duck··on Framework Laptops now have 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports
Yeah, I now realize I was commenting on the wrong thing... but I was talking the expansion cards themselves. They're 8g. I'm totally fine with whatever the laptop costs to ship, but I'm not a fan of the Marketplace shipping fees.
duck··on Framework Laptops now have 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports
Does it really cost you $9 to ship one of these? It is probably Amazon's fault, but it just kills me to pay that much for shipping (although I'm fine w/ paying some reasonable amount for shipping).
duck··on A global house-price slump is coming?
Is there any data about downsizing? It almost seems impossible to do at some level (and I'm sure depending on the area) because of an extremely short supply of smaller houses these days. I could be wrong, but this seems like the last area to cut expenses on for most families.
duck··on Tell HN: Spammed by a Hacker News Enthusiast
Thanks - looking into that!
duck··on Tell HN: Spammed by a Hacker News Enthusiast
Thanks for the mention - that would be my project! I just hit 12 years of running it.
duck··on Ev Williams to step down from Medium
I would say it isn't a stretch at all to say most people feel that way. I stopped including any Medium hosted articles in my HN newsletter b/c of complaints from lots of subscribers that they couldn't read them.

I'll have to dig up my analysis I did last year (using BigQuery HN data), but on HN there are more Medium links than ever, but they tend not to get voted on at the same rate as older stories which tells me at least for the HN crowd it isn't worth clicking on them.

duck··on Dentistry is less scientific and more gratuitous than people think (2019)
It almost seems like tattooing "NOT THIS LEG" would be a safer move.
duck··on Show HN: Create awkward situations with a fake iMessage Popup
You probably don't have kids, but that isn't an autocorrect fail!

duck··on Ask HN: It's 2022. Where should I direct the youths to learn about programming?
Just to add to this great recommendation, https://p5js.org/ (JS port of Processing) is really great as they can get started right away and the docs are super simple. Dan uses it in most of his videos and really starts at a basic level, but works up to really complex concepts as well. My kids are younger, but they like the graphical part of it way more than me showing them the terminal and Ruby.
duck··on Show HN: Radiopaper – Troll-resistant public conversations
I found this exchange super helpful in understanding what Radiopaper is: https://radiopaper.com/conversation/K5opCylqOizaZ0HQCB5Q/ots...

This feels like something that would be hard to get traction with, but hats off on trying to do something different and thinking through what social could be. Also, love the design and UX - great stuff!

duck··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
> I have no idea why anyone would expect him specifically to be able to do it while no one else could

People said the exact same thing before Tesla and SpaceX.

duck··on How Zillow's homebuying scheme lost $881M
Are you saying AirBnB fixed all this? I don't see them renting much in late October nor passing out candy.
duck··on 200-foot-long railway to nowhere is a brilliant shipping loophole
Is there a video of them loading that truck onto the train? It seems like two ramps on both ends would make that easier and avoid what you pointed out.
duck··on Nerdle = Like Wordle but with Equations
I didn't think this would work... but then I solved it and now I think it could be fun. Looking forward to tomorrow's game!
duck··on Spotify’s CEO apologizes to employees over Joe Rogan controversy
A lot of people would find _any_ song by Eminem offensive.
duck··on Spotify’s CEO apologizes to employees over Joe Rogan controversy
> Spotify did not know what they would get with Rogan

I think this could be true and at the same time I think they might have even paid him more knowing what they know now.

duck··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
Not the OP, but it could be very well inflating the costs elsewhere as well so you wouldn't be able to see differences across platforms.
duck··on Citrix to be acquired for $16.5B, will be merged with Tibco
I interviewed at Citrix 20+ years ago for my first SWE job out of college. The first phone interview went well, but on the second one I was surprised to find the interviewer was asking the exact same questions, word for word. After a couple of them I mentioned it, thinking maybe this was a mistake and the interviewer said that wasn't the case, and then proceeded to ask me the rest of the same questions. After I told them the answer to the next question before they asked it there was a real long pause on their side and then they asked the remaining questions in a different order. Needless to say I wasn't as excited about working there after that, but they never called me back either.
duck··on Bridge collapse in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park
I think the other option is to just restrict the weight limit on these and change bus routes.
duck··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
I would say all that is subjective regarding what they specified as "build quality". I'll add my own take to it - I got mine early last month and haven't noticed any of those. That said, I do think the battery is the weak spot, but I think part of that is on the OS side (I'm running Pop!OS).

duck··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
Thanks for the information and details! Yeah, we're using blank poker cards now and just drawing on them for play testing and that has worked well. I'll check out Game Crafter as a next step as I want some nicer sets to send to friends to help play test.
duck··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
Looks like a fun game, I'll pass that on to some climber friends. Curious - where did you get the cards printed at? Working on a card game myself, but have been putting off researching that much after getting overwhelmed with options.
duck··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
In my 11th year doing Hacker Newsletter (https://hacker newsletter.com). Still enjoy putting it together each week and recently launched a daily version.
duck··on Show HN: I made a collaborative ASCII editor
Very cool, nice work!

duck··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
> Isabel Moreno told reporters he owned a 2006 Corvette and was trapped inside when the battery went out. Fortunately, he said eventually the battery started recharging itself enough to be able to roll the window down, and he was able to get out safely.

Curious how this is possible or was this just misreported?

duck··on F1: Mercedes appeals Verstappen's win, contest safety car procedure in last lap
I didn't know either, but I believe it is Out of the Loop sub-reddit which seems to be an interesting approach to unbiased discussions: https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/reqivo/what_i...
duck··on Ask HN: Is there a place on HN for interesting yet flame-war inducing topics?
Maybe one way around that would to be only allow users that with accounts created X+ months ago (and in good standing) to comment on those type of threads?
