elbrownoson This Chemical Does Not Exist

Atomic hydrogen definitely exists

elbrownoson Are Xiaomi browsers spyware? Yes, they are (2020)

I love Xiaomi phones, I've owned a couple. But I wouldn't dream of using them without first replacing MIUI with Lineage OS.

elbrownoson Let’s avoid talk of ‘chemical imbalance’: it’s people in distress

What makes you think cocaine is an MAOI?

elbrownoson An OCR cliche: Into his/her anus (2009)

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't stop it from sticking Lego up its bum."

Probably my favourite quote from the Inbetweeners.

elbrownoson Carlsberg glues beer cans together as it abandons plastic rings

Another article says "Alice Eriksen, the granddaughter of the Little Mermaid’s original sculptor, Edvard Eriksen, revealed the installation to the public today.

The mermaid “canstruction” will be on display to the public in the Carlsberg Visitor Centre in Copenhagen from Friday 7 September 2018." https://ciwm-journal.co.uk/carlsberg-makes-waves-to-reduce-p...

elbrownoson Iceland Takes Hard Look at Tech Boom Sparked by Its Cheap, Bountiful Power

The "web" link at the top bypasses the paywall. Accessing the article from Google also bypasses the paywall.

elbrownoson A silent epidemic of male suicide (2011)

I didn't realise it's actually illegal for media to report suicides in NZ.

elbrownoson Grateful Dead Fan Timothy Tyler Has Been Granted Clemency

The Philippines even gets a mention in the Wikipedia entry on summary execution.

elbrownoson Grateful Dead Fan Timothy Tyler Has Been Granted Clemency

elbrownoson How we're scammed into eating phony food

In the UK, most scampi (a crustacean) is actually monkfish tail.

elbrownoson Why Tech Support Is Purposely Unbearable

Not such a clever headline; the only people who say 'purposely' are toddlers and Americans.

elbrownoson Crescent Dunes, a utility-scale solar power plant in the Nevada desert

A hybrid plant isn't possible. Apart from both producing electricity from sunlight, a PV plant has nothing in common with concentrated solar thermal.

elbrownoson Lifting a Million Pounds of Stainless Steel

Those sound like great reasons to use something sensible like a hydraulic ram to apply 1,000,000 lbf. Force = pressure x area, and neither pressure nor area is difficult to measure precisely. I can't see the upside of using 1,000,000 lbm of stainless steel.

elbrownoson The cave divers who went back for their friends

We like to flatter ourselves that human flesh is super tasty and drives predators into a feeding frenzy. Why should it be?

elbrownoson Nearly all new diesel cars exceed official pollution limits

Sounds like an urban legend. DEF is 325 g/L urea. Urine is roughly 9.3 g/L urea. Not a great substitute.

elbrownoson How Scams Worked in the 1800s

This is a great book. I found the section about the Crusades especially interesting.

elbrownoson Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley

Not in the UK. December 2015 was the wettest month in recorded history.

elbrownoson The City States of Europe

Most of the UK already can't think of anything worse than living in London, and you want to make it 5 times more crowded?!

elbrownoson LG G5 modular phone: Hi-Fi DAC, battery slide out, connection interface

I don't follow. You're suggesting a good DAC can make crappy MP3 sound good over crappy earphones?

elbrownoson Why are submarines demagnetized?

Titanium allows an increase in dive depth but has no effect on speed.

elbrownoson Don't use the new prime number for RSA encryption

There are post-quantum cryptographic algorithms already, eg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supersingular_isogeny_key_exch...

elbrownoson How Do You Punish Your Employees?

It's satirical

elbrownoson Why the U.S. Navy's new $362M ship broke down

It's not that the metallic debris has caused the failure, but rather it indicates a serious failure has occurred inside the engine.

The fibre in whole fruit and vegetables blunts the rise in blood sugar level.
