escoz··on Bird Acquires Scoot
Thanks, I had no idea of this.
escoz··on Bird Acquires Scoot
I guess this explains the Bird scooters parked around SF downtown over the last few days.. :)
escoz··on Uber ordered to stop self-driving vehicle service in San Francisco
Funny , because they say "self driving" on their own website:

escoz··on Uber ordered to stop self-driving vehicle service in San Francisco
CA law says every autonomous car in testing needs to have an operator in charge, so technically all incidents are due to human error.

Also: Uber is not listed in the CA DMV list of companies allowed to test autonomous vehicles? https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/autonomous/testi...

escoz··on Google’s Self-Driving Car Project Is Losing Out to Rivals
I love F1, but driving on a closed track (or highways, for what matters) is many orders of magnitude easier than dealing with traffic, people, bikes, other drivers, etc. BMW created this many years ago, and the car was better than most drivers already. Advancing track days doesn't really help much on bringing cars to cities.

escoz··on Was There a Problem with the Rio Pool?
fyi the pool was built by an american company.
escoz··on Machine Learning and Ketosis
If anybody is reading this and curious about Ketosis, I'd recommend Taubes book (https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Get-Fat-About/dp/0307474259). It's a great review of scientific studies done over the years.

I read that 4 years ago, spent another 4 months reading the listed studies, convinced myself it was a good plan, and lost 40 pounds with no exercises. I still do LCHF after all these years, and likely will never go back to a traditional diet, it feels great.

escoz··on AlphaGo beats the world champion Lee Sedol in first of five matches
Yes, go have a finite number of board states, just 2.08168199382×10^170, just a bit over the 10^80 atoms in the universe.

escoz··on Intermittent Fasting Is Gaining Acceptance
I've been eating LCHF for almost 4 years now, I started doing it to lose weight, but I feel so much better when on diet that is hard to stop. When I'm firm on the diet, I can easily go a full day without any food, and not feel any hunger or mood swings. It's great.

You can always just continue to use the same version of the library you always used.

escoz··on iOS 7 before and after screenshots
I finished updating my app to iOS7 and I think it looks way better than most items in that page: http://pic.twitter.com/QSruUkzMzr
escoz··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
Agree. Knowing that users of old devices will continue to be able to use your app makes me a lot more excited about releasing for iOS7 only.
escoz··on iOS 7 before and after screenshots
Themes don't work; Windows Phone has two choices and a lot of developers simply support only of them.
escoz··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
Apple could have told developers about this during WWDC, but didn't.

My guess is Apple decided to do this last minute, after they saw the number of iOS7-only apps that developers were submitting.

escoz··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
If there was a bug in the old version that is not compatible with the latest, there was no way to fix it anyway. This change doesn't solve that issue, but it solves 99% of the cases I deal with, which is old users complaining they can't get the app they bought after a release drops an old iOS version.
escoz··on What Will the Federal Government do with Hyperloop?
Nice of you to recognize the thing is not targeted at absolutely everybody, like absolutely every other method of transportation. People here seem to be forgetting that.
escoz··on What Will the Federal Government do with Hyperloop?
Same thing can technically be said about a HSR or a plane. You can't stop the train/plane because somebody got sick, and although you have a bathroom, and although the extra space helps, the resources you have inside the car/plane are very scarce anyway. Yet, very few people die inside those things nowadays.
escoz··on Hyperloop
He makes the point that he doesn't need to block 100 feet from each side of the track, as well as put barriers in place to prevent animal crossing and blocking farmers from getting to the other side of the farm, in the same way power lines today use space. That means he would need some non-farmable area around the track, yes, but that it wouldn't disrupt the farm like a normal HSR track would.
escoz··on Hyperloop
lots and lots of hills and farms between SP/RJ , while in California most of the highway already in place is mostly a straight flat line.
escoz··on Hyperloop
Not only that, but they would also use a lot of technology that Tesla/SpaceX now has a lot of experience in: battery, eletric engines and turbines, the metal for the ski pads, etc. There's a reason why he is making the plan completely free: he has a lot to benefit if this ever really happens.

I would love to see this happen though, and to see Elon become a trillionaire.

escoz··on Hyperloop
He does mention luggage would be 1) handled by hyperloop employees 2) removed from the pod all at once to be handled at a different time. Probably more like these pods, which are mostly "blast resistant" http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6918501.html
escoz··on Hyperloop Alpha [pdf]
Elon mentions in the paper that even on planes today landing procedures take over 30 mins, and during that time people can't get out of their seats, and everybody is ok with it. For longer routes you would definitely need more space, but then he also describes the model that would allow for carrying cars, which is a lot more space.
escoz··on Hyperloop Alpha [pdf]
did you read the paper?
escoz··on Stop Allowing App Reviews From Beta iOS Versions
Developers (and I think everybody) can ask reviews to be removed, and in general I had that done a few times. But, yes, no accountability.
escoz··on Stop Allowing App Reviews From Beta iOS Versions
If iOS7 serves as an example, this would be a terrible idea. Betas 1/2 were nowhere near acceptable for day-to-day usage, and while the new betas are better, I still get app crashes and even phone restarts every once in a while. Letting everybody use the beta from the very beginning would be the far worse thing they could do: all of a sudden, with no notice, every developer out there would be forced to fix crashes asap to avoid millions of people complaining about it. And it would pretty quickly cause people to hate apple's phones, because they "crash all the time."
escoz··on Stop Allowing App Reviews From Beta iOS Versions
IMHO Apple should allow these reviews to go thru, and then simply hide/delete them on the server side. They're testing iOS as well, and I would bet that they're tracking crashes and bugs on the AppStore app and review process.
escoz··on Stop Allowing App Reviews From Beta iOS Versions
IOS7 only resizes controls built with the new iOS7 SDK. Apps build with the iOS6 sdk continue to look and work just line normal, and my guess is a lot of the crashes people are seeing are regression bugs for Apple. The latest Beta 5 fixed a ton of crashes on some apps I've been using.
escoz··on CocoaDocs - Documentation for iOS Libraries
Awesome.. Now if only contributors helped with adding documentation to some of my classes..
escoz··on New 750+ open source icons (files on github)

He's accepting requests as well for new icons, so if you need anything just contact him!

escoz··on How I lost 30 lbs
Just go without any sugar. Seriously. It'll taste bad for the first few days, but after that you'll get used to the taste and it'll feel just as good. It's the same thing with coffee.
