emptyfile··on The Great Illyrian Revolt
Interesting, despite living in Croatia I had never heard of this rebellion, neither in school or in my spare time history reading.

On the other hand, the rugged eastern Adriatic coast and interior, with its many isolated islands and hills, was apparently a pirate sanctuary since records began so not too surprising.

Still, I would've thought that by Caesar's and Octavian's time the immediate vicinity of Italy would've been firmly under Roman control.

emptyfile··on British industry calls for regulation of autonomous vehicles
They were the EU's California. Not anymore.

So no, their effect isn't outsized these days.

emptyfile··on Facebook LLAMA is being openly distributed via torrents
I don't think most people have their employer recording their screens or looking over their shoulder?
emptyfile··on A runner who leads every pack and then vanishes
Well the glaring omission is that you apparently don't do any knee strengthening exercises even though your knees hurt?

How do you expect to have strong knees without squats, lunges, etc? It's like saying you're bad at math and expect to magically get better at it, without actually practising math.

Even doing a few sets of squats every day is better then nothing, and for some reason most newbie runners think they can do nothing, with zero sports background, and still run every other day.

emptyfile··on I deleted all my social media 3 yrs ago and I hardcore regret it everyday
Really sad post.

The whole point of not using social media is to push you to actually meet people in real life. Form real connections instead of reading single sentence comments.

This guy is too scared to even make a new profile because he would have to send new friend requests to all of his "friends".

emptyfile··on I don’t want to be an internet person
I'm sorry, are you making some sort of offensive joke or do you really think the world works in such stereotypes and prejudices?

Rave people are "brightly colored and fidgety" ?? A polished entrepreneur is incapable of ordering in a low class bar?

Jesus F Christ.

emptyfile··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
ChatGPT has quite literally nothing to do with tech lay-offs.

Read a freaking newspaper once in a while.

emptyfile··on TikTok is transforming the music industry. Is that a good thing?
Is it any good? I'll believe it when I hear it.
emptyfile··on Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 EV makes its US debut
Do HN readers even grasp the fact that most people in the world don't have a bunch of Tesla chargers on their highways? That you're writing your comments on the global internet?

That some people drive into nature where there is no electricity whatsoever?

emptyfile··on My ADHD founder toolbox
And yet I'm seeing here a whole thread of people talking about astronomical doses, reduced effects after tolerance kicks in, negative experiences and so on. So classic drug talk.

Seems pretty strange that I should take your sourceless claims as gospel over theirs.

>Stimulant medication aren't speed, they're like "1/100 speed".

These are literally two identical substances with almost identical effects (the only difference is the ration of amph salts). Difference is dosage.

Can't understand why would you claim what you say, when Adderall is used and abused in the same exact manner as amphetamine paste is in Europe. Anecdotally I hear in USA they throw it at you like candy.

>But comparing them to speed is just wrong and irresponsible,

I stand by what I said, if you saw the numbers of amphetamine addicts on the street in USA the same way you see opoid addicts, you would have a different national perspective on these drugs.

>it makes people afraid of trying what could be effective treatment

Yes, they should be cautions in my opinion.

I personally am not taking any new chances with addiction, even though I'm sure I would have benefits, at least short term.

I'll just hobble along. Using crutches can make physical rehabilitation impossible.

emptyfile··on My ADHD founder toolbox
I don't care about stigma, but comparing a drug to a wheel chair is just ridiculous.

I don't want to get addicted to another thing in my life, here in Europe we're quite familiar with (ab)using speed (amphetamine paste) and the idea of being on speed every single day seems pretty bad.

I don't feel "more like myself" on speed and I seriously doubt most positive effect would persist after a year of using and rising tolerance.

emptyfile··on Friendship Forever
>You’re saying that when being gay was literally a criminal offense straight guys didn’t have to worry about holding hands?

Is that really so shocking to you? You can observe this in any Arab Muslim country today.

emptyfile··on Digital books wear out faster than physical books
Sounds like it is actually hard to store books correctly.

I couldn't even be bothered to bring my couple of hundred children's books when I moved from my parents house, let alone 30 000.

emptyfile··on The positive effect of walking on creative thinking (2014) [pdf]
Walking shouldn't hurt your back and its very worrying that it does, you should look into some resistance exercise.
emptyfile··on TikTok’s greatest asset isn’t its algorithm, it’s your phone
>A friend of mine who is very seriously into bodybuilding gets some crazy useful (according to him) exercise technique/regimen videos that are very far from the mainstream "exercise routine/fitness advice" videos.

yeah, getting "non-mainstream" fitness advice from freaking short form videos is just about the dumbest thing I've heard this month

tell your friend to read a book sometimes, there's a reason why they exist and it's not to sell more ads unlike some other media ...

emptyfile··on Commission proposes to accelerate the rollout of instant payments in euro
Europeans are so far ahead the US in mobile payments its not even funny.
emptyfile··on It's time to admit self-driving cars aren't going to happen
Talking to a developer about self-driving cars is a good litmus test of sincerity and/or competence.

Utterly unbelievable that Tesla is still selling "Full self driving" cars to customers.

emptyfile··on DJ Turntables: Buying Guide by Vekked (2016)
What you're looking for is a beginner DJ controller, it has a mixer and sound card built into it in one small package.

As the other poster said, I bought myself a Native Instuments S2 and couldn't be happier for the price, minimalist but with a great build quality and you get the Traktor Pro 3 software included in the price.

emptyfile··on Illegal host, electric shocks, slugs, leaks and no support – How Airbnb failed
The comment said that booking.com is cheaper, not safer.

Which it is, which is why on my trip to London in a month I rented over booking and not AirBnB.

Why would I choose a more expensive service with zero additional benefits? Because their app is more cool?

emptyfile··on The sarcastic fringehead's broad-mouthed display is reserved for fighting

emptyfile··on An Interview with Jerry Seinfeld (2017)
I disagree with every single point of this comment. And I'm not even a big Seinfeld fan.
emptyfile··on Wikipedia is not short on cash
You might be confused, we're talking about Wikipedia not the Red Cross.

Wikipedia doesn't help starving children in any way.

emptyfile··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
Was that a question? Of course not. In fact the parent comment even provides an example.
emptyfile··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
You misunderstand, these kids don't go to live in poverty, they go to watch poverty.

Same, for the full experience the author should've sold his house and lived on his salary.

emptyfile··on The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken
Wait until you hear that some people don't even have indoor plumbing, 24h electricity and enough protein to eat, let alone extra income to waste on children's entertainment.
emptyfile··on Too Much Internet
Another post written by an American who thinks Twitter is the arbiter of what's popular and the centre of the internet.

Newsflash: Twitter peaked in 2018 with 336m users, significantly less then other social networks.

If there weren't so many news reporters on it, it would be rather obscure to non english speakers.

emptyfile··on Google is shutting down Stadia
When they literally had to remove "don't be evil" as their company slogan, on account of how evil they are, that did it for me.
emptyfile··on On Mr. Beast and being alone in a circle for 100 days
You're both equally disgusting.
emptyfile··on Ask HN: What Is Happening in the UK?
Having austerity during low rates and fiscal expansion during high rates is a pretty bad idea.

However, if your currency is NOT the US dollar, then its a catastrophically bad idea.

In short: Truss and Kwarteng are intellectual lightweights whose economic ideas make for funny reading* but in reality are a recipe for disaster. Their line of delusional thinking can be traced directly to Brexit, when the UK lost their collective minds.
