And then there's New Yankee Workshop "and now let's go over to the xyz machine for <next-step>".

There are no ethical businesses. A lawn mower can give you a nicely manicured lawn or a trip to the ER. The lawn mower doesn't care.
earleybird··on Canada will reach 40M population by the end of this year
In IT, when ever I hear the phrase "we don't have the luxury of planning" I know with a high probability that the project will fail.
earleybird··on Neanderthal Flute
Then someone discovers you can add a reed. Et voila, the woodwind section appears :-)

Alternate ending: "suddenly jazz appears"

earleybird··on 'Mississippi miracle': Kids' reading scores have soared in Deep South states
Was that a Minecraft reference?
earleybird··on Why does it take so long to schedule a doctor's appointment in the US?
anecdata - E/Rs in my locale are 6 to 8 hour waits with total time spent with triage/nurse/physician totalling maybe 15 minutes (20 if they decide you need an x-ray). Since the queue seems to vary very little it just seems weird.

Due to this wait, I've been conditioned to treat it as a last resort. Perhaps that is the desired effect.

earleybird··on Solid, a spec that lets people store their data securely in decentralized Pods
Not for the folks north of you. I'd be happy with a form & a pencil but for the past year plus I've been told by the less than helpful dr office assistant to "Go to our website and make your appointment" which then makes me fill in various screening forms.

The trade off - clerk doesn't have to spend less than a minute looking up and giving me a time for my next appointment and I have to setup yet another id & password to use their crappy appointment/medical forms app in a cloud somewhere.

Until you find the devs take on why the SQL query is slow is a hallucination in the LLM sense.

And throwing snakes; not a reserve currency but apparently a useful talent.
earleybird··on Best printer 2023: just buy this Brother laser printer everyone has, it’s fine
+1 for CUPS/docker. I've been running a Brother 1018 (circa 2012) off a Raspberry PI 3 over the home network so everyone in the house can use it. It just keeps on ticking with the odd toner cartridge change.

earleybird··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
Absolutely this. 3-4x? Sibling of mine just had a minisplit installed where the unit was probably $4-$5k and the total was north of $24k.

A sealed water loop where any plumber and most DIYers could manage would be miles ahead in both reliability and accessibility.

earleybird··on Canada's tax revenue agency tries to ToS itself out of hacking liability
Personal experience, once received a notification from CRA to the effect: "6 months ago we refunded you incorrectly, you owe us, oh by the way we're also charging you a penalty for our mistake.". The amount was not inconsequential but not a problem to remedy. The insult was "we made a mistake and we are punishing you for it".
earleybird··on They say that gear doesn’t matter, but it does
Upvote for the chuckle while reading. Yes, we can very much have a blind spot from using whatever our current toolset is.
earleybird··on Show HN: Mathesar – open-source collaborative UI for Postgres databases
We need your help.
earleybird··on Argonne: Lithium-Air battery 1200 wh/kg, 1000 cycles
For context, a gallon of gas carries about 33.4 Kwh, a Cessna 172 has a fuel capacity of 56 gallons. Topped up at take-off it's carrying the equivalent of 1.87 Mwh. That will take you about 1,200 km.

I expect short range electric commuters will come first - similar to cars.

earleybird··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
My all time favourite[0]

I recall getting a recall notice from GM that included "until repaired, remove key from keychain".

earleybird··on Bing AI can't be trusted
Ah yes, imprecision in specification. Having worked with some Avalanche folks, they would speak of weather observations and weather forecasts. One of the interesting things about natural language is that we can be imprecise until it matters. The key is recognizing when it matters.
earleybird··on Microsoft Teams Premium: powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5
Great, now I have to read a bots meeting notes to confirm "that's what I meant".
earleybird··on Towards A Token-Free Future In NLP (2022)
I expect it is analogous to scannerless parsing - there's still a scanner, it just recognizes individual characters. It may be more about where you draw the line and how important it is to your understanding (or ability to convey the idea).
earleybird··on ChatGPT is not all you need. A SOTA Review of large Generative AI models
I believe it has an analogue with Heinlein's "there are two kinds of jokes; funny always and funny one time". Subsequent uses are a bit cringe in the same way that a subsequent telling of a funny-one-time joke is.
earleybird··on Heat pumps of the 1800s are becoming the technology of the future
In my locale, trades like plumbing (including gas & hvac), drywall, roofing etc range from 1 to 1.5 what contract developers from NTT, IBM et al are billed at. In absolute terms - 110 - 140 for contract devs and trades are often "to busy" at 170.
earleybird··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
You must be thinking of OnStar :-)
earleybird··on CATL's Sodium-Ion Battery
For comparison, a gallon of propane is equivalent to 27Kwh[0] so that 20 lb cylinder contains about 124 Kwh equivalent. Now that's not something I'd keep inside the house but it's not too far away.

earleybird··on Woodworking through the mind of an engineer
Here's Stefan Gotteswinter giving a talk about his Deckel G1L pantograph engraver.[0] For the side load on a 3D printer it probably would work fine but as others have mentioned, 3D printers are already relatively precise. 0.04mm/step on my ender 3 as I recall. (about 1.5 thou)
