man's Web
wouldn't it just be better to start a new html5 without JS trend? It can the defector standard for document based web! A lot of modern CSS options to build nav menus now days[1]:

Form submit etc to send network traffics are all available, JS is only needed when you wanna do something cute like network call (AJAX) or change dom elements without refreshing the page. And come up with kluge such as allowing js to change the route with in the domain.

factormeta··on A programming language coding in a grid
Likewise. In specific to: >In practice, when used as a data warehouse, SPL does show different performance compared with traditional solutions. For example, in an e-commerce funnel analysis scenario, SPL is nearly 20 times faster than Snowflake even if running on a server with lower configuration; in a computing scenario of NAOC on clustering celestial bodies, the speed of SPL running on a single server is 2000 times faster than that of a cluster composed of a certain top distributed database. There are many similar scenarios, basically, SPL can speed up several times to dozens of times, showing very outstanding performance.

Wow that really sounds amazing? Just wonder how a java based db can out perform Snowflake (a columnar base db). Maybe the original implementation in Snowflake is not optimal? Then again, from personal experience h2 embedded mode significantly faster than plain postgres.

factormeta··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
And Telegram align with Russians. Don't use these Faangish platform period for personal communications. Once there is a user based they will be bought by huge geopolitical influences.

Use Matrix, Masterdon, email, phone for communication and only see these platform as publishing platforms to target these specific geopolitical camps.

factormeta··on Google agrees to pay $700M in antitrust settlement reached with states
>Android users can protect themselves by only installing applications from secure app stores like Google Play and installing a mobile anti-virus product on their device.

F-Droid is a much better option for consumers. If I download an app that runs on my hardware and uses my mobile data, then it would be dame good idea that NOT ONLY the source is available, but there is build-able from the available source.

factormeta··on Stripe live dashboard
Doesn't work on brave by default, also doesn't work with shield turned off. When turn on the dev console, then it works. Hmmm, a bit sketch doesn't work when it require js from another domain.
factormeta··on Army ants use collective intelligence to build bridges
>I'm also trying to program a digital ant farm: https://ant.care/ Totally off topic, but your domain reminded me of: https://antville.org JS on the server-side (On JVM since the late 90's)
factormeta··on VMware is now part of Broadcom
>They will continue to raise maintenance and licensing fees until they very last customer turns off their last ESXi box

hmm, why would people still use VMWare? Honest question. Maybe there are some licensing issues I'm not aware of. Isn't vbox open source? If not, wouldn't even things such as https://copy.sh/v86/ in the browser would do most virtualization trick now days?

factormeta··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
IMHO RCS should have not being adopted unless it has encryption built in, or else it is just Google's iMessenger.

At this point, anything messaging platform or financial transaction platform that doesn't implement post-quantum encryption + classic computer encryption ECC (such as superdilithium) should NOT be consider as a standard for messaging for the public. All that ought to be part of the messaging protocol, so we don't end up with GSM 64 bit encryption mess.

factormeta··on WASM by example
very nice! Can this be done with Java and/or Rust? Or does it only work with C ATM?
factormeta··on Migrating our backend from Vercel to Fly.io
Hmm if they hole point is save memory and smaller sizes, and since they are willing go with Bun (very experimental type of tech), then they should also just tried Deno.
factormeta··on Google’s dominance under siege: Antitrust trial threatens sweeping changes
Antitrust trials in US are just for show and limited hang out for the public. No antitrust trials has ever resulted in truly resulted in more competition for the smaller players. Breaking up of Standard Oil, just made the owners more money. Look at what happen to the MS antitrust trial.

In fact everything has just consolidated over last few decades. Now we ended up with handful of people owning everything and rigging markets all over the place.

What we need to focus on is how to create decentralized open source free(libre) software, networks, hardware and platform alternatives for what FANNGs are offering.

factormeta··on Omnigres: Postgres as a Platform
>- about scaling: you have to get very far before saturating a single postgres server. A lot of applications certainly do get to that point, but most don't. And once you get there, scaling postgres is definitely more work than scaling a stateless service, but it also gives you a lot more in terms of performance, reliability and further scalability.

Thank you for saying this. Mostly when postgres as a platform is brought up, the horizontally scaling ppl will often mention the parent thread. I have being developing since Apple computer had floppy disk, and there is rarely many situations where I need to saturating a single postgres server.

And even if one did get to the situation where that happens, with introduction of hydra, or other postgers columnar db, we can just put that in. Most user will never get to a point where they need to saturating a single postgres server. And also keep in mind when processing large row data, writting stuff in middleware is just not as efficent or fast as in postgres when it has native access to data and data manipulation.

factormeta··on CISA, NSA, FBI Release Advisory Warning of BlackTech, PRC-Linked Cyber Activity
yeah post Snowden there are quite bit of big mistrust in NSA type of gov agency. However, what people ought to focus a bit more on are the tel-co companies (AT&T type of companies). They get all your data, call and location via cellular towel triangulation even with internet turned off. As long as you are using a mobile phone they have a lot personal data about you. and they are NOT subject to public scrutiny as NSA type of gov agency. As bad as government agency they are such as NSA, they are still (or need to make an appearance of) being scrutinized by the public. Yeah and as some said there are red/blue teams in the public agency as well, some are still good public servants.

Hmm don't see it yet on the FAQ yet.
factormeta··on Your computer should say what you tell it to say
WEI sounds like another security theater play by Ad corp. When web first come out it is because it's sandbox that made it so attractive. The server doesn't need to know what client it is, as long as it is speaking http.

With intro of html5, (webgpu, webgl, web audio api), that sandbox has being slowly opened up.

factormeta··on Blocked by Cloudflare
seems like the author mentioned that in FireFox disabling "privacy.resistFingerprinting" worked. So looks like Chrome by default is allowing the server to collect Fingerprinting. If cloud flare is using that, then it is a big red flag.
factormeta··on Microsoft decides it will be the one to choose which secure login method you use
hmm, Authenticator is open source (https://github.com/mattrubin/Authenticator). 2FA is also available in open source key manager program such as KeePass.

When it comes to 2FA, I would rather trust open source apps vs the ones made by Google/MS.

factormeta··on Google will soon let Pixel phones double as dashcams
>but having the government require people to collect evidence against themselves is a hard no from me.

Not an expert on US constitution, but Isn't that a violation?

factormeta··on I stopped worrying and learned to love denormalized tables
One of main reason to normalize data is aim to eliminate duplication, and find "the source data" by properly designing the relationships of tables.
