These things existed? I never heart of them. I thought it was 14", 15", 17", and 21".

> VBR should also work no problem on this IBM

I think this statement is incorrect. These modes requires support for VESA 2.0 which this IBM does not have.

> Somewhat problematic as it required less than 16MB ram or "15-16MB memory hole" enabled in bios.

Could be the issue. Do you have any documentation about this?

DX2-66 vs DX-50. A DX2-50 obviously lose to a DX-50.

Show me a photo of that beauty.

+1 on Andrew Kensler's awesomeness. After I published these article, he took the time to send me a package with Pixar goodies. Deeply moving gesture.

Can you elaborate why? I understand the bus speed difference but the benchmark I remember always gave the 66Mhz winning over the 50Mhz.

> how hard is it to port from OpenWatcom to GCC?

I don't think it is that hard but likely very time consuming.

In theory it should only be about writing a new build script (not based on `wmake` but on a real `make`). And then workout the tiny flag/preprocessor/C compiler discrepancies.

Exactly. I got scammed on my first PC when they sold me a 486 for the price of a 386. It was too good to be true. I later learned that the 486 was an SLC. Per say, a 386 with some internal cache from Cyrix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrix_Cx486SLC).

Visual Studio? The first released Visual Studio (Boston) was released in 1997. Doom was developed during 1993 :P !

Triple buffering mean you can render at any speed, there will always be a valid target where to render and you never need to wait or vsync.

This is not the case with double buffering. There can be a case, if the CPU renders fast enough, where it just finished rendering to the current target, but the previous target is still being sent to the CRT. In that case the CPU need to block on VBL.

What tools did you have in 1993? From what I understood, id Software used NeXT because the tooling was not up to the task.
fabiensanglard··on Why fastDOOM is fast
Indeed.

You can play on vintage hardware with a decent refresh rate. It makes it more enjoyable.

Thank you for taking the time to report it. It has now been fixed.

You mean like Ollama + llamacpp ?

fabiensanglard··on We were wrong about GPUs
Absolutely! I have been playing with Ollama on a Macbook Pro 192 GiB RAM and it is able to run most models whereas my 3090 runs our of RAM.

Lode's website is how I learned how raytracing worked back in the days.

Their website is pure gold. Also, I love the layout even more today.

fabiensanglard··on Tweaking Stunt Island's 30-year-old 3D engine
My understanding is that the double buffering was done in RAM (instead of VRAM). He did it by keeping the two last frames in EMS/XMS, calculating the delta, and copying only the parts that had changed from RAM to VRAM during VBLANK.

This is awesome. Mickey's Revenge looks so much better with LOD at 800%!

This game is a gem, it deserves a spot in the video-game hall of fame.

fabiensanglard··on Quake 3 Source Code Review: Network Model (2012)
Agreed. I wrote this a long time ago without anybody to help proofreading.

Sometimes I want to take it down out of shame but at the same time it is a good reminder of where I am coming from and a motivation to keep on improving.

Although, to be fair, now I speak good.

fabiensanglard··on A Brief History of Cyrix
My first PC was a 486SLC. It ran games such as Strike Commander and Doom extremely poorly. But that was the only 486 we could afford.

A few months after the purchase we figured out we got scammed. That was not a 486. That was a 386 with 1KiB cache.

I never managed to forgive Cyrix after that.

How does a program work when its disallow "backward branches". Same thing with "subroutine calls" how do you structure a program without them?

What does it mean "mapped". Does it mean we know what each nerve/axon does?
fabiensanglard··on How the SNES Graphics System Works
The only difference to handle PAL and NTSC is the master clock. The two consoles shipped with two different oscillator. I actually detailed how this works in last month article[1].

And as other have pointed out, Japan and USA both use NTSC.
