fab1an··on Golden raises $14.5M Series A led by a16z and Marc Andreessen joins board
Really great to see some actual non incremental innovation happening in the search space.

When looking at Golden's value prop, it becomes clear that Google has actually been somewhat, ehm, lazy when it comes to making search better, relying almost 100% on UGC to provide answers instead of trying to structure them in a concise way.

Very curious to see where this leads!

fab1an··on X-COM
Amazing work on the HD soundtrack! Takes me right back..
fab1an··on Del.icio.us
Hell yes. A few days ago I word by word googled "Delicious bookmarking alternative 2020" and was dismayed to find that there does not seem to exist anything as lightweight today. Can't wait to use delicious again.
fab1an··on Germany’s top financial supervisor dismissed a decade of warnings about Wirecard
The denial here was pretty strong, as Wirecard was one of the few success stories of a German technology company rising into the DAX that _wasn't_ founded over 80 years ago. Sadly, this may only fuel skepticism towards tech further instead of causing the possibly necessary reforms.
fab1an··on Smokers quit in record numbers amid Covid fears
Alas, the data pretty clearly shows that smoking has a surprisingly large protective effect against infection with Sars-CoV-2 - on the order of how well the flu vaccine protects against the flu! This understandably has not been widely reported (it is a nightmare result for public health officials), but there are now dozens of studies showing the same effect and virtually every investigated country.

On the other hand, it appears that former smokers are at a slightly higher risk of developing severe symptoms (though that seems less clear than the protective effect of active daily smoking)

This means that if you are a somewhat older smoker (i. e. over 30 or so) you should probably hold off the quitting until a vaccine becomes available.

fab1an··on Smokers quit in record numbers amid Covid fears
Most of these studies correct for age because of that.
fab1an··on Virtual Wind Instruments (2018)
I can recommend checking out the Linnstrument MPE controller for this, too, especially when coupled with VSTs by Audio Modeling (e. g. SWAM Saxophones mentioned by user troydavis.
fab1an··on Sampler for Mac Touchbars
How do you remove it? I have it always disabled but still run into the parent's problem that I'll randomly touch the stupid Siri button...
fab1an··on Zettlr – FOSS markdown editor for personal knowledge management and publishing
Interesting to see this kinds of tools get so much attention in the past couple of months!

I have seen a lot of buzz around Roam (which is interesting given how outright terrible the initial user experience and conversion funnel is - I did not have the patience and unsub'd immediately..)

I ended up buying https://zettelkasten.de/the-archive/ Super straightforward Zettelkasten system, and most importantly utilizing plain txt and not some weird proprietary format.

fab1an··on Deep Chernoff Faces
Came here to say this! That creepy cool chernoff face utilizing vampire captain. So cool.
fab1an··on Werner Herzog: ‘Film-making is always some sort of risk-taking’
Thank you for posting this - one of the most simultenously amusing/depressing things I have ever seen!
fab1an··on Variolation
Amusingly, this is one of the few cases where - extremely broadly - one general idea of homeopathy works: you're basically just microdosing virus. This is amusing because a lot of anti-vaxxers (at least in Germany) will also be into homeopathy. There's possibly a good pro-vax-comms strategy in here: reframe vaccines as homeopathic viral microdoses (instead of complicated pharmaceutical compounds) and you might save a few kids.
fab1an··on What are your bets on the future?
Thanks!

And yes, personal agency - I hadn't thought about it this way, but that's very apt.

fab1an··on Deep Learning for Guitar Effect Emulation
what's your link?
fab1an··on What are your bets on the future?
In the context of Covid19, I just wrote a blog post outlining 3 megatrends I'm seeing emerging:

- shutdown-cozy - hygienic-possessive - locally-remote

Bit too hi-res for a comment, so here's the post if you're interested:

fab1an··on Deep Learning for Guitar Effect Emulation
Quite a few small developers in this space. It's not like indie gaming, but there's also less competition. I think you need to be a musician/producer to be successful here though.
fab1an··on Deep Learning for Guitar Effect Emulation
Pretty cool, though I wonder what the latency of this would be if used as a plugin?

The author says it works in real-time, but to non music/audio folks this could mean '100 ms latency is real-time enough, right?'

Generally, I think the audio VST business is a really fun space to be in for a lifestyle business, as it is way too small to be attractive for VCs. It seems like a space that provides many niches for lots of small players to thrive in.

As an aside, it's really quite interesting that a lot of cutting edge tech is now used to emulate the hardware-based tech of yesteryear. Think film filters for photoshop, and about 90% of all audio plugins that emulate high end hardware, compressors, pedals, etc etc.

fab1an··on If someone asks if you have any questions, ask a question
This of course depends on the context, and the 'lunch' question won't always work. For example, if you feel that your interviewer lacks any sense of humour, or is the type of person who would judge a lot questions as 'stoopid', it may be better to skip it (and for that matter, maybe also skip that job)
fab1an··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Same issues here with a basically maxed-out MacBook Pro 15" 2018. Worst laptop I've ever owned.

Sadly I feel pretty invested in Mac OS as an operating system.

fab1an··on 74% of Startups Have Trimmed Staff, 65% Have Less Than 6 Months of Cash
I'd guess that most startups have less than 6 months of cash regardless of a pandemic happening or not.

Of course, blaming the pandemic for layoffs is an opportune thing to do.

For most (actual) startups (Lyft is not a startup) this should be an excellent time to execute or to pivot, but most certainly to thrive.

fab1an··on Jukebox
I kind of like the lo-fi vibe of these, as if it was run 100 x through an ancient sampler.
fab1an··on Seinfeld Adventure
This has to be some of the best pixel art ever created. Astonishingly good work!

BUT: I've spend a few minutes on the site and it is totally unclear how I can support the team / get the game / sign up for anything.

In fact, there doesn't seem to be anything other than an email?

fab1an··on A nicotinic hypothesis for Covid-19 with preventive and therapeutic implications
Anyone following the early data from China noticed this trend of PROFOUND underrepresentation of smokers w COVID19.

Lots of theories why, but my latest (total ignoramus speculation) is that smokers are more likely to have been exposed to the common endemic coronaviruses, which seem to result in T-cells that are able to fight Sars2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H07ukT8WkfY&feature=youtu.be

fab1an··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
I'd be good money to get a thicker Macbook Pro with a workable keyboard, that's for sure!
fab1an··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
It's incredibly annoying that you can't use your APPLE iPhone camera as a webcam for your APPLE Macbook, but instead are forced to use the atrociously terrible cam that comes with the Macbook.

I've tried workarounds using the excellent OSB, but there's currently no software that let's you reroute video on a Mac (like Loopback does for audio)

EDIT: I stand corrected, as user wolfhumble points out below, EpocCam seems to do this - thanks! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/epoccam-webcamera-for-computer...

fab1an··on Loss of sense of smell a marker for Covid-19 infection
The researcher who first described this symptom said that some mothers said they couldn't smell the full diapers of their kids, so: yes https://www.faz.net/aktuell/gesellschaft/gesundheit/coronavi...
fab1an··on Loss of sense of smell a marker for Covid-19 infection
The German researchers who first described these symptoms grouped loss of smell together with loss of taste. They saw this in 2/3 of their cases.
fab1an··on Bayer donates 3M chloroquine phosphate tablets for potential Covid-19 treatment
A word of warning to all who consider stocking up on and self-medicating with Chloroquine: while this is a well-studied medicine, it can have severe side effects, particularly in the eyes (including blindness). That said, let's hope it has some effect as current anecdata suggests.
fab1an··on Harvard epidemiologist: my colleagues assumed UK coronavirus plan “was satire”
You've ignored a couple crucial aspects though:

1. while I'm also skeptical re vaccines, we might well have more effective medical treatment options in a few weeks or months. There are a whole range of different phase 3 trials happeninig right now, some of which have shown anecdotal promise, esp Remisdivir.

2. We learn something new about this disease on a daily basis, meaning that in a few weeks we have diff picture of who exactly is most vulnerable (e. g. folks on ACEinhibitors, or we find ACEi actually are protective and ARBs are an issue etc etc

fab1an··on Italy and South Korea virus outbreaks reveal disparity in deaths and tactics
Sorry, but this is bogus.

EDIT: I do not mean to imply that Italy failed in any respect. Italy has one of the best HC systems in the world.

The only reason this testing aspect worked out well for Germany is a very localized testing system. This type of 'federalism' is now a big issue though, as the gov can't simply ban events - only the states and communes can.
