In 1875, the American Express Company established the first private pension plan in the United States.

I can also see a situation where the SSA recipient in 1940 was born in 1875. The recipient age 65 could have married someone very young for 10 years. That younger person could be on survivors benefits and continue receiving payments.

Here is an example: https://www.ssa.gov/history/idapayroll.html

On January 31, 1940, the first monthly retirement check was issued to Ida May Fuller of Ludlow, Vermont, in the amount of $22.54. Miss Fuller, a Legal Secretary, retired in November 1939. She started collecting benefits in January 1940 at age 65 and lived to be 100 years old, dying in 1975.

https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10084.pdf

https://www.ssa.gov/survivor/eligibility

So if in 1965 this retired person married someone age 18... Then that person at 18 never remarried. Could they end up in a situation where they receive survivors benefits from the original applicant?

The recent spouse would be born in 1947 and marry in 1965 for 10 years until their spouse's death... not have remarried or worked, then at age 60 in 2007, derive survivors benefits from original applicant?

oh yes the par value of stock...

https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/what-is-par-value-st...

I think he went the route of his IRA's investment llc membership units being assigned a super large assignment of income distribution vs his initial investment.

just guessing...

erik998··on Peter Thiel turned a Roth IRA into a $5B tax-free piggy bank
This worked because he used a self directed IRA that most likely invested in some LLC with a marginal amount. It's very probable he also invested in the same company via some other investment vehicle, possibly direct ownership. The managing members simply assigned more benefits to the self directed IRA instead of the other account...

What does not seem fair is that most people think you can only invest in stocks and bonds in an IRA. You go to a bank or brokerage to open an IRA account... They offer you mutual funds, etfs, stocks, bonds... not much else... No one ever tells you that you can do this a different way and invest in different ways... Why? It's just too complicated for most people...

https://trustprovident.com/self-directed-investing-in-a-limi...

Yes it does suck for the rest of us but if you have money you have good advisors that can construct this IRA and all of its transactions in a legitimate manner.

erik998··on Is education no longer the ‘great equalizer’?
""" No doubt some people will persist in questioning the usefulness of Latin. For these skeptics I have a two-word answer: Mark Zuckerberg. The 26-year-old founder of Facebook studied Classics at Phillips Exeter Academy and listed Latin as one of the languages he spoke on his Harvard application. So keen is he on the subject, he once quoted lines from the Aeneid during a Facebook product conference and now regards Latin as one of the keys to his success. Just how successful is he? According to Forbes magazine, he’s worth $6.9 billion. If that isn’t a useful skill, I don’t know what is. """

erik998··on Is education no longer the ‘great equalizer’?
I don't think it will be possible maybe some ELIZA type interaction in the future you could come up with a virtual Harkness Table:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harkness_table

The purpose of the small class size discussions and methods similar to Harkness is to teach children how to behave and interact in group discussion. You are taught mental poker with an authority figure and your cohort. I can see the value of this especially for children that will need to supervise their wealth once they become adults. It's a great way to prepare someone to supervise a family office.

I believe learning the short duration decision games and long duration meta game with professor and class inculcates people predisposed to lead and inspire/manipulate.

You need a physical setting to learn this on a daily basis over several years. Even if you are not good at it; if you recognize what is going on you won't waste time in dead end careers or partnerships with elites. That is very valuable...

It's kind of funny. When people ask me which college they should send their kid to, I always reply better to spend their money on one of these types of private high schools or boarding schools. One of these kids and a community college degree will still be better off than most... (most likely they will find a way to continue the credential game, so...)

Will the American oligarchy provide these opportunities to the general public? Never... it's costly and time consuming. They need people that submit to quarterly reviews, 0-5% raises, and tenuous year end bonuses.

Maybe we should have a FAFSA for high school...

erik998··on Is education no longer the ‘great equalizer’?
Actually, Mark Zuckerburg went to Phillips Exeter Academy.

"At Ardsley High School, Zuckerberg excelled in classes. After two years, he transferred to the private school Phillips Exeter Academy, where he won prizes in mathematics, astronomy, physics, and classical studies." [no coding classes, hmm?]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Exeter_Academy

The facebook idea came from the booklet tey give each class with a picture of the student's face and location.

https://readwrite.com/2009/05/10/mark_zuckerberg_inspiration...

Many other founders went to similar schools. I was not aware of this until I did policy debate and met these types of students. They do live in a bubble and have no idea how to relate to the rest.

In fact, a good thing to do is always check the high school of these "founders." Check their curriculum...

When I see trade school students doing billion dollar startups, I will believe education is no longer a great equalizer. At the same time, I believe if you want to participate in the American oligarchy or compete with them, you need to become familiar with where they get their training.

It's not always the case but most times if you delve into their background you will find this to be the case.

erik998··on Ask HN: Do software engineers have leverage?
Yes it's OK and I don't decry it because I benefit from it... But the typical FTE will go on thinking the best career path is E3...E6 and along the way get PIPed when no longer needed... They will build castles in the air... But the vendor route allows a different relationship with the firm...

What I mean is most FTE don't realize the other relationship is possible and at a certain compensation level preferable... It's the ignorance of our generation when most FTE don't realize instead of some equity vesting over 4 years they might have been better off with a cash balance defined benefit plan or pension plan with the maximum contribution.

We think we know best but fail to realize it could be better. We get caught up on the LC competition but fail to distinguish an optimal plan outside of the ones presented to us.

Would a union help? I think so... Would it take lots of explaining ... yes....

one day, some startups will realize it will be to their advantage to form some association to collectively bargain with a small union pool of software engineers. It will be to their benefit to compete for labor against the big FANG companies... erik998··on Ask HN: How to attract perm Snr Engs when the contract market is so lucrative?
The top 3-5% of software engineers do not work at startups. They work via their own S Corporation... Why? To copy the same way most doctors and high end professions get paid...

1. solo 401k - hit maximum contribution limit (57k-63.5k)

2. cash balance/defined benefit plan - your solo pension plan up to 3 million For year 2021, the maximum compensation is $290,000 to contribute to your defined benefit plan...

As governments grant corporations better preference in tax treatment, you really got to ask yourself why anyone would want to be a W-2 employee anymore... (w-2 employee of your solo S-corp is the exception)

Nothing stopping any company from giving you options as well...

Some extra rules and costs arise with defined benefit plans but well worth it.

SV wants capitalism and free markets but when forced to do so with workers the hesitation comes up... but but but you gotta come a play foozeball at work on the weekends... and we gotta share a beer and tell me about your dev friends..

erik998··on Kickstarter employees vote to unionize
I would not be surprised if there is some low level effort amongst some of the larger companies in silicon valley.... especially after the whole issue of not bidding up talent or stealing talent from each other...
erik998··on Kickstarter employees vote to unionize
Those were my initial feelings as well. I guess the issue comes down to focusing on software development as a skill and having that skill rewarded in manner you can count on. Our industry is really similar to actors. They have SAG and their guild negotiates with the MPAA. So every studio needs to belong to MPAA. Every year they negotiate the daily/weekly minimum rates for actors with SAG. They are pretty flexible with different rates for indy films vs big budget films. It's not so hard to imagine a software developers guild where they negotiate for a daily/weekly minimum for developers, dba's, qa's, devops, and such...

https://www.sagaftra.org/production-center/contract/810/rate....

If you are celebrity equivalent of a developer, then you can get paid more. There are no real restrictions. You don't see famous actors getting paid below the daily minimum. When they work for a big budget film they typically get x multiple times the daily rate. Also, if they want to work on an indy film they can agree to those minimum daily rates as well.

I think its flexible enough so if you want to work for a nonprofit you can just accept the daily/weekly minimum vs asking full price if you work for FAANG.

I don't think it's a crazy amount of protections but it sets aside a basic set of standards you can expect from job to job.

If your are making over 120k they suggest actors create a loan out corporation at that point...

https://firemark.com/2015/01/12/should-you-have-a-loan-out-c....

Can you imagine all the FAANG companies having to setup a Software Industry Association to negotiate with a Software Developers Guild every year? It seems plausible. It's probably in their best interest as well. These companies could just dump any social issues on to the union and just focus on making profits. The ability to lock out competitors might force other big software dev employers to join the association as well.

erik998··on Kickstarter employees vote to unionize

erik998··on Kickstarter employees vote to unionize
The model you are asking about is similar to SAG-AFTRA. This how actors work. This is the preferred model. Kickstarter employees should have used this as an opportunity to push for something like that.

The reason SAG started was because production companies made an agreement amongst themselves not to bid competitively for talent. (Remember that just ocurred in tech...)

erik998··on The Big Five in tech are paying like the Big Four in sports
And yet the athletes are still smarter than the geeks... They have a union...
erik998··on Major union launches campaign to organize video game and tech workers
I think something like SAG-AFTRA would be the perfect model. We already function as actors... We audition for coding roles... The recruiters are like managers... Most roles are for 1.5 years...

If the major FAANG companies had an association called the Software Development Industry... Programmers would join a Software Developers Guild... Annually the guild would negotiate with the Software Development Industry and create daily minimum rates, safe working conditions, and worker protections for software developers. (what kind of protections... I think assuring workers can operate and compete freely... No anti competitive behaviors such as refraining from soliciting one another’s employees in order to avert a salary war)

If FAANG doesn't do it, I would not be surprised other firms push for it as a way to compete for talent.

Imagine, instead of figuring out cap tables and trying to prevent getting screwed by dilution... imagine if that task was delegated to the Guild and they could hire people to negotiate for that and monitor that on an ongoing basis.

Imagine if those options could be captured in a defined benefit plan or packaged in some other way where professionals could be hired to manage the risks inherent with taking options from a startup.

I think too many people think about dockworkers and construction workers when unions are discussed. Please review the SAG agreements here:

https://www.sagaftra.org/files/20172020wagesTV.pdf

https://www.wrapbook.com/essential-guide-sag-rates/#SAG%20Te...

If you are a great programmer you might charge 8x the daily minimum. No one is forcing you to accept the minimum, but you should not have to accept anything below the minimum.

If you could delegate tasks to the guild to monitor the financial health of your employer, manage your stock option negotiation, and negotiate a daily minimum each year... you could offload a lot complicated issues and at least focus on your work... At a certain point a manager could assist with these tasks as well, especially if you are 8x the daily minimum.

The daily minimum is to make sure no one takes advantage of people (ie, young employees at startups)...

erik998··on Is College Still Worth It? The New Calculus of Falling Returns [pdf]
Funny, every time I hear these stories about the declining value of college I always think why that is. Is the premium declining because so many people can at least have a chance to finance an education now? Is that really bad?

Whenever I hear someone say they don't need to go to college, I remind them Mark Zuckerberg was at Philips Exeter (2019 tuition 49k), Bill Gates and Paul Allen at Lakeside School (2019 tuition 36k), Reid Hoffman attended Putney School (2019 tuition and boarding 56k). Many of the people that make pronouncements about college not being a necessity came from wealthy backgrounds or went to the upper crust of private high schools in America. In fact whenever someone makes these crazy suggestions I suggest you look up their background and it will usually be wealthy family/private high school.

I will grant Bezos and Thiel being the exception to private schools but still they came from upper middle class / wealth backgrounds...

These individuals could do without college. The hard work and preparation at their high schools put them through a grueling curriculum. If they have enough discipline to graduate from these high schools they would have been a success with or without college.

Unless you are in similar situation, please go to college and graduate. Specific degrees do not really matter just graduate so you don't get sidelined late in your career.

I still hear people say it is not necessary. It probably isn't really necessary for most IT roles but once youthful enthusiasm runs out, every employer will look to replace you. Do not think they will value your experience and loyalty.

Another counterpoint, if it was the case a college education is not necessary to succeed at Silicon Valley, why do these firms have a difficult time hiring black or hispanic employees... Sure college may be useless for some but please don't peddle this garbage in the face of reality.

So either the Silicon Valley firms are racist and are OK with having employees that never went to college as long as they look a certain way or this is all bunk in an effort to hire young enthusiastic employees that have no room to negotiate after a certain age...

As we just saw many wealthy families bribe their children into an Ok college... I bet all the wealthy people above will make sure their children attend college. I will bet all their wives and friends went to college. I will bet they never shared a beer with friends that never went to college.

Please don't be stupid. Finish college, learn something that interest you, give back to society.

Maybe all these policy discussions are bunk and every child in America should expect the same quality of education a student at Exeter would demand.

erik998··on Employee activism in tech stops short of organizing unions
Same could be said about all the young and hopeful people that show up in L.A.... Self taught or professionally trained they show up to casting calls/interviews and demonstrate their work. Sometimes self taught actors get a good gig and join SGA and continue in their career. SGA does not assure anyone success it's just there to make sure actors don't get abused in the process.

Imagine how many people have gone to Silicon Valley and worked their butts off in a startup that really went nowhere. It would be nice if they had a union that had resources to indicate if the developer should quit, go to another startup, or take another position. An intermediary that could assist with some analysis of the cap/gap tables would be helpful. A union that could indicate the daily minimum pay with a startup would be nice.

If you want to tinker with code no one would stop you. But if you got a gig and tinker with code after 3 paychecks you could join a union. Many actors don't join SGA when they start. They take on multiple gigs and then decide if the fee is worth it. Plenty of youtube videos go over the options. It seems very flexible. I don't understand why there is resistance to the idea. It's not some factory union. A Software dev guild similar to SGA seems most appropriate. Essentially most dev roles are contract roles for a short amount of time 3 months - 3 years.

Imagine if we got residuals from our code... Best incentive to document, unittest, and push some code library.
