duck··on Leaked VA memo calls for up to 83,000 layoffs to reduce workforce to 2019 levels
Looking at this the other day and found this helpful: https://www.pgpf.org/article/the-federal-government-has-borr...
duck··on Why kids need to take more risks: science reveal benefits of wild, free play
I worked with a Canadian about 10 years ago that broke his arm while visiting family in Winnipeg during Christmas. He waited 2 or maybe 3 full days to have it set and get a cast with no luck in seeing a doctor and finally drove across the border to have it done in the US. He was 60 or so and when he didn't even seem upset at that happening! That really opened my eyes on "free" healthcare.
duck··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
It made the news this evening: https://www.king5.com/article/tech/university-of-washington-...
duck··on Show HN: Factorio Blueprint Visualizer
Have you played Shapez? It is a simpler version of a factory game, but I really enjoy it and love the complexities of the shape stacking. It is on Steam or you can play for free here: https://dimava.github.io/shapez/modZ/
duck··on Things we learned about LLMs in 2024
Do you know who Simon is?

Still running https://hackernewsletter.com/ after 15 years and 60k+ subscribers. It has been hard to put a lot of focus on it the past couple years, but been finally getting some time to spend on some improvements there. Income here has always been simple sponsors which I'm very grateful for.

Could it be an iPod Touch?
duck··on Premature Graying of Hair: Review with Updates
+1 how is this even possible to do?
duck··on Wait Until 8th
I haven't really read the research, but yeah, I don't think texting is bad and as you mentioned, it really is helpful to keep connected with friends. The one thing we found though is texting didn't last too long as they moved on to different apps (like Snapchat). I hope your daughter and friends can resist that change and just stick with simpler things like texting and FaceTime.
duck··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
Except, I don't think wood would be any better as you still have to worry about how it was sourced and made to make sure nothing was added to it, right? I see a lot of people using bamboo for example. The only really safe alternative is stainless if you want to avoid thinking about it again.
duck··on Where Did Our 2024 Photos Go?
The title should of been 2004 - we have too many photos in 2024.
duck··on Visualizing Weather Forecasts Through Landscape Imagery
Your page is getting flagged for phishing on Chrome.
duck··on My Software Bookshelf
One I would recommend for anyone's bookshelf at any level because it is so good: https://natureofcode.com/
duck··on The Red Herring of Red Flags: Why Resumes Are a Relic of the Past
> They’re often polished, curated, and tailored to tick boxes rather than showcase genuine skills.

I look at a lot of resumes and would say most aren't well polished or curated. They often don't showcase skills either, but it is surprising how bad resumes still are today.

duck··on The loneliness of the low-ranking tennis player
Just to add, they have a really great archive site: https://classic.esquire.com/
duck··on Show HN: Talk to Me Human – my game about social persuasion
Looks interesting, but I would say a limited free demo is going to be key for any chance of adoption here.
duck··on One Knuckle Rice Rule
I think most people using this rule are using a standard rice cooker and they are all roughly the same size. The measurement is from where the rice is, not the bottom of the pot. In terms of the ratio, we use equal parts water and rice, plus one additional cup of water.
duck··on Tesla Cybertruck deliveries halted for 7 days
I can assure you that they weren't more cautious back then, but rather they just knew the dangers and accepted them.
duck··on Realtime telemetry from ISS internal components
I thought this was an interesting and very related read that touches on voting controls: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/20020039704/downloads/20...

duck··on A search engine in 80 lines of Python
You code just use an existing search engine and it would be 0 LOC, but I think you're missing the point. The focus wasn't on 80 LOC, but rather being able to talk through it in a short blog post.
duck··on Stories removed from the Hacker News Front Page, updated in real time
I hadn't see this before, but that is exactly what I've been wanting more of - thanks for setting that up John! I'm curious, do you feel like lower traffic communities like yours serves up the content mix you were hoping for when you started it?

My duckduckgo t-shirt has converted a lot of people over the last 13 years, but if it doesn't have the name that seems like a big miss!
duck··on Woman with rectifier and electric car (1912)
Most homes didn't have electricity at that time and wouldn't have it until the early 1930s.
