Russians were not interested in levelling civilian infrastructure, because they planed to use it for their own needs. Their plan was to capture territory, murder "nazi" (Ukrainians), and then steal everything valuable, like wheat, complex machinery, computers, phones, or even toilets.

2 nukes were enough for Japan. I bet for 4 to be sure.
drran··on Sabine: Cold Fusion is Back (there's just one problem)
Hint: cosmic muons are free, but they are available a) at higher altitudes, b) when sky is not shielded by upper floors. This may explain why some labs can reproduce LENR experiments, while other cannot.

Cheap long time storage methods, like "Sand battery"[0], can change the equation.

For Ukraine, it's better to confiscate NS as a compensation for the war, so it better to keep it off and intact, until it will be Ukrainian.
drran··on Open Source PC That Fits in Your Pocket
A detachable DOCK with keyboard, additional battery, 3 or 4 USB ports, Ethernet, HDMI, SD socket(s), headphones socket, etc., which can be attached to any smartphone via something like VESA mount for displays and TV-s. To use the keyboard, I prefer just slide it, to use like a notebook, out OR rotate it and the phone to form a cross, to use it like a portable gaming console.

This way, I can select a phone with good specs, then install LineAge with Linux terminal, and use the phone as a PC for development, note-taking, texting, etc.

drran··on Movim – A decentralized social platform built on XMPP
Usenet? Mail lists? They were active and very useful 20 years ago, until spam invented.
drran··on All poverty is energy poverty
Nuclear Winter can stop Global Warming with room to spare, so, maybe, Russians do the right thing when they are shelling Ukrainian nuclear power plant. Maybe, Ukrainian just need to return the fire.
drran··on All poverty is energy poverty
In Ukrainian: work - робота, labour - праця.
drran··on EV adoption in US is happening faster than predicted
They will freeze for a moment, then jump left, then right.
drran··on How to Terraform Mars for $10b in 10 years
Mars is cold enough for a superconductor, so just dig two wires around the Mars poles and power them. Mars equator will be almost habitable, like in Arctic.
drran··on How to Terraform Mars for $10b in 10 years
It's possible to live on floating platforms, because O2 is lighter than CO2. By capturing of sunlight (or strong winds), platform can generate a lot of energy to split CO2 into O2 and carbon, to keep platform flying forever, even with moderate leaks.
drran··on We don't know how the universe began, and we will never know
You just discovered the Big Bug theory.
drran··on Ushering out strlcpy()
Why you need 4 bytes of length when you have 4Kb of RAM? 1 byte should be enough for you.
drran··on Ushering out strlcpy()
If we define `String` type as `{size_t len, size_t offset, char *data}`, then we can store up to 23 bytes directly in the struct, if we will sacrifice 1 bit of `len` field to indicate that.

Now, compare a parallel version of both.
drran··on Ask HN: DALL-E was trained on watermarked stock images?
Product of machine cannot be copyrighted. Only humans have the right to copyright something. Dall-e like kaleidoscope then. Anybody, even monkey, can generate similarly looking images using Dall-e with the same prompt. So there is two options:

a) Dall-e images are without copyright.

b) Original authors of work used by Dall-e can claim copyright over images generated.

drran··on Ask HN: DALL-E was trained on watermarked stock images?
> My understanding of neural networks is that there are no remnants of the original inside it.

Can you prove that? I can prove the opposite.

drran··on If everyone bicycled like the Danes, we’d avoid a UK’s worth of emissions
Take the bath at home before the ride, so you will start smelling next day only. Use CoolMax-like underclothes, for better cooling when ridding, so you will sweat less and stay dry for a whole day. Use deodorants with anti-respiratory effect. And so on.
drran··on Coping with Copilot
Timelapse can be recorded online, just like a security camera with upload to cloud does, so it will be impossible to edit later. Cheating will be visible because of sudden changes in text of the program.
drran··on Coping with Copilot
When teachers require recording of timelapses, we will have AI which will be able to generate text and a video of a user typing it. IMHO, they should start to require timelapses right now.
drran··on The pervasive effects of C's malloc() and free() on C APIs
Just bump the stack pointer after call to function and use the allocated memory without risk of overwrite, like alloca() does.
drran··on The First Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Was Just Approved by US Regulators
The difference is that installation of solar panels without adhering to industry safety standards affects the individual, which makes the decision and profits from it, only. In case of nuclear and coal, consequences are shifted from the individuals, which make decisions and profits from them, to completely innocent people.

It's written in clear text about this responsibility shifting in the comment, but you continue to do that responsibility shifting.

I'm affected by Chornobyl, my parents are affected by Choronobyl, my brothers are affected by Chornobyl, my children are affected by Chornobyl, while we have zero profit from nuclear energy, and nobody asked our consent when the nuclear station was constructed. Moreover, our then government (Moscow) tried to hide all facts about tragedy, while our current government postponing research about cancer induced by Chornobyl radioactive pollution, so people like you can continue to claim that only few people killed by Chornobyl while thousands die every year due to increased levels of cancer.

drran··on Roboticists discover alternative physics
> To put it plainly, neural nets can't come up with scientific theories, but they can estimate probabilities of things happening. But scientists can and want to come up with scientific theories, not just predictions.

Current science is famous for "shut up and calculate" principle.

- Foo, bar, baz, ...

- But why?

- Shut up and calculate!

drran··on I miss the programmable web (2021)
IMHO, we need a browser optimized for power or professional user experience (PPUX), instead of browsers optimized for dumb users (DUX).
