factormeta··on The secret life of DNS packets (2019)
Yeah but then they not going to have a fancy blog about how they hit the AWS traffic limit to VPC resolver! Now days a tech blog like this is gonna be good tech PR for the company.
factormeta··on Taming LLMs – A Practical Guide to LLM Pitfalls with Open Source Software
From a developer with extensive database ETL experience, is it still necceary to learn or use LangChain? Would it be just easier to load directly to vector db?
factormeta··on TIL: Some surprising code execution sources in bash
Oh no!!! But what about all those Docker files, and k8 clusters!!!

Serious, please view the curled file from a link before piping it to bash/sh.

factormeta··on Interactive Visual Sorting
The visual of Radix LSD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Significant_figures#Least_sign... ) was quite interesting!
factormeta··on Show HN: Video editor app that generates FFmpeg commands
Wow!! This is like the pgadmin4 of postgres!!!

It is much much needed to make ffmepg on par with a video editor!

factormeta··on Pidgin 3.0.0 Experimental 1 Announcement
Would be good for Matrix to have more stable client than Element or Flutter based apps.
factormeta··on Undergraduates with family income below $200k will be tuition-free at MIT
>The same way the wealthy will pay themselves a tiny salary and just live off the asset value of their stock.

When you say them living off the asset value of their stock, you mean the dividends from the stock?

factormeta··on Matrix Client Tutorial
Would really really be nice to have the -user management -> registering -> device management

A hello world example for v3 that will be great. To understand how to actually register a new account on the matrix server with Registration Token enabled server.

factormeta··on Matrix Client Tutorial
just wonder what is wrong with the default rocksdb setup that came with Conduit? Wouldn't that be better for concurrencies?
factormeta··on Rats learned to drive
Who needs rat-driving cars, when you have Snakes on a Plane:

factormeta··on A comparison of Rust’s borrow checker to the one in C#
Have you tried VSC for C# (yes asp core). The debugging is just broken. I would not recommend any sane person using VSC for C# related large project development.
factormeta··on A comparison of Rust’s borrow checker to the one in C#
>The experience with Visual Studio is stellar.

I assume you mean just the Windows Visual Studio? The Mac version is not exactly on par with the Windows. Yeah C# is great, but one would need Window's version of VS (NOT VS Code) to take full advantage of C#. For me that is a deal breaker, when the DX of a language is tight to a proprietary sourced IDE by MS.

factormeta··on In the US, regenerative farming practices require unlearning past advice
For sure, economic assessment is one way to figure out what to do.

When we as a civilization making decisions ending up where we are now (depleted soil and what else not looming). It does make one wonder if the current financial incentives is NOT aligned with the incentives of living beings on the planet? How can we make it so?

Where and when did that misalignment happened?

factormeta··on Subvert – Collectively owned music marketplace
Ah never mind, read through the site a bit more. They are aiming to be the Mondragon [1] of music. The co-op modal seems interesting, so is socially beneficial corp. In the end of day it is all about implementation. It is nice that there are lawyers and economists involved, but are the founders sound artists? have they toured? run a music venue? Asking for the founding fee of $100 seems quite a bit much, but then again does seems a bit like the vibe coming from LA area who is out of touch with the rest of the world.

factormeta··on In the US, regenerative farming practices require unlearning past advice
>The other factor, he said, was that you'll suffer lower yields for a few years after you stop tilling, while the soil builds up a proper layer of decomposing matter on top. Or at least, farmers are afraid that could happen. And it's not a risk worth taking in their view.

Maybe it has more the fact that humans are risk averse. We just don't want to make financial sacrificed in the short term to get longer term rewards. Many of us want to do good, but we also don't want our 401ks and subsidies to go down.

factormeta··on The PlanetScale vectors public beta
Can it be put into MarianDB? Or has the two project diverged so much that is not possible now?

To be honest using MySQL the fact that it is owned by a corp is quite a concern ATM.

factormeta··on Show HN: Rust Web Framework
What about Actix? There were some discussion on HN a while back related to Actix vs Axum if I recall that.
factormeta··on AWS and Azure Are at Least 4x–10x More Expensive Than Hetzner
>Take the recent Lichess downtime, for example. Their main server had a hardware issue that required physical intervention. This meant the site was down for over 10 hours, and there wasn't much they could do except wait for OVH to send a tech.

If you not a HN person with systemadmin skills yes. But is NOT that hard to have in house RADI hd setup, with failover server. Or failover NAT gateway. AWS and cloud provider are just a rip off.

factormeta··on MVCC – the part of PostgreSQL we hate the most (2023)
what about https://github.com/orioledb/orioledb ?
factormeta··on Subvert – The Collectively Owned Music Marketplace
would this be like open-collective for musicians?
factormeta··on I Am Tired of AI
>In the past, you had to put a lot of effort to produce a text which seemed to be high quality, especially when you knew nothing about the subject. By the look of text and the usage of the words, you could tell how professional the writer was and you had some confidence that the writer knew something about the subject. Now, that is completely removed. There is no easy filter anymore.

That is pretty much true also for other media, such as audio and video. Before digital stuff become mainstream pics are developed in the darkroom, and film are actually cut with scissors. A lot of effort are put into producing the final product. AI has really commoditized for many brain related tasks. We must realize the fragile nature of digital tech and still learn how to do these by ourselves.

factormeta··on Lazarus Group laundered $200M from 25 crypto hacks to fiat
just edit /etc/hosts or run your own bind, and point dns to 127.0.0.1, no DNS root server needed!
factormeta··on Intents: The Endgame for Computing Interfaces?
>The gradual shift from imperative to declarative interfaces

prolog, sql, chatgpt comes to mind

factormeta··on Zero-Click Calendar invite vulnerability chain in macOS
seems this just encourage researchers to sell zero-day exploits to organize crime and/or alphabet letter agencies. No wonder we have no digital security at all! Big tech don't really care about security or privacy. Why are we even using their stuff?
factormeta··on Zero-Click Calendar invite vulnerability chain in macOS
practice of the art of the corporate grift does take a toll on one's soul. Usually only pyscho/sociapath can do master this and do it for a long time without any emotional/mental consequences.
factormeta··on Chrome is entrenching third-party cookies that will mislead users
>It would be great if browsers made fingerprinting more difficult, i.e.: not allowed to read canvas data, not allowed to read GPU name, enumerate audio cards, probe for installed extensions etc. Every new web API should guarantee that it doesn't provide more fingerprinting data or hides the data behind a permission.

This should be what browser maker's #1 focus! Preventing fingerprinting of user's browser.

Seems all this cookies talk the news and for policy makers are just limited hangouts.

factormeta··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
wouldn't that just be some kind of NLP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_language_processing?

May just be a long list of if/else and/or switch statements or isomorphism.

factormeta··on Devs need system design tools, not diagramming tools
Isn't that what WASAM suppose to be?
factormeta··on Creating a Safari webarchive from the command line
Thanks all the JS - SPA develops that insisting on putting JS all over the place. Wouldn't it be better to have everything in one .html, using <script> <style> just inline. Then it is also just one file over the internet. There must be a bundler that does that no?

Seems JS developer just want their code to the obfuscated and unachievable as possible unless it is via their web server.
