eggspurt··on Leonardo Chiariglione – Co-founder of MPEG
From Leonardo, who founded MPEG, on the page linked: "Even before it has ceased to exists, the MPEG engine had run out of steam – technology- and business wise. The same obscure forces that have hijacked MPEG had kept it hostage to their interests impeding its technical development and keeping it locked to outmoded Intellectual Property licensing models delaying market adoption of MPEG standards. Industry has been strangled and consumers have been deprived of the benefits of new technologies. From facilitators of new opportunities and experiences, MPEG standards have morphed from into roadblocks."
eggspurt··on Developer as an Investor
It's been such a disappointing trend of companies initially welcoming developers, just to then eat their lunch. Twitter has been one of the worst: they killed their developer ecosystem.

We need to put some work into this...
eggspurt··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
To the contrary, it’s a service to the community to link other versions of the same story with the right context, facilitating discussion.

Also, you're actively suppressing African news sources, so I question your bias?

eggspurt··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
You might have to get your vision checked.

Nigerian media have more info about the suspect https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23871447
eggspurt··on What has Internet done to Media?
Marginal costs can be upheld through protection, self-regulation, and enforcement -- essentially of human rights.

I think people who are able to make a living by doing such work - won't burn all the money by buying yachts and party airplanes (like modern Internet "heroes" of entrepreneurship) - but by creating more pro-bono information work.

eggspurt··on What has Internet done to Media?
I think there's a difference between receiving basic compensation for the work put in -- and extracting excessive rents.

How much better could Internet be if it was easier for non-programmers and non-marketers to earn a living contributing to the Internet?

eggspurt··on What has Internet done to Media?
Government-funded systems tend towards a very mafia-like insider-crowd funding model - very far from an inclusive ideal.
eggspurt··on Track Your Code School Goals with Beeminder
I like your statistic about people not keeping up their resolutions: it's perhaps the best argument for using a tool. But how to formulate a realistic goal?
eggspurt··on Onboarding developers to your Rails app sucks
Nice! A sample project where a commit shows the changes you've made would make it easier for folks to follow in your steps.
eggspurt··on What Surveillance Valley knows about you
Malware that can hijack the users' cookies can do that, as described in https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6950758 at 15m40s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv6K2GqyijM#t=15m40)
eggspurt··on What Surveillance Valley knows about you
Hmm, would it would be possible to actually detect if Google's got information about a visitor - by creating a web page with google ads and then snooping what targeted ads are getting shown (which is possible through DOM traversal)? This way, information can leak.
eggspurt··on Google Acquires Boston Dynamics
Skynet is actually on Google's Master Plan http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/21468536/in/photostre...
eggspurt··on Google Acquires Boston Dynamics
Ben Horowitz: "Larry Page, in contrast, seems to have determined that Google is moving into war and he clearly intends to be a wartime CEO."

eggspurt··on Reform Government Surveillance
Snowden with NSA should be considered to be white hat hackers: they demonstrated the inadequacy of private information protection by Google and other companies https://medium.com/p/1bcff7c0f25f
eggspurt··on Commit to Keep Coding – GitHub + Beeminder
I want folks to commit to removing bugs!
eggspurt··on The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
Having seen animated gifs, I can assure you that mngs (pronounced as mings) would be likewise huge. It's better to just have a 1-line JS script do this, and a standard for sandboxing nonthreatening JS.
eggspurt··on The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
Honestly, I tuned out. Animations are procedural and are best represented with a scripting language - not with a declarative image format. Resource-constraining javascript within an (i)frame is probably a better way to spend a browser developer's time.
eggspurt··on The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
Finally a feature browsers can compete on! :)

eggspurt··on The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
The image quality improvements with JPEG2000 were mathematical but not really perceptual, see http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~jakulin/jpeg/artifacts.htm
eggspurt··on The PNG image file format is now more popular than GIF
At the PNG Group we designed the MNG format for animated images, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple-image_Network_Graphics
eggspurt··on Google Redefines Disruption: The “Less Than Free” Business Model
A lot of insight into Google's strategy regarding maps.
eggspurt··on Startup is not your job
How about new lifestyle business referring to themselves as new lifestyle businesses versus referring to themselves as startups? How should a startup call itself not to be ambiguous?
eggspurt··on Startup is not your job
There's a difference between a "startup" and a "lifestyle business".
eggspurt··on The undecidability of the halting problem is not very important
Probably worth calculating how many lifetimes of computer science students have been wasted on this inanity.
