dueprocess··on The Ocean Cleanup
It was gauche to drop a link there. My bad.
dueprocess··on The Ocean Cleanup
Some of the most important innovations and movements in history were 'very criticized'.

I'd say they were in good company.

On a quasi-related note, here's a project I'm launching soon. It's for innovators: http://diepenniless.com

dueprocess··on The Ocean Cleanup
Sorry, I upvoted you by accident. Can you clarify why requiring an email address is a showstopper for you?
dueprocess··on Stephanie L. Kwolek, Inventor of Kevlar, Is Dead at 90
Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber, wrote in his memoir, "Inventors are the children of misfortune and want."

Goodyear himself suffered unbelievable hardships during his life, even after making one of the greatest discoveries of the nineteenth century.

It's a good a time as ever to reveal "Die Penniless". It's a checklist / personal assessment system for creative geniuses who want to make history. For first access when it launches, please sign up here: http://diepenniless.com

dueprocess··on How we built our Real-time Analytics Platform
I stopped using MaxCDN since a website I took offline months earlier suddenly achieved "bandwidth overage" according to them, and my credit card was charged.

Recently, they advertised they now provide server logs to prove usage, but I'm done with them.

dueprocess··on Ask HN: How can I quit smoking?
"How do I quit smoking?"..."highlight of my day"..."helps me relax"...

Do you see what you're doing here? Smoking is at the center of your universe. There is NO WAY you will quit an addiction like smoking until you refuse to even acknowledge its existence.

Get rid of your thinking first, then you'll easily get rid of the addiction.

FYI: I smoked for 10 years before I quit. That was 10 years ago.

dueprocess··on This app says 'yo' and has raised $1 million
Good idea for an app. Think about it.

So taking the advice or instruction from someone smarter than you is a loss of personal freedom? Can you explain?
dueprocess··on [dead]
As I commented earlier, I ALWAYS give and I NEVER judge. I do this because I'm a Latter-Day Saint[1] and God explicitly spells out in the Book of Mormon[2] how we should respond in such a situation:

Succor those that stand in need of your succor; ye will administer of your substance unto him that standeth in need; and ye will not suffer that the beggar putteth up his petition to you in vain, and turn him out to perish.

Perhaps thou shalt say: The man has brought upon himself his misery; therefore I will stay my hand, and will not give unto him of my food, nor impart unto him of my substance that he may not suffer, for his punishments are just—

But I say unto you, O man, whosoever doeth this the same hath great cause to repent; and except he repenteth of that which he hath done he perisheth forever, and hath no interest in the kingdom of God.

For behold, are we not all beggars? Do we not all depend upon the same Being, even God, for all the substance which we have, for both food and raiment, and for gold, and for silver, and for all the riches which we have of every kind?

Book of Mormon, Mosiah 4: 16-19

dueprocess··on TaskRabbit is blowing up its business model and becoming the Uber for everything
It's the law of the startup though. Scale as big as you can, as fast as possible.
dueprocess··on Freelance Inbox
See also Freelance Funnel. It's very similar and has been around for a long time: http://freelancefunnel.com
dueprocess··on The Pivot
It doesn't sound like a psychology experiment Scott is talking about, but a "stumble-upon" strategy. Psychology is a little more elegant than just pivot, pivot, pivot.
dueprocess··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
You'll definitely want to check out Rejection Therapy: http://rejectiontherapy.com

dueprocess··on Banned TED Talk: Rupert Sheldrake – The Science Delusion
There's something to this argument, and I'm sympathetic towards it. I just wish Rupert had said it better.

Science is cruel and rife with incompetence and fraudulence, but the issue needs to be attacked with hard facts.

dueprocess··on IRS claims to have lost 2 years of Director's emails
The NSA will have a copy. Ask them.
dueprocess··on Earbits will be shutting down June 16th
Sad news. I liked the site, and discovered some good artists there.

They should be proud of what they accomplished. I'll bet they did a lot of good for indy music.

dueprocess··on $1,500 in Monthly Recurring Revenue Came From Hacker News
Please don't. This isn't high school.
dueprocess··on Show HN: Depot
Beautiful mobile site. The typesetting, colors, the way everything pops - just gorgeous.
dueprocess··on Amazon Prime Music
I use Deezer (a music subscription service) and I get serious usage out of it. Sure, I don't own music anymore, but that's because it seems so unnecessary.
dueprocess··on Yahoo locked me out of my email account
Something similar happened to me recently. A Yahoo / rocketmail account I had for over 10 years was suddenly closed. The reason was I hadn't used it for awhile (about six months or so).

The thing is I used to pay for the premium version of Yahoo mail, I bought domains from them, I had a paid Flickr account before - and they shut it all down without warning.

Losing that Flickr account hurt the most. Lots of saved images were lost.

dueprocess··on Lifetramp: Be someone else for a day
I'm working on a similar idea which I hope to launch in a week of so. It's not the same, but dang, it's in the ballpark.
dueprocess··on Ask HN: Free alternatives to ZOHO for custom emails
Yandex Mail. It's actually pretty good.
dueprocess··on Why I asked to be removed from the Techweek 100
In Genesis 2:18 God says He will make Adam an ezer kenegdo (Hebrew). In the context of subduing the earth (Gen 1:28) ezer kenegdo means "strategic ally". An equal to man in every way, ordained with the power to give life. Without the woman, human life could not exist.

The woman was God's final creation. One could convincingly argue He saved the best for last.

dueprocess··on Why I asked to be removed from the Techweek 100
These typical ads portrait women as play-things to be gawked at rather than someone's daughter, wife and another human being. And they are plain dumb.

But it's so prevalent nowadays that it hardly registers in a conscious way, and I think that's the problem.

As an LDS Christian I go to church and won't watch R rated movies, but even I feel like I've become numb to this kind of objectification of women. And I think it's a serious, serious problem in this society.

dueprocess··on Peek Inside a Professional Carding Shop
I haven't read much of Krebs before, but I will now. This piece was amazingly informative for me, and well written.
dueprocess··on This is Exactly How I Killed My Startup
Good read, and I totally relate. Especially not working in stealth mode advice. Wise words.

I got a laugh from the name Stack Fu, but I'm laughing with the OP, because I've picked less than optimal names myself.

dueprocess··on Ask HN: How much user validation is enough? When to build?
For me, it all depends on how big the project is. If it would be faster for me to build an MVP than get convincing user validation, I'll build it. The MVP can test my hypothesis.

But there are no easy answers. You could do user validation up the wazoo and still fail.

I suggest looking at other indicators (interest level, budget) or do a weighted pros and cons list.

dueprocess··on The psychology of Soylent and the prison of first-world food choices
Pointless meandering. Probably an easy stream-of-consciousness article to write, but there's nothing new here.

I read half of it and gave up.

dueprocess··on Edward Snowden responds to release of e-mail by U.S. officials
The fact Snowden had the conviction and courage to challenge the NSA on fundamental issues, both verbally and in writing, is remarkable.

This was Snowden's employer and the source of his income. Evidently, the preservation of civil liberties was more important to him.
