dualboot··on How Discord Won
It's a big factor. Discord is essentially a "better" iMessage for my immediate family.
dualboot··on How Discord Won
Discord wins in a lot of ways. A few that jump out to me as important are :

* Cross-Platform - You can reliably stay up-to-date on discord from basically every device you own with reliable notifications

* Excellent group voice chat quality and controls - Every user can control the volume for each chat participant(You control your own mix.) This is something Teams doesn't have and god I wish it did...

* It's Slack for friends. Discord basically does everything Slack does (rich-media real time chat with a specific group of contacts.) It's far easier to crank out a new discord for your friends and you don't get slammed with the "Free Organization" restrictions that come with Slack.

There are lots of things it does right, but these were major selling points for me.

dualboot··on Cloudflare and the Wayback Machine, joining forces for a more reliable Web
Cloudflare is really neat unless you find yourself mysteriously blacklisted by them as a user.

Then suddenly the web is a much smaller place.

dualboot··on 'Wild West' mentality lingers in modern populations of US mountain regions
>"headbutting of cultures that so many Americans on the coastal big cities just don't get or approve of, and love to condescendingly talk about that kind of personality as lesser or barbarous in some way."

This cultural divide has deep roots in the power struggle that was created when the people who settled the Appalachian's figured out that converting fields of corn into distilled bottles of whisky was far more profitable since it could travel infinitely farther without spoilage along the trade routes.

They were "dirt poor" prior to this because they could generate fresh produce that had a limited scope and value on the market.

That's when the war on stills began and there was a very thorough campaign of misinformation about how "dumb hillbillies" were going to blow themselves up/make everyone blind trying to operate a simple still.

It was really about the potential shift in economic power if that region was able to leverage vast lands for growing and creating highly profitable alcohol that could be sold across the country.

That campaign/lobby was so effective that it still resonates to this day.

dualboot··on Firecracker: Secure and fast microVMs for serverless computing
Intel has been an absolute security shit-show for over 3 years now.

The shift is underway but it takes time.

dualboot··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
It gives you an explicit thing to search for, though, or at least the ability to infer.

We deal in an absolute maelstrom of acronyms. Being explicit when using them for the first time in a document is part of the social contract.

dualboot··on Terminal V2 – Build, deploy, and host websites and apps on IPFS
I recommend spelling out/defining acronyms, at least the first time you use them.

Example :

"Terminal - the easiest way to build, deploy, and host websites & apps on IPFS."

Change to -

"Terminal - the easiest way to build, deploy, and host websites & apps on IPFS(InterPlanetary File System.)"

dualboot··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
The older I get, the more I realize that we really haven't figured out anything at all.

We just make up or prescribe to a set of rules that help us cope with that as best as possible.

dualboot··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
That's a very narrow view of the world, friend.

It's dangerous to presume that you have such a deep and wide perspective that you can instantly diagnose something so thoroughly.

dualboot··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
The other side of this is that a very large percentage of folks in our industry seem to have social anxiety-spectrum issues.

Folks without those don't seem to understand how much energy is being burned through just being out in the open and on display for all of your coworkers. It's not something I, personally, have control over.

The time I've spent in "open concept" work places, I finish every day frustrated with my ability to accomplish tasks and physically and emotionally drained.

That takes a very serious toll over time.

I've moved on from jobs due to this type of work environment.

dualboot··on Warcraft 3: Remastered Will Work with Old Custom Maps
This is a highly subjective opinion.

I played a considerable amount of 3D games on the cards listed prior to the Geforce256's release.

Hardware Transform and Lighting was nice but it wasn't as if the industry didn't exist prior to it's release.

dualboot··on Warcraft 3: Remastered Will Work with Old Custom Maps
I disagree.. There were quite a few gaming-focused graphics cards released during the development of Warcraft 3. - 1996 : 3DFX Voodoo(1) - 1997 : Nvidia Riva 128, ATI Rage Pro, 3DFX Voodoo Rush - 1998 : Nvidia Riva TNT, 3DFX Voodoo2, Banshee, S3 Savage 3D,Matrox G100/200/300, Intel i740, ATI Rage 128, Rage 128 Pro, Rage Fury Maxx - 1999 : Nvidia Riva TNT2/Pro/Ultra, S3 Savage 4/Pro/2000, Power VR, 3DFX Voodoo 3, Nvidia Geforce 256, Matrox G400 - 2000 : 3DFX Voodoo4, Voodoo4, Matrox G450, Nvidia GeForce2/MX/GTS/Ultra, ATI Radeon, etc

The sad reality is that the only folks who actually "suffer" from shame are those that have the capacity to see the world from a perspective other than their own.
dualboot··on Privacy not included: Holiday gift list for privacy and security
The most disturbing thing about the state of privacy is the households that purchase a multitude of devices that collect, link, and resell data about you.

As an example, Imagine the household that has multiple gmail accounts, multiple android phones, everyone uses google maps, Chrome on every desktop, google for search, they add a Nest thermostat, a few Dropcams, and for good measure they use 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4 for all of their DNS queries.

You can live in nearly the same world with Amazon and others.

Sigh.

dualboot··on The Many Ways Google Harvests Data
It's not just what they collect with a single service. It's the amount of clarity that comes from a linkage with their other collected data sets.

Google is a publicly traded company. The primary focus is always enhancing shareholder value.
dualboot··on ‘The Wire’ – Game Day
I see this all of the time. I don't understand?

During the final season McNulty flipped the script and began behaving in the same way that the city/department behaved.

It was purely to illustrate that if a human behaved the way that the Baltimore Police Department behaved you would view it as a self-destructive deranged person surrounded by a cast of enabling supporters with questionable morals.

I, personally, thought it was brilliant.

The problem is the response from the man himself. This could all have been resolved with the release of his financials and being open regarding his business dealings when he made the decision to step into the role of public servant.

dualboot··on ADHD Drugs Don't Boost Kids' Grades, Studies Find
The funny thing about drugs is that they don't effect every person in the same way. Any parent that would hand their kids medication and not do their very best to monitor how it impacts them is asking for trouble.

Glad you are able to function in life without the drugs. I've tried it. I was able to control the variables in my life somewhat to function for a reasonably long time but eventually I became overwhelmed and fell into a very deep pit of dysfunction.

They may not work for you but don't contribute to an already difficult stigma that makes it very difficult for those of us who have an actual need. It's hard enough to engage a doctor in this conversation given the "street value" of the drugs you're asking for.

dualboot··on ADHD Drugs Don't Boost Kids' Grades, Studies Find
This is one of the most succinct explanations of what my life was like before medication and after.

Thank you!
