eof··on Cocaine Paraphernalia Ads in the 70s
I take it to mean that the primary cultural association with cocaine was no longer “rich person drug,” while not saying anything at all about the drug of choice for the wealthy.
eof··on The Unfulfilled Promise of Serverless
Running a secure and reliable server is not trivial. Getting one up and running is easy, sure. Keeping it that way with 4 nines of reliability is anything but. Scaling past that one sever is it’s own task.

Talking about a cluster being elementary is frankly absurd.

I think you might be confusing “got it working!” with “hardened in production.“

eof··on The Unfulfilled Promise of Serverless
I kind of wonder if you and OP are talking about significantly different scale in amount of code/functionality/team size.

Perhaps I am just jaded, but I take it for granted that writing application logic is only ever going to be a significant minority of “your time”—in larger orgs there are teams specializing on the different monitoring, platform, infra, etc taxes that are a reality of running software at scale.

Five smart hackers that know aws and python well are going to get much further on lambda-all-the-things than an org of several thousand would, probably.

Lambda is also outrageously expensive at scale; but at the end of the day I’d chalk this up mostly to “OP not very good serverless compared to other patterns, fivea good at serverless”

eof··on IBM unveils 127-qubit quantum processor
I am surprised to see that growth given my intuition that each additional qubit would be harder than the previous to add to the system.

Are there any moores law type predictions/historical trackers for qubits?

eof··on How to invest without knowing the future
You probably need to do nothing, except maybe diversify.

Inflation will happen to also the goods and services offered by the companies in your portfolio.

It is not inflation itself that scares the market; it is the feds reaction to it, which will raise interest rates.

If interest rates rise, the yield you can receive from buying “risk-free” assets (ie treasury bonds) also rises.

When your risk free rate rises; the risk-on returns (especially of a high CAPE environment!) of being in the market are a lot less enticing.

So money flows from the market into bonds, and then the market drops.

If your portfolio drops along with the market at large, you’ve not really lost anything, it’s just the numbers changing (assuming you’re not retired or soon to be!).

Beyond waiting-and-seeing, taking out fixed interest loans to buy assets is probably a good move; unless the performance of those assets is tied to the interest rates (ie probably a wash to buy a home now if you expect interest rates to rise)

eof··on Used car market gets even more bizarre
unless the collateral appreciates past some threshold of expectation
eof··on Used car market gets even more bizarre
anecdotally; the lower end of the car market doesn't really seem affected. prices for 10+ year old cars that aren't "nice" but are easily reliable with regular maintenance still seem widely available and cheap.

tangentially; I have always seen the premium for a nice car to be a really low value at normal income levels.

Everything about this exchange seems fine to me. You asked a clarifying question about an “advanced” usage of the question mark, and you were answered with a neutral description of what’s going on.

Some instruments are made for beginners. I think the same correlations would be easy to find in software productivity.

eof··on Police have been quitting in droves in the last year
I don't disagree that this is not surprising; but no one really takes issue with the fact that the most of them are professional.

The issue is that the minority of bad cops are vigilantly protected.

The accountability for cops is almost non existant, and the power they hold is tremendous.

Anyone who genuinely thinks that the police aren't in many dimensions being "fairly demonized", seems to me, to be extremely likely to come from a well-to-do background.

I am white; spent my youth being a dirty hippy. I was endlessly harassed by cops who absoluted loved to wield their power to literally ruin your life.

As I've gotten older and more invisibly middle class, I no longer fear the police, but I have basically zero sympathy for them.

Once they stop protecting the bad cops, they will easily win over the hearts and minds of citizens.

eof··on Tech Startups Say New Pay Rules for H-1B Visas Are Unaffordable
Because they just aren’t that good? Just because someone calls themselves a software engineer, or had a degree in computer science, it doesn’t mean they can take the place of a strong, seasoned engineer. The market is so competitive it’s pretty absurd to think anyone is being passed over because it’s cheaper to hire people on visas, at least when it comes to software engineers.

eof··on Cracking the knuckles is probably harmless
I’ve been an insatiable knuckle cracker my entire life. I remember being told all the time it would cause arthritis.

Glad to hear it probably doesn’t.

It does feel like a release to me, which if it is “similar to a popping balloon,” holds some merit.

I learned, to a lot of delight, to crack the “third” joint of my thumb, sometime in high school. It’s something I often spontaneously do.. anyone I’d be holding hands with. They invariably get a little creeped out. Then ask me to do the other one.

eof··on LSD Chemist William Pickard to Be Released from Prison
That’s an over simplistic and not realistic view. Marihuana had a similar history as tobacco, opiates go back thousands of years, caffeine is deemed fine, alcohol was actually illegal for years, etc.

Considering the counter culture and anti war (and thus anti military industrial) sentiment being highly correlated with hippies getting lit—I think it’s impossible not to come to the conclusion that the powers that be consider mind expanding drugs to be a threat to the order of things.

eof··on AWS Snowcone
I don't think that's a very realistic outlook. Most money spent in aws is not by noobs going over their free tier not realizing they could have bought a raspberry pi; it's by institutions that are paying for convenience and know it.

I’m no statistician, but I’m very doubtful of the numbers coming out of China. I’d be interested to see how this changes with any given countries data excluded. My suspicion is removing China’s would move the needle more than any other country.

eof··on Ask HN: What job can a “jack of all trades” look for?
I would market yourself as a generalist. Small and medium sized companies under rapid growth need generalists more than anything; especially if your soft skills are good and you can mentor/lead other engineers.

I went through triplebyte as a generalist and it literally changed my life; I had lots of competing offers well beyond what I thought was in my reach.

My role is now 'engineering manager' but I was hired as a staff software engineer; but into an org on a stack I had zero experience with.

If I did it again I would probably do the same thing; but I would also be looking at sales engineering roles; something I wasn't really aware of at the time.
