ericcholis··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
I think the speakers in most TV's these days are a big culprit.
ericcholis··on Credit Karma fined $3M by FTC for misleading consumers with credit card offers
Unless they worked out a deal for impressions and not conversions. Handwaving the 90% behind some asterisk.
ericcholis··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
We've got a service in Western New York (letsgoatbuffalo.com, clever play on Let's Go Buffalo!). They used an old school bus to transport the goats, which sadly burned down. But, the Western New York community raised $16,000 via a go fund me for a new bus!
ericcholis··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
I think TikTok's creator fund has led to quite a large number of influencers across many interests and categories. Perhaps seeing the success that Vine failed to largely capitalize on.
ericcholis··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
This is an incredible idea.
ericcholis··on Morrowind 20-year anniversary book
I think it might have been my first experience being fully immersed in a world. Other games felt like they were just letting you into their playground.
ericcholis··on Things I’d want to see improved in WordPress core
I think your two points about Xdebug and PHP naming conventions aren't a fair lense on PHP as a whole. Seems that they're framed around how wordpress uses PHP (poorly) for some of the more basic abstractions.

You aren't likely to find those issues in any modern PHP Framework out the box.

ericcholis··on Ghost 5.0
Having started a large project in 2012/13 (which is still running), I wish I had done the same. Although, if I remember correctly, the ecosystem around Laravel was still very young at the time.
ericcholis··on macOS Multi-Monitor Problems
On the flip side, my late 2018 mac mini won't display at boot on my dual thunderbolt displays. I have to plug one into HDMI to get it to work. Works fine after boot.
ericcholis··on EBUG: The NHL's emergency backup goalie rule
Such an amazing story when it happens. It always seems that every player on both teams offers up huge congratulations to the EBUG afterwards. The team that the EBUG plays for puts that player on a pedestal and treats them like a king; win or loose. The fans really get behind it too. Ryan Vinz filled the backup position for the Sabres, while the backup played. He didn't see any play time, but still had a special memory for it.
ericcholis··on OpenSearch – open-source search and analytics based on Apache 2.0 Elasticsearch
I can't say enough nice things about Typesense. The team is super responsive, the hosted version is performant and affordable. There's some features missing when compared to other similar projects. But nothing terribly show stopping.
ericcholis··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
Supernote seems to be a popular alternative.
ericcholis··on LogJ4 Security Inquiry – Response Required
I've read speculation that this is to cover their own asses with various regulations. Not sure if there's any weight behind this.
ericcholis··on Free Postgres databases for small projects

ericcholis··on Interview with CEO of Flexport: Supply chain crunch, modern logistics
Having a friend in an adjacent business, my understanding is that the Freight Forwarding & Brokerage business was very "hands on" and not as "customer" friendly as tracking consumer shipments. I think Flexport is (was?) suggesting that they could modernize that business. Or, I completely missed the target on that perspective.
ericcholis··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
Same. I just wish you could transfer ownership of a tag between family members.
ericcholis··on Backblaze restore for Personal Backup is awful
I really want to use rsync.net, but the price per GB scares me off.
ericcholis··on MikroTik RouterOS v7 stable released
Does MikroTik live in the same prosumer space that made ubiquiti products so popular early on?
ericcholis··on Amazon is bypassing supply chain chaos with chartered ships and long-haul planes
Who's to say they don't turn around and sell the space and infrastructure as a service. Clearly there's a premium to be paid to get goods into the states by non-traditional means.
ericcholis··on Setting Up Cloudflare Argo and Access on a Raspberry Pi
Another nice alternative is Tailscale
ericcholis··on Bank transfers as a payment method
You can DEFIANTLY get a volume discount from any credit card processor based on volume. Typical large merchants are paying Interchange Plus at a much lower rate than what's listed on Stripe or Square. Interchange is the rate paid directly to the card issuer and Visa/MC. Plus is paid to the merchant account (Stripe).

The actual itemized fees inside of that Interchange fee are mind boggling.

ericcholis··on OpenStore Raises $75M to Acquire More Shopify Sellers
I'd imagine that targeting Shopify makes the process much easier for evaluation and migration.
ericcholis··on I bricked then recovered my reMarkable 2
I had a very similar problem, although the root cause was a drained battery. After finally charging it, the device was stuck in a boot loop.

I wasn't able to create a proper connection via the pogo; but the community was amazingly helpful (and appropriately critical of my poor soldering skills).

Since the device hadn't synchronized to the cloud in some time, I had to send it out for data recovery. The cost was worth it for me. Happily, the data was fully recoverable and I was able to simply get a drive image and work with it locally using a mix of traditional OS tools as well as tools provided by the Remarkable community.

ericcholis··on Retailers are spending millions to combat organized theft from stores
Slightly adjacent, fighting credit card disputes feels the same way. A company can prove without a doubt that it's a legitimate charge, only to have the case go to pre-arbitration; which in many cases is too costly to fight without certainty of winning.
ericcholis··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
One of the anti-vaxx or vaxx hesitant arguments is that Pharma can't be sued for damages under EUA. I'm honestly not sure how true that is precisely.
ericcholis··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
Lint rollers after a hike/walk isn't a bad idea either.
ericcholis··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
Pro TikTok take. It's easier and friendlier to consume. The algorithm is good at tailoring interests. But, it's more like TV than FB.
ericcholis··on Evolution of Search Engines Architecture – Algolia Search Architecture Part 1
Price is 100% why we're looking at typesense.
ericcholis··on Valve Steam Deck
40Whr battery. 2 - 8 hours
ericcholis··on Cloudproxy – hide your scrapers IP behind the cloud
https://www.scrapingbee.com/ does this as a service + a headless browser.
