erikaww··on Electric vehicle safety via crash test
Couldn’t this be engineered away? Put half the battery on top and another on the bottom
erikaww··on What I tell people new to on-call
I think you mean organizational issue not development skill issue. If shit is constantly hitting the fan, that is the orgs fault, not the engineers

I’d give multiple weeks of time for a city trash can lol
erikaww··on What commercial flight route needs the most (min poss.) stops from A to B?
In a decade there will be a light rail that is even faster than the shuttle! (Between Everett and SeaTac or the city)

erikaww··on Executions of the conceivably innocent are no better than human sacrifice
Sounds like we should fix the right problem then! If my loved ones don’t get justice, then I am taking shit into my own hands.

erikaww··on Federal civil rights watchdog sounds alarm over Feds use of facial recognition
You completely missed the nuance that peer countries have up to half an order higher deaths per capita.

This is an easily solved problem. More on the nuance: humans are imperfect when driving, so design infrastructure around that.

What are you gaining out of this? Like do you also look aside when gun violence is brought up?

erikaww··on Federal civil rights watchdog sounds alarm over Feds use of facial recognition
Kind of. Call it what it is. It’s extremely pervasive and has a massive impact on the culture, quality of life and economics in the US.

It is a shame because it would be a fixed problem if we held people accountable or fixed land use or designed infrastructure to be safer

erikaww··on Federal civil rights watchdog sounds alarm over Feds use of facial recognition
Hmm yeah plane failures are totally as pervasive as traffic violence

Calling it propaganda is also crazy. Like you want people to keep dying this way? Great way to show your true colors pal

erikaww··on Federal civil rights watchdog sounds alarm over Feds use of facial recognition
You’ve never been in accident or almost hit by a car? You don’t know anyone that has died that way? Really?

Infinitesimal? It’s one of the leading causes of death among youth on the order of suicide, homicide and drug overdoses. Calling it infinitesimally small is horribly offensive.

It’s a big reason why our life expectancy is lower than peer countries. Again to reiterate, we spend a ton of our GDP just in healthcare to address traffic violence. Modern fire departments mostly address car accidents rather than fires.

You clearly don’t know what you are talking about and you are going to hit a sore spot in many Americans

erikaww··on Federal civil rights watchdog sounds alarm over Feds use of facial recognition
I think it would be a fantastic idea for the government to surveil road infrastructure. We spend a crap ton of our GDP just on healthcare addressing the negative impact of traffic violence. Not to mention everyone knows someone that has been killed or affected by this. Outright saying the government shouldn’t monitor this is in bad taste.

You can argue that the solution is to stop doubling down on our bad investment, bad that is much less feasible than installing a bunch of traffic cameras.

Meta: I welcome the dog pile that will ensue.

erikaww··on Don't defer Close() on writable files (2017)
Funny thing is that there is a near footgun with this go: if you defer and set a non named return in a defer, like cErr, that won’t actually set that variable. Not sure what actually happens in that case but godbolt would tell you. In that case, the error would get swallowed

erikaww··on Harvester pulls 1.5 gallons of drinking water from arid air per day
On hot days, I’ll drink nearly two gallons. Most days 1.5 gallons. Just water. I have a very large cup that is a pint and a cup. I’ll drink 8-10 of those a day. Though I eat a lot of salty/dry foods. America baby. If I go for a long bike ride I’ll be able to wring my shirt/sweatshirt and sweat will come pouring out.

After a long ride I’ll drink nearly half a gallon of water. Likely excessive but it tastes really good.

It’s likely there is a very large variation in the water people need to consume. During college, I knew individuals that would drink merely a glass or two all day (minus before/after going to the library). Very small water bottles. Though these individuals looked to be <100 lbs.

erikaww··on Self-healing 'living skin' can make robots more humanlike
The answer to that is not banning apartments through the vast majorities of our cities, forcing everything to be spread out so that you have to drive a car to participate in society. If the elderly could just walk to where they needed to go or walk around for leisure, they would not age as fast.

I shouldn’t have an old lady approach me to help her across a 2 lane + left turn road in Ann Arbor MI because she is afraid she will get hit again.

Human looking robots would be such a dystopian and sad solution to elderly loneliness. They need a third place and access to such in old age.

Pretty sure they can glean some info just by looking at dns requests. Maybe could infer who is who by MAC address. Though, I think you need to act like a router. I think could just listen to all of this on public Wi-Fi though
erikaww··on Traffic noise hurts children's brains
There sounds like a simple fix: have the city run the full stack (including towing). Ideally most cars flowing in would be from automated enforcement.

Regulation will only work with strong enforcement. By taking such aggressive actions, we can also elicit information on shops doing illegal work and have the police shut their businesses down.

erikaww··on Traffic noise hurts children's brains
Why the crusher? Just repo it or take all the expensive parts out. Then give that money to schools or use it to fund putting out cameras to automate traffic enforcement

Dogs barking cannot be worse than cars, especially compensators with the pop pop pop engines or tires screeching. Live right by a doggy daycare and several busy arterials
