elliotpage··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
I've been using the app "StreetComplete" on Android, I have found it to be a really seamless and easy way to add extra details to OpenStreetMap while roaming around.
elliotpage··on No Data Centers in My Backyard
As you say, the distrust is backed up by evidence and by their own personal experience of the same promises getting trotted out time after time, generation after generation.

These people, these communities, have been promised these same things before (or things adjacent to them) and have seen them not deliver, or even make their situation worse.

This is especially true of the tax income and job generation elements. The estimates provided as part of the deal are utterly divorced from reality- people know it and refuse to take part in the kayfabe that surrounds it.

elliotpage··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
It seems like self-reflection on why this is the case is not one of his talents!
elliotpage··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
I'm glad that I'm not the only person who felt this! It does feel like the post is missing some deserved self-reflection.
elliotpage··on Kiki – Accountability monster for people who are easily distracted
This is a nice idea, but no firefox support and subscription model means this isn't getting used (by me, at least).
elliotpage··on DOOM CAPTCHA
Guess I'm not a human, I got owned by the imps because I assumed left and right would be strafing instead of turning.
elliotpage··on Rabbit: LLM-First Mobile Phone
I scrolled the webste twice but I cannot figure out what this object is for?
elliotpage··on Godot 4.2 Released
Great stuff in this release. Also thanks to the influx of former Unity users a lot of tools / modules / templates have been given a shot in the arm and the general maturity of Godot has increased a great deal recently. Its not yet at a level that some people would want, but its great to see progress.
elliotpage··on The New Godot Development Fund
I don't see why there cannot be both? GDScript is perfectly useful.
elliotpage··on I’m an ER doctor. Here’s how I’m already using ChatGPT to help treat patients
Gotta love a classic Conflict of Interest!
elliotpage··on Where can I see Hokusai's Great Wave today?
This is a great project, I wish you well in seeing the work again!

If you would like your own ersatz version, lego make a set approximating this lovely art work in their own style.

elliotpage··on Discord’s username change is causing discord
I hope the headline writer got the rest of the day off after writing that banger
elliotpage··on One AI Tutor Per Child: Personalized learning is finally here
> "Before you think we are anarchist hippies rejecting all systems and institutions outright"

Not even close, you sound like Libertarian-adjacent technologists who have been believing your own hype / some other equivilent metaphor.

Technology has a role to play in education that is as-yet unrealised and while I cannot speak for all of them, I know the system in place in the UK is behind the curve. The solution to this isn't to pull your kids out and use them as the cornerstone of an individualised experiment but to fight for better funding of the educational system itself. I hope this does not have any negative consequences for the kids who are the recipients of this trial.

elliotpage··on Italian prosecutors probe Meta for '870Ms EUR tax evasion'
Given the degree of Tax Evasion in Italy it makes sense they would be investigating it - after all they are experts!

Joking, of course.

elliotpage··on Show HN: Self-host Whisper As a Service with GUI and queueing
This looks really good, thanks! Really appreciate this and all the other Whisper implementations in this thread as I am sorting up transcriptions for my 120+ podcast episodes.
elliotpage··on 9 years maintaining a sorta-popular open-source package: lessons learned
Agreed, this is really smart. I imagine (hope!) it also cuts down on recurring feature requests as it allows you to open up the realm of possibility for using the library in the users head - instead of needing to program in every use case, you introduce someone to serving themselves.
elliotpage··on 9 years maintaining a sorta-popular open-source package: lessons learned
Ditto. I use them to (hopefully) send good vibes the the creator / maintainer - you never know, they may need the tiny endorphin hit!
elliotpage··on Show HN: Trading cards made with e-ink displays
Was it intentional to have the pin layout be in the shape of the Sefirot? Either way, spooky!
elliotpage··on Mastodon’s eternal September begins?
This post is fascinating- it uses "I" and "We" so interchangeably that it is almost dizzying.

I want to ask them: what do you want? If you run your own Mastodon server you have a large degree of control over how that is run and federates, so can customise your experience. To continue the analogy, you can stop people invading your house party.

Then there is the cultural lamentation and the "no-one asked if I wanted that" line, which is wild because cross-posting has been around for as long as there have been platforms. It just happens.

elliotpage··on Swatch Internet Time
I love Swatch Internet Time - as others have mentioned, I used it constantly via Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast. I used the .beats watchface on my Pebble until it died, too.

A second run at .beats with a clear mind and an open standard could nail down the awkward parts (Set 000 as midnight UTC for example) but I doubt there is the motivation to try the exercise again.

elliotpage··on In the battle over the right to repair, open-source tractors offer alternatives
I would love to see iFixIt do a teardown of one of these tractors.
elliotpage··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
I am sorry, but I strongly disagree.

The Marquee text is what catapulted the site from "This is nice" to "This is Art" for me.

But then again I am more viewing the page as a piece of performance art than an actual attempt to sell me a keyboard!

elliotpage··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Site accessibility note: going to www.electronicmaterialsoffice.com redirects you to a holding page.

I'm not sure I'll get one, but I like the site design - it feels almost pornographic.

elliotpage··on Hispaniola's great divergence
Haiti had to be punished for its successful slave revolt and overthrow of its colonial master. Not just by that spurned overlord, but others who feared their own subjects looking at Haiti as a success and learning from it.

Yes, this is boiling down a lot of elements and caveats that can (and should!) Be made but at the core this is what happened.

elliotpage··on Lichess: The free and open source chess server
I use the android LiChess app to play my dad, works wonderfully.
elliotpage··on LG 28-inch 16:18 DualUp Monitor
This reminds me of the Eizo 1:1 format monitor that I always coveted but never bought. Now it appears they are no longer being made.

elliotpage··on Datto founder shares thoughts on kaseya acquisition
"- Making changes to key benefits like maternity leave (down from 16 weeks to 3 weeks)."

This change in particular stood out to me. 16 weeks is already too little but 3 weeks is just callous bordering on destructive.

If Kaseya wanted to put up red flags against working with them then they are succeeding.

Also from having used it recently their product is cumbersome trash! Sadly once it is in place ripping it out of 900 devices is a lot less appetising.

elliotpage··on The PocketReform is a made-in-Berlin Linux handheld
I am very tempted by this but what is going on with that spacebar? The older I get the more I realise that what I really want is an updated Psion 5.
elliotpage··on Photos of chickens, taken by chickens
I'm afraid I cannot "Not participate" in the ecological destruction they cause.
elliotpage··on GPT-4chan
Seeing this I initially let out a laugh until I scrolled down and saw that they trained this using /pol/. Even as cynical as I am I don't think the world deserves a infinite racism machine.

Why not train it using a more whimsical (although still offensive) board? You could probably automate all videogame discussion forevermore using /v/.
