I suspect in reality, human bodies may become more machine-like and more biologically engineered rather than just the focus on restoring functionality and health.

Nice someone exploring this, but seems like priority should be on eyes/lips movement. The leap Valve made to make avatars more believable by improving those domains is much larger than SSS and other efforts to increase skin realism a decade later.

I mean, to me the entire issue is of mental health, and would ideally be addressed that way, but assuming all else is equal any alternative to a kid being harmed should be preferable no matter how otherwise messed up the thing is in and of itself.
