drewchew··on The Adolescence of Technology
I wish he would have used AI to make the essay shorter…
drewchew··on Tao Te Ching – Translated by Ursula K. Le Guin
Had to share the creation of Ea from the Earthsea cycle… very Tao…

“Only in silence the word, Only in dark the light, Only in dying life: Bright the hawk’s flight On the empty sky.

“The Creation of Éa,” Ursula K. Le Guin

drewchew··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Definitely grateful to have this site and appreciative of the people that make it what it is. I check in multiple times a day and always find something new (or at least new to me), interesting and frequently useful!
drewchew··on iPhone Pocket
Y'all remember iPod Socks?
drewchew··on EPA tells some scientists to stop publishing studies
lol...
drewchew··on Resurrect the Old Web
The old web was great but it broke society in a different way and formed the basis of social media's current problems. Writing about your situation and expecting other people to desire to know you so much that they go out of their way to learn about you is not a substitute for 1-1 or 1-group interaction that formed the basis of human culture for centuries. If you want to do something revolutionary to start restoring a healthy society, once a day, call (or DM or text) someone from your contacts list and say "I saw something today that made me think of you, so I wanted to see how you're doing. What's new in your life?"

drewchew··on Web apps in a single, portable, self-updating, vanilla HTML file
This looks super cool and I'm hyped to try it. Reminds me of Decker https://www.beyondloom.com/decker/index.html which I saw on hacker news ~18 months ago, similar ethos but this seems like it will be more applicable to daily use cases.
drewchew··on If the moon were only 1 pixel: A tediously accurate solar system model (2014)
I've probably thought about this website daily or weekly since it originally came out. Glad to know it still exists.
drewchew··on Writing as Transformation
Coming across stuff like this is why I value the hacker news community.
drewchew··on Lenovo Officially Announces the Legion Go S Handheld with SteamOS
I wonder how long til we can run steamOS via emulation on an iPhone...
drewchew··on Robot dentist performs first human procedure
The scent would be wafting directly into your nostrils if you were facedown, so... you got that going for you I guess?
drewchew··on Robot dentist performs first human procedure
That's exactly what I was thinking, you can lay face down on a massage bed for a pretty long time, so they should just be able to put the robot in your mouth through the face hole lol
drewchew··on Robot dentist performs first human procedure
Will robot dentists facilitate the option to lay face down for procedures so that the debris and saliva falls out instead of needing the suction tool?
drewchew··on Show HN: I made an open-source minimal blogging platform
Sounds cool, thanks for explaining! Looking forward to trying it out :)
drewchew··on Show HN: I made an open-source minimal blogging platform
Could you compare and contrast to BearBlog and Mataroa? Also does the paid plan include some specific capacity for image hosting?
drewchew··on Animated pavilion made of cardboard and powered by sand
Came across this and instantly fell in love. Reminds me of Ray and Charles Eames Solar Do-Nothing Machine.
drewchew··on It's okay to make something nobody wants
Glad to be the bearer of fun news :)
drewchew··on Unidentified anomalous phenomena – Independent study team report [pdf]
"To whom it may concern:

Aliens? Maybe...

Plz fund global surveillance and AI?

Thx"

drewchew··on The fear of a nuclear fire that would consume Earth
I thought hacker news was anti-clickbait?
drewchew··on The fear of a nuclear fire that would consume Earth
Title should be "Scientists used to be afraid that a nuclear fire would consume the earth but don't panic..."
drewchew··on Texas just got closer to blackouts than it has since 2021. What happened?
I kind of wonder why there has been so much push for consumer solar / battery over neighborhood solar / battery projects. At least in Texas, there is so much empty land, it seems like it would be more effective to 'imminent domain' some land or leverage existing right-of-ways for solar array + battery storage, rather than putting the burden on individual homeowners to purchase what is effectively community infrastructure (if we were allowed to sell power back to the grid).
drewchew··on Texas just got closer to blackouts than it has since 2021. What happened?
Ranked choice voting seems like the only plausible way to introduce nuance into the ballots...
drewchew··on Texas just got closer to blackouts than it has since 2021. What happened?
I think the root cause may be a retail market for something that should be a public utility?
drewchew··on Texas just got closer to blackouts than it has since 2021. What happened?
Would it help if the state were to provide tax incentives for in home battery backups?
drewchew··on Animated Knots
Midshipman's hitch is under-appreciated - my 2 cents!
drewchew··on Animated Knots
"Eighteen inches of paracord is an infinitely better object to fidget with than any 10$ trinket you'll ever get at a store..." the old man shouted, angrily shaking his fist at modernity in general.
drewchew··on Animated Knots
The one app I've ever bought besides games.
drewchew··on Thoughts on the Apple Vision Pro, spacial computing and new layers of reality
Just some things I've been thinking about for a long time that finally catalyzed after the Vision Pro announcement.
drewchew··on Ahead of Time: On Poetry and Mourning
The potential to get wrecked by something like this on a Sunday morning in the midst of things like "google maps is broken" and "check out this cool thing I made" is what makes hacker news a special place.
