ericol··on Show HN: Faktor – The missing 2FA code autocomplete for Chrome
I use both Bitwarden (Personal, recommended by a friend, paid for a year in advance) and 1Pass (Paid by my company).

The level of friction Bitwarden adds as compared to 1Pass is staggering.

Also, their Firefox extension eats resources like a new baby (I had to disable it because just a handful of tabs [1] were killing my machine).

[1] May be a little more than a handful, but having to disable an extension so that your machine behaves normally is telling.

Thanks for the link. I'll definitely watch it this weekend.

I read a post some time ago that explained how that test came to be - It was created by Ryan Gosling of all people - and it's an incredible story inside an incredible story.

Not sure if this [1] is the post I read back in the day, so I hope it does explain the story correctly (Haven't read this one in particular, just googled for it). Then I thought "May be I picked that from Hacker news" [2] and [3] (May be you should go at these in reverse order)

I watched the movie first, found out who wrote it, and read the book it was in.

I did love a lot the short story, and kind of got mad at "Arrival" for some of the changes it makes to the story. But. After several (SEVERAL) re watches of the movie, I got to "understand" what Villeneuve was about, and I fell in love with the movie as well.

It currently sits in probably my top 5 preferred movies to re watch (Being the others both Blade Runners, About Time & Notting Hill in no preferred order)

I think what this means is that she used her Czech passport when leaving a country, and used the Russian passport when entering Russia (Thus leaving no trace of her entering the EU as a Russian national).

That's far from "sophisticated tradecaft" though. For instance a large % of Argentinians have double nationality (Myself included) and we do this all the time when travelling to Europe.

> Its likely that the current m3 will remain usable as a laptop for a few more years due to extra ram and storage, but it has a shelf life for high end workloads...

Isn't that my point exactly? (Sorry if I miss explained myself, not a native speaker and I didn't quite proofread my comment either)

What I want to say is, I have the feeling my M3 is going to provide good service for probably a longer time than Apple is expecting to, and the only reason that'll make me change is having the need - and the money - for a better option.

And I do think one of the biggest reasons as to why I might not make the switch is due to how incredible well this machine is engineered.

As I'm kind of Apple's target pop - I did buy, afterall, 2 machines from them in a very short span of time - the previous point I made plays against them.

> I'll give you all your money back for you M3, and give you the M1 you have/had only at a maxed out spec.

> Would you take the deal?

Depends on the deal, but very likely yes. Maxed out M1's are incredible capable machines in my opinion.

Thanks for your comment!

ericol··on Growth is a mind cancer
> So what do you propose instead?

Make a product so good that people would choose to switch.

I bought a Mac M1 2 years ago. I did some really shitty research when buying it - I didn't have that much money available at the time tbh, even thought at the time they were cheaper in my country (don't ask) than in the US - and went for the lower end of the MacBook Pro. That's a decision I regretted almost immediately, and then end of last year I decided to go for an M3 with better specs.

With this machine, the only thing that is probably going to make me change - besides it breaking down - is probably blazing fast IA capabilities (As in, real-time LlaMA stuff, or similar).

Otherwise I plan to use this machine for as long as I can keep using it. Same applies to my iPhone 13; unless I see a real need for changing it, I'm keeping it - that is if I don't decide to go back to middle tier Samsung phones that in my opinion are better than iPhones.

ericol··on Airbnb is broken, CEO says – His plans to fix it
Without the intention of starting a flame war, all the issues I've read so far in this thread seem to be US bound.

I've booked AirBnB's in 5 different countries (Spain mostly, but also Germany, Poland, Thailand and Argentina).

Thailand was 5 years ago, thought, so your mileage might vary nowadays.

Biggest issue we ever had - family trip, mind you - was a booking in Granada last year that was very obviously double booked (We got to it and there were suitcases and clothes everywhere).

One phone call later we were upgraded to a a better apartment in the same building, and the host apologized profusely.

We (GF and I) are AirBnB host ourselves in Buenos Aires, and we strive to provide the best service possible.

Competition has been fierce here as well for the past 12 months or so (Even thought after a little market research I managed to maximize our returns).

Here if you don't provide a good service you're gone. There are no second chances.

Regarding the whole AirBnB matter I think also one of their biggest problems right now is that booking.com is giving them a run for their money.

ericol··on Show HN: I made an all-in-one desktop app with a no-BS approach to get work done
Creative cloud all apps + 100 GB.

Argentina is a weird country.

ericol··on Show HN: I made an all-in-one desktop app with a no-BS approach to get work done
The JetBrains price is the international price, they don't have a regional price as Adobe. Guess should have been clear that the JB price is because I've been a subscriber for years now, still the reason for that if that they offer a lot of bang for those bucks.

> I do feel it is a bit hard to nail the best pricing model that works for everyone

I understand the reason for going with a subscription model, but in your case I think that works for you only, not for your users.

ericol··on Show HN: I made an all-in-one desktop app with a no-BS approach to get work done
Seems nice, but not even trying it.

I discard immediately any subscription based app that doesn't provide a clear and useful service for / because of the subscription (as a side note, this is apparently not highlighted in any capacity in your website, and it seems to be you don't offer any kind of cloud related storage).

Before you say "but what's 5 bucks a month" well the reason for me saying no to 5 bucks a month is the same reason why you charge 5 bucks: You're looking at volume.

People needs to realize that by offering subscription only apps, they are competing in a very, very crowded market. Only those apps that offer a real value get a sustained subscription.

For the record, 5 bucks is more or less the same amount I pay in my country for the full set of Adobe apps, and half of what I pay for the full set of JetBrains tools (International price). The other two services I pay for are OpenAI and Github Copilot.

P.S.: In my opinion JetBrains offers the best subscription model there is, that is a "hybrid" model. It's subscription based, but if you paid a full year (Not calendar) you get the last version available for the calendar year which ends inside the period you paid (Or that is how I understand it).

ericol··on YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
He can solve it if he tells yt-dlp to download a mix of .mp4 and .m4u
ericol··on YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
That is because by default yt-dlp tries to download the best / better format available and (I take it the context of your downloads are YT) these are the best ones available.

You can customize which format to download by doing first:

yt-dlp -F <url>

Check what numbers are there, and then download the formats you want.

You can customize both the video format & rate, and same for sound, by using

yt-dlp #+# <url>

Where the first hash is the id of the video stream, and the 2nd hash is the id of the audio id.

Take into account that you'd probably need also ffmpeg available on the command line for this; that if you "mix" containers (Say, a webm video and an m4u audio stream) you-ll end up with an .mkv container; and finally, that all of the downloaded streams are themselves containers (.m4u, mp4 & webm).

ericol··on Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live is a beautiful relic – and the end of an era
The comment above _is_ pedantic. It's stating that the name of the movie IS Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka, that could be roughly translated to "How do you live?"

Any other post about this movie, in any other language, is going to make the same "mistake".

ericol··on Ask HN: Are people in tech inside an AI echo chamber?
I wouldn't say it's an echo chamber. I'd say it's a bubble (But without the negative connotations).

This tech is in its infancy, and the whole "prompt engineering" thing even though fun and all, will eventually be unnecessary, and _then_ it'll be widespread.

I've even spoke to friends IN the tech industry that are not using it, at least not to the extent of a lot of people is using it.

And even I am not using it as much as I would like, but then I don't have enough free time.

All in all, just give it time. In my case, I hardly use Google these days.

ericol··on Natural language is an unnatural interface
TBH I have no idea [1] but I have quite a low limit of expenses using the API (10 bucks) and I'm yet to reach it.

Besides that, you can as well log in via web (That I haven't done, but it's possible)

As a side note, even thought the friction might be too high I couple it with the same programmer's MacWhisper, so that when I need a large text I just speak to the computer.

[1] Geez. I just checked, and my cumulative expenses for June are a staggering 0.27 USD

ericol··on Natural language is an unnatural interface
As opposed to what?

I don't know about you, but for me on a personal level ChatGPT is a SERIOUS paradigm shift. I work on OSX, I use an app (MacGPT) that is always a keyboard shortcut away, and more often than not the responses are several times better than what Google will give me.

I know there are a lot of areas with high friction, but those will go away eventually and compared to what I was doing before, the friction is much much less.

Not to mention that it is a tool _I didn't have before_ and for me in some cases - specially those tasks that are unavoidable, you have to generally start from zero, and are a burden - my productivity has increased 3X

I'll take an unnatural interface any day if that's the end result.

ericol··on The gap between how old you are and how old you think you are
I guess it's never too late to divorce a lead weight. All in all, I'm happy for you.
ericol··on The gap between how old you are and how old you think you are
What's news, pussycat.

If we talk about how I feel, I think I'll be forever 30; that was around the time in my life when I had the most friends, experienced the most, traveled the most and had the most fun.

But then, last year I turned 50, and the realization that I have a lot more behind me than ahead is a thought that lives rent free in my mind now.

ericol··on How to Start Your Blog in 2023
An IDE using 2 GB of RAM? 2010 called, they want their IDE back.

In all seriousness I love me some JetBrains's, but boy do they eat RAM like there's no tomorrow.

Still a paying and satisfied customer.

ericol··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Some 15+ years ago (Don't quite remember the year, probably 2005) I bought myself an electric brush. My gf at the time mocked me for wasting money on "such an useless thing".

A few months later she went together with her sister to their annual dentist checkup. The dentist praised her sister for how clean her teeth were, while he told my gf hers were "OK". What was it that her sister was doing differently? She was using an electric toothbrush.

I'm pretty certain you can guess what was the very first thing my then gf did coming out of the dentist.
