dshanahan··on The Domain Market is a Mess
Cool little trick. Thx.
dshanahan··on Yahoo ends support of “Do Not Track”
This. The comments on the post are priceless too.
dshanahan··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
got a ballpark amount you'd sell for?
dshanahan··on Email, an idea so old that it's new
Really interested in your niche publishing - any blog posts or interviews about how it all got started? Would find that really fascinating. Thanks.
dshanahan··on Show HN: Sktchr – Balsamiq plugin for Sketch
I'd pay too. Loving sketch.
dshanahan··on Show HN: Sktchr – Balsamiq plugin for Sketch
Yeah, and very responsive team as well.
dshanahan··on Was Y Combinator Worth It?
I do know founders who've said as such. Wouldn't say it publicly, I'd imagine.

dshanahan··on Show HN: Product Hunt – Hacker News for Products
Love Telesc.pe. Used it at http://lighthouse.io as a first test app, been great.
dshanahan··on Show HN: Product Hunt – Hacker News for Products
The memory anchor is the product name though. I go back to PH often to find products I didn't have time to check out and to jump back into discussions, and the product name is the thing I'm looking for. I can find it in seconds, and I can also see how certain products have moved up the leaderboard in seconds. Sentences as the visual lead would greatly complicate that behavior, one I think is a primary one.

Said another way, the atomic unit is product names, which I actually think is more effective than the Show HN model. Some tagging/categories would really help overall, but I think this design actually helps beyond a cursory first-glance at the homepage.

dshanahan··on Show HN: A website aiming to fix homelessness in SF
I had a long coffee with HandUp's founder Rose Broome, who's done a boatload of legwork in this space (and just had Jason Calicanis ask to lead an investment round). Was intro'd to her product by a homeless guy in my hood and immediately had to know more. It's the first piece of tech that really wowed me with regards to making some headway on some of these issues - I'd highly encourage anyone who thinks about the space a lot to connect with her team. They're pretty responsive @handup on twitter.
dshanahan··on Show HN: Killed our 6-month old photo startup, and this came out of it
Agree here. I've looked at the site, read this comment, and gone back up to remind myself but I'm still not sure if it's gemba or gempa. And have zero association with that word.

dshanahan··on Why I won't do a startup and (probably) neither should you.
Good. Lots of people shouldn't do startups. I tell everyone I meet they shouldn't do a startup, because it's a crazy thing to do. It's not for everyone, and it's not for the faint of heart. If you respect me enough to ask me if you should do a startup, and I say no, because it's an insane thing to do and it's hard and scary and stressful and at times can be downright miserable, but then you go and start anyway, than you're probably built the right way to do a startup. If you don't scare away when someone who's done it tells you how scary it is, then you're probably fit for the challenge.

"...my lifestyle would not be improved by working more hours for less money at greater risk."

Boom. That's actually solid self-awareness and true of many people. That said, my life fundamentally shifted and my purpose became clear when I did exactly that.

dshanahan··on Show HN: People Food - $7 Office Lunches for Hungry Startups
just found a banh mi stand outside the SF Fed today ~$4 per sandwich. Was surprised, to say the least:)
dshanahan··on Show HN: I made an HN for mobile health
Nice work. I did same Telescope-mvpness at http://lighthouse.io for community builders - putting together a bookmarklet for link sharing and happy to share if I finish it.
dshanahan··on Ender’s Game is Already a Reality for the U.S. Military
Apparently your friends are nerdier than mine. I'm 34 and that post would be a spoiler alert to all of my friends. Somehow Ender's did reach a huge swatch of my generation.
dshanahan··on Startup Idea: Solve Personal Analytics
Ditto. I'd throw my email there.
dshanahan··on Silvrback is now open to everyone – high-quality, Markdown-powered blogging
Very much agree with this sentiment on principle. Alas, people seem to prefer avoiding any hassle and jumping on to closed platforms that make design and other bits simple. I'd imagine those that get traction eventually move towards a platform they fully control.
dshanahan··on [dead]
Love these quick ship stories. Congrats man. Would love to see code (just to learn, if nothing else, as I'm a hack who's trying to round out my understanding of Rails).
dshanahan··on How to Find Your Early Adopters: Getting to 1000+ Users
Fortunately there are those of us who love that part:) (minus the sleazy stuff)
dshanahan··on How to Find Your Early Adopters: Getting to 1000+ Users
I won't speak for Sandy, but Quibb's not (necessarily) built with the startup niche in mind. She knew the most likely people to try a work linksharing tool would be tech/startup workers, so she focused on the path of least resistance. As to how she found them and reached them, it was mining her network for a strong first group of users, and tons of emails, coffees, and follow up.

To me the useful lesson of Quibb's first 1k is that your earliest users may not look like exactly like your target market, but need to be the most likely to adopt and provide useful feedback. Especially in B2C, this is likely some subset of the tech early adopter archetype.

dshanahan··on Why You Should Stop Working at Noon Everyday
Interesting experiment - we implemented 90 minute sprints, 3x a day for our workdays at my first startup. Thinking was that as former soccer players, a 90 minute game was our peak performance; our bodies and minds were pretty conditioned to 90 minute stretches. It worked really well!
dshanahan··on Introducing Trello Gold
Yeah, drives me nuts there's zero reporting/analytics. Considering leaving Trello altogether because of this.
dshanahan··on Help me figure out how I lost this bet to an engineer
"didn't have anyone else in it" - seems no one else was in the photo with her.
dshanahan··on Help me figure out how I lost this bet to an engineer
This strikes me as odd, albeit a clue. You had a photo of a girl you'd presumably never met. A photo you'd taken, that you didn't know was her at first.

dshanahan··on Canada's Start-up Visa
I'm an American who started a startup in Vancouver, BC before this Visa existed. If anyone has any questions about doing that or would like suggestions/introductions to people in the area let me know.
dshanahan··on An Open Letter to Craig Newmark
I've spoken with him too, very recently. It's my impression he's still actively answering support emails for CL (as in daily). No?
