emptysongglass··on Tesla's week gets worse: Fines, safety investigation, and recall
The word, "recall", has a myriad of definitions. In this particular use of the word, it has a historical basis in physical vehicle recalls to the service center. That an agency has since decided it also applies to OTA patches does not change this fact or how it is perceived by people at large.
emptysongglass··on Tesla's week gets worse: Fines, safety investigation, and recall
But that's now how most people view a recall. That's the point. It's clearly a move meant to drive clicks. A news source could write, a "software patch to fix blabla was sent out" but they instead opt for the more alarming language that has its roots in physical units of x item returning to a service center for service.
emptysongglass··on Tesla's week gets worse: Fines, safety investigation, and recall
I dislike how news sources are abusing the word recall. Recalling every Tesla on the road means an OTA patch. Most casual readers will assume recall to mean the car needs to be brought in for service.

Whatever your thoughts on Tesla, this is a scummy tactic.

Somehow your only suggestions from HN have been the official propaganda paper of the CPC and a newspaper owned by Alibaba.

The news source you're looking for is Bill Bishop's Sinocism. It's a paid Substack. I haven't found any other news source that really gets into the nitty gritty of China happenings.

emptysongglass··on Nearly 25,000 tech workers were laid off in the first weeks of 2024.Why is that?
Why does an economy need to run on boom and bust cycles that require so much manual steering and adjustment? Feels like we're always teetering on the edge.

Is this the way capitalism was meant to be? Isn't there some healthier alternative? I've lived through what feels like half a dozen at this point.

emptysongglass··on Expert sounds alarm on new wave of US opioids crisis
I'm talking about general and specialist care in the public system. Our private system is pretty good but you either need to pay insurance for it or, if the public wait-list extends beyond 6 months for surgical treatment, our public healthcare will pay for you to be referred to a private hospital.

The less said about our mental healthcare the better.

> I also did not get your last paragraph are you talking about the US or Denmark? I would be shocked to hear income inequality problem is worse in Denmark.

I was shocked too when I first heard it but live here long enough and it's very obvious. Income inequality has increased over the last thirty years with a Gini coefficient of 30 [1] in 2022.

I am using the same language as the commenter I replied to. That was intended.

As a fellow Dane, you must also know how close our public healthcare is to crumbling, how long wait times are for care, our record highest cancer rate in the world of any nation, and a policy of treating only acute conditions (no cancer screenings deemed "unnecessary" etc.)

I have been misdiagnosed a number of times and was finally treated in the US for a major condition the doctors missed here in Denmark.

We get a number of privileges for our very high tax: childcare is cheap, education is free, and births cost us virtually nothing but let's not try and overstate the value of our system to theirs. Ours too is broken, it's just a matter of degrees and where.

Our middle-class, in return, gets taxed to high heaven while our income disparity between rich and poor continues to widen.

emptysongglass··on The Earthquake That Will Devastate the Pacific Northwest (2015)
Many words spent to justify owning a battle rifle that boils down to

> So if you ask someone else on the opposite side of a culture war argument, “Why would you want to own one of those things, anyway?” please don’t be surprised if they simply respond, “Why wouldn’t you?”

They also admit the sample size of a few hundred years for the US is poor before then going on to compare the US to autocratic countries like Russia.

Let's say you now own a battle rifle. Now what? Well, you can't just have a battle rifle lying around the house. So you buy a battle rifle safe. Now what? Well, you can't just own a battle rifle and now know what to do with it in case all Hell breaks loose can you? So now you have to go down to the shooting range and learn how to shoot the thing. Now what? The heavily armed squads that are going to be raiding your block are probably really good shooters so you better buy a few more and buy lessons for the whole family. See where I'm going with this?

A prepper's mind geared up for such a man-on-man scenario of doomsday violence will never be satisfied.

emptysongglass··on The Earthquake That Will Devastate the Pacific Northwest (2015)
It's at this point when preparedness turns into weird, fringe thinking that's also dangerous. A battle rifle can be used to hurt people. Assuming others will try to hurt you in an emergency event is the basis for what people think of when they imagine "peppers": basically, people who believe the world and everything in it is out to get them.

It doesn't hurt to be prepared but spending a significant part of your life crafting your post-apocalyptic future informs more about your stance toward living and toward people than it does healthy relations with the world.

> I'm sick and tired of people who get emotional and are patriotic. Why can't people be level headed and just talk about facts rather then "defend" their stance or their own country.

I specifically called out false claims you made out as fact. Your claims were not factual and I did not misconstrue them.

The US is at one of the lowest unemployment rates over its entire history. It is at the lowest level over the last 54 years. [1] That's fact. Your claim was false.

Inflation in America is not under any long- or short-term trend of increasing. That is a false claim you have made and continue to shelter behind. Inflation increased because of a global calamity the entire world suffered under. That was an acute crisis, not a trend.

China has an unemployment rate among its youth well over 20 percent. That is not a blip. That is institutional failure caused by decades of mismanaging a population under an authoritarian government.

emptysongglass··on The Pokemon Company releases a statement regarding Palworld
> That isn't how 3D modelling works at all.

That's a blanket statement that's meaningless.

Uniformly scaling a model, which is what the post you linked to admitted, is a perfectly fine method of comparison. If I uniformly shrink an object, that does not change the nature of the object other than to make it smaller or larger.

If I take an apple, produce a copy, shrink it, then compare it, the apple is still the same apple.

Now Palworld has changed some very minor details with some of these models but you'd really need to be committed to mental gymnastics to justify the changes between these models as anything but the weakest of attempts to dodge a lawsuit.

emptysongglass··on The Pokemon Company releases a statement regarding Palworld
People have stuck mesh models of Palworld pals inside Pokèmon to compare. It's not subjective. It's straight up theft in a number of cases.
emptysongglass··on Chinese researchers planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
Problems are not a like-for-like exchange. It's a completely meaningless statement you're making. Having cancer and having a cold are both illnesses. The severity of the two are not alike.

The US' unemployment fell to 3.7 percent end of December. [1] Inflation fell to 3.4 percent. Please do your research before commenting.

I have an 11th gen and have terrible battery life. Always have. I would not describe the Linux support from Framework as sterling but bad battery life remains the same between my Linux and Windows sides if a little better on Windows.

Just based on this very comment thread you're wrong, so how are we to trust any of your other rebuttals?

Even well-sourced critiques of China are greytext so one may as well assume the opposite if they were taking your position.

emptysongglass··on The teen mental illness epidemic is international (2023)
I find the people protecting the woke tribe in these comments to lack any subjectivity or critical distance whatsoever. Are they accurately representing their ideological adversaries with drive-by derision and dismissing out of hand an article that doesn't spend the majority of its time hand-wringing the issue like they do?

The more I see of these snide attacks, the less I believe there's any veracity at all in their belief system, which now spans an entire constellation of fringe politics turned mainstream.

emptysongglass··on Podman Desktop 1.6 released: Even more Kubernetes and Containers features
Is there a method to set these flags for all Electron apps on Linux?
emptysongglass··on Evaluating new software forges
I disagree and think it's time we all moved on from kneejerk hating anything either a. new or b. misunderstood. That includes things like AI, containers and Kubernetes.

Kubernetes started in a rough shape but it has been chiseled over the years to be boring tech that just works and provides a layer of abstraction to build abstractions on top of.

I've been working with Kubernetes for the past 6 years. It's fine. It does its job. Let's all move on from the outrage.

emptysongglass··on Evaluating new software forges
I've been running the GitLab Omnibus for 4 years now. Easiest upgrades ever. Never once had a bad update that required manual workarounds.
emptysongglass··on Evaluating new software forges
I'm not sure you'd want any forge evaluated by this author: they're extremely caustic, negative, and critical. Jaded people in tech like this I just try and avoid, especially when they come out against unalloyed good tech like containerization. Containers are just namespaces with additions. They've allowed us to narrow the gap of capability between the big three OSes, even if the other two need to virtualize Linux to do so.

There's also nothing wrong with LLMs. How you choose to integrate them into your life or forge is a choice but at the end of the day they're just another tool in the toolbelt. Pick what you want or need and leave the rest. I'm not forced to use Copilot but I appreciate it when I need it.

emptysongglass··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
That is totally wild to me. Of course we are entitled to free notifications if we run the infrastructure. Who is subsidizing my XMPP client notifications? Why has this never been a problem for any other chat client until Zulip? If literally every other chat client to a FOSS chat server can make it work without crumpling under costs, Zulip is in the wrong and should not do this.
emptysongglass··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
As I wrote under another comment, this doesn't seem like a good reason or I must be missing something because I can selfhost Matrix or an XMPP server and get notifications for free with any client.

Whatever Zulip is offering here is not good and if these other offerings can make it free, Zulip should be able to too without charge or requiring I recompile their app.

emptysongglass··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
Wait why does selfhosting Matrix and using the Element app give me notifications for free but Zulip tells me I can pay them or recompile my app? Does that seem right to you?
