electrichead··on Why was it believed that the Aztecs greeted Cortés as a deity?
Malcolm Gladwell also talked about it in the book "Talking to Strangers." It revolved around a breakdown on communication between the two and assumptions that they each had for the other.
electrichead··on MPAA Welcomes Netflix as New Member
Aren't the other members the ones that Netflix is disrupting in the first place? What can it hope to gain from this?

(Honest question)

electrichead··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
Did this one come with a DVD drive? You can swap out that for a secondary SSD
electrichead··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
I did exactly this a year ago but one caveat to note is that if you're using an external monitor, the video card in this one doesn't support a good resolution. I'm stuck with 1080p.
electrichead··on Dieter Rams designed products to last, is horrified how we throw things away
Are there examples of products made today that have this ethos of lasting for a lifetime?

As a side note on cars, what are some cars that would last a long time and are made of parts that are serviceable?

electrichead··on Chrome “clear cookies on exit” feature does not work
Serious question, is this a bug in Chrome that affects all cookies or is it something specific to that reddit.com cookie?

It might be the case that Reddit or another vendor just adds that cookie from other sites (like within a share button functionality)

electrichead··on Microsoft’s Resurgence Under Satya Nadella
You don't use GitHub or LinkedIn or Skype either?

You might also rely on sites that are built with Microsoft technologies (Stack overflow for example) or find that your workplace gets by with Excel.

It's hard to say you don't use their technologies.

electrichead··on Executive accused of harassment at Alphabet 'X' unit is out
That's not quite the same thing. He went there to find people who would be the type that go to events like this.

If you want to compare apples-to-apples, your friend would have been invited to Burning Man as part of the process of investing in his company (with it being implied that it is in their best interest to attend).

electrichead··on Why Can't Hollywood Make a Good Video Game Movie?
I just wanted to say that this article displayed quite nicely on my phone and was nice to read through.

On the topic, I do believe that there are worthy stories in video games that can be translated to the screen not just for those who don't play games, but also for gamers who want to relive some of the story without the tedious bits in between (like farming for XP or upgrading).

The new tomb raider was probably the closest so far. I liked the tie-ins with the game and the actress did a great job of bringing the game character to life. The few things I didn't like were some of the acting and one-dimensional supporting characters. Also some scenes were just contrived, but I suppose that creeps in according to budget and timing.

electrichead··on The manned elevators of NYC (2017)
If you're in Toronto, the Fifth grill has one too. It is such a long ride for such a short distance but pretty cool. The elevator is about a hundred years old
electrichead··on Notice of Data Breach
They would have had a long lived token though
electrichead··on Magic Leap One
I wonder how many people would have no idea how big a VHS tape is.
electrichead··on The End of Moore’s Law
I don't know if that needs any evidence of the person was simply around back then. Basically this is saying that 2001 hardware wouldn't be able to run the new software in 2007, which at least to my recollection, is absolutely true. Not only is there 32bit vs 64bit, we also started to see more cores rather than the standard single core in 2001
electrichead··on Sued over screenshots of 59-year-old show
The problem with that though is that it becomes a precedent (not in legal sense) and it might be tempting to just use images without paying the copyright owner, since you just need to settle for market value or a little more at the time that you're sued. It is a huge effort to go through media to make sure that your content is not being used without your consent and most independent people won't be checking it vigorously since they need the time to actually work.
electrichead··on Why You Can Focus in a Coffee Shop but Not in Your Open Office
I think that sometimes depends on the work culture rather than a person's personality. I've worked at places where managers do monitor your every move, look at how long you take at lunch, etc. Also co-workers sometimes think unfavourably of you if they think you are not pulling your weight even if you spend more time thinking than coding.

Let's not jump to conclusions.

electrichead··on Ask HN: What audio resources can improve my technical skills during my commute?
Linear Digressions is a great podcast to add to your list. It is not as regular as some of the others but the subjects are great. The hosts are also good.
electrichead··on An investigation into the economics of airplane seat reclining
I guess so. Every flight I've been on has made it uncomfortable for me if the person in front is reclining. The angle makes my laptop have to open less than 90 degrees (15"). The incline also has to begin below the knee (ie. at the base of your seat) because the seat is horizontal and seats are at the same level.

My knees usually touch the seat in front so I have to spread my legs awkwardly when the recline happens.

electrichead··on Emirates Says Bookings to the U.S. Fell by 35% After the First Travel Ban
This is a common misconception - "Arabic" isn't distinguishable like this since a lot of Arabs are fair-skinned.
electrichead··on Ask HN: What's the one thing that let you grow the most as a developer?
As a programmer: trying to learn to program in a functional programming language after years of writing imperative code changed the way I wrote code and the way I thought about problems. As a developer: working at startups helped me learn a broad range of things around my code: how to test, deploy, harden, etc. You are also able to see the entire product you are helping to build rather than at a larger organization where you might be assigned particular tasks.
electrichead··on “We have decided to disable IMDb's message boards”
I know that a lot of people don't frequent the boards so they might not see value in them, but I have a few experiences over the years that endeared this community to me. One was right after watching the second movie in the Matrix trilogy: the cliffhanger left so many open questions that the conversations around it were immensely interesting. I think actually that a few of the theories then (Zion in a zion and others) ended up being way more interesting than what actually happened in the third movie. In fact I think the Watchowskis were reading and following these theories themselves too or maybe I'm not remembering that correctly (it's been a while).

Another interesting one was right after watching Primer. A movie like that is meant to be talked about. I remember reading these boards and watching the movie again because there were so many interesting theories about what happened.

These are only two instances but over the years there were so many others where I'd watch a movie and then go to read about theories about the plot. The movie has to have a plot worth discussing for this to have value though, so in as non-condescending way as possible I wonder if perhaps people don't value that type of movie any more at all. Or maybe the number of boards where nothing interesting is being said dwarfs the ones that do. I don't know is, but I do feel like this is a huge loss because there are so many theories that will be lost forever.

electrichead··on New H1-B Visa bill doubles the salary requirements to $130K/yr
Although a startup might only marginally benefit because a single one would be a significant portion of their employees, right? So it would be over 15% right off the bat if they have fewer than 7 people
electrichead··on How Apple Alienated Mac Loyalists
That specific MBP has an issue with the logic board that they will replace for free. I used to have glitches as well and took it in and got a replacement. It's only until the end of the year so I would go and get them to have a look before the new year.
electrichead··on Dark Patterns – User Interfaces Designed to Trick People [video]
There's another one by Google maps where you can't choose to avoid tolls very easily. You also can't tell it to remember that you never want to use toll roads, so it is very easy for you to suddenly find yourself on a toll road.
electrichead··on High-Performance Infinite List in JavaScript
All the demos items are the same height. A big problem I have seen in the past has been with items with varying height. This makes it difficult to swap in new content because you don't know the height ahead of time. It might make for a a more impressive demo if you include random text in those cards. I haven't looked through the source yet since I am on a mobile device, but if you managed to solve that pain point, great work!
electrichead··on Hacker News is now more mobile friendly
It is such a huge relief for me. I read HN mainly on my phone and it has always been a painful experience to manually zoom in for each page. I can't wait for a truly optimized stylesheet but this is great in the meantime.
electrichead··on Ask HN: CoffeeScript or ClojureScript for writing a game in JS?
From my experience, coffeescript won't teach you anything new and won't give you any performance improvents. In fact, it will make you scratch your head a lot and will make you do a mental js-coffee conversion each time. You might end up liking it, but I think that clojurescript is the better bet here for performance gains as well as better coding in general, since its focus on functional programming is more concrete and inherent in it. Functional programming in coffeescript is exactly the same as in js ie. GIGO
electrichead··on Macaron: Macros for CoffeeScript
That might just be a bad example on the site but I'd there a better example for why we need it?
