drannex··on Jensen Huang says AI distillation is 'competition.'
Using a competitors hammer to make your own hammer is a very valid approach. That's just "free-market" capitalism for you.
drannex··on iPhone Duo
Screen size would have always been big, absent production costs and marketing price. Over time display tech just got better and cheaper to finally do it.
drannex··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Echo chamber strikes again, because I see none of that, just love for knowledge, history, and science.
drannex··on Accidental Aesthetics and Romance of Power Wires
Kind of shocked there's not any mention about tumblr in the article, there is an entire community of people who adore powerlines, get tattoos, talk about their aesthetic values, it's an entire subculture that I love following.
drannex··on Qwen 3.8-Flash-Next releasing tomorrow (125B a6B)
To be fair, Alibaba IS a tech giant, one of the biggest in fact.

They are just giving sleepless nights to the western tech giants.

drannex··on Mojo is now open source
Interesting, I found the Rust code _far_ more readable.
drannex··on A Preview of DuckDB v2.0
I don't really get an AI smell on this, in fact I see multiple parts that an AI would have corrected - grammatical issues, personal writing quirks, etc.

Writing similar to this: is quite a normal way of writing for technical articles - especially when you are trying to make the point clear and well organized.

drannex··on A Preview of DuckDB v2.0
Really looking forward to that new Async system, especially when reading/querying against thousands of parquet files. This is going to monumentally affect me and my work - I have to query against millions of massive parquet files and the speed has already been rather wonderful, but if those metrics are to be even 100% in range, this is going to make life so much better.

DuckDB is seriously an incredible utility.

drannex··on Chicken Scheme 6.0
Racket may be significant faster than many, esp since transitioning to Chez, but its still very hard/problematic to compile to a binary, and if wrapped into a binary still very bloated in size.

FWIW: I enjoy working with Gambit, especially since it can compile to C and standalone binaries and also scores even higher than Racket.

drannex··on I finally did it, I forked WordPress
I read through the page, and thought it was precisely what it needed. It very adequately described its usage, differences, and it's key points.

This isn't a blog post, this is a homepage, and as a homepage it is selling its idea to its specific audience, which is developers who use WordPress as a CMS and deplore the rest of the tedious stack. Even if it's AI generated, its obviously been human-edited rather well.

OP, I thought it was well-done, great work, makes sense, I'll have to dig through the changes to see if its worthwhile, but I love the concept and limited attack vector size (a lot of WP security bugs are from their parsers and server-side rendering).

drannex··on Grok uploaded my user directory to xAI's servers
This is wonderful - might even be exactly what one of my projects needs to use as a dependency.

In the README it mentions that it puts the dev environment in a filesystem jail, but how are you able to use your hosts bins without leaking access to the rest of the system? Or is that just an assumed liability?

drannex··on Punk, or why I don't stream anymore
> I think the issue here is that you might be confusing people who can stand up for themselves, don’t bullshit, and don’t like to put up with bullshit with assholes.

You are correct - looks like we had two alternative definitions, we agree with each other here! I categorize your definition of assholes as 'dicks', that makes sense.

drannex··on Punk, or why I don't stream anymore
> So you want to employ unreformed murderers, psychopaths, rapists etc. Or do you have a line somewhere?

Key phrase in the quote was 'until they fix themselves', reformation by other means, particularly therapy (prisons are not therapy, and incredibly inefficient, which is why they have such a high recidivism rate). So, sure, we should employ *reformed* murderers, psychopaths, etc. As long as they have had adequate therapy and confirmed reformation. Of course, on a tight leash, but nonetheless, yes.

Plus, just being an asshole doesn't mean someone can't be reasoned with, sometimes you need an asshole or two on the team to get shit done. The ability to stand your ground with a considerable weapon of knowledge on your back is not asshole behavior, that's just knowing your shit.

I wouldn't hire anyone if they weren't brilliant. I would and do hire knowledgeable assholes, because they tend to know their shit so well that its all they know. That's why I hire them.

drannex··on Star Just Ate a Planet, and It's Not Done Yet
important part: "and a device to create terran life".

@WalterBright, I've always preferred the idea that to explore the stars the only chance we have at doing so is by bio-growing humans (cloned?), and somehow uploading and downloading a current humans consciousness into the form.

basically 'seeding the universe' since we would just start sending little seeds of human life everywhere. :-)

The thing is though is that he is a ridiculously good programmer, and accomplishes more on his own than most programmers do with a team, he is insanely good.

Does this mean everything he does or says is right? absolutely not, sometimes its myopic and tunnel-vision induced with a smidgen of good points hidden within. Does he come across as 'off' to some people? a slight god-complex? is he likely hardcore autistic and miss practically all social niceties? absolutely, obviously unverifiable, true.

He should have gone into Academia (not that he would have excelled at the 'school' side of it), and he still could, because I am sure in the future he will be an excellent eccentric and transformative professor or researcher, if he wasn't so caught up in the rat-race libertarian capitalistic technology scene.

With all that said, even though we align on many things here, I don't think he or myself could stand being in a room with each other for anything more than a few minutes.

drannex··on A road to Lisp: Why Lisp
If there is any language that has ever been, Python is the very definition of light side, so much so that anything that needs to be done in the cover of night, is purposefully directed elsewhere by rather shady dark siders (C).
drannex··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement

drannex··on The Cypherpunk Library
This is incredible - wish I could have been there! Thank you for taking photos of the event!
drannex··on The Cypherpunk Library
This is a very pretty layout and all, but the site itself needs more of a mission statement, to stand for something other than a dozen or two direct sources. Perhaps it can grow (and it should!)

But, if anyone here is serious about this, and our hacker histories, please see the Cyberpunk Project Library, which features much more articles on all of this and then some: http://project.cyberpunk.ru/idb/ ("Last updated somewhen on 1998")

There is another site that was built around the same time (92-2003?), that tracked privacy and other cypher/cyberpunk writings on a much larger scale (and other Extropian) writings, particularly by ~sasha (RIP), but I am unable to find it in my links right now.

Perhaps its time to rebuild and expand, and the Cypherpunk Library could be the place.

drannex··on The Cypherpunk Library
Certainly interested - are they shared anywhere?
drannex··on Tech billionaires are spending unprecedented sums in California races
I've been telling people a lot lately, that out of the entire planet, America is the oldest government in the world now. Russia, China, Japan, UK, all of them are far newer than the US. We're out of date.
drannex··on Tech billionaires are spending unprecedented sums in California races
We're going to keep seeing this "unprecedented spending" until we make Citizens United illegal again. Corporations (& the rich) should not be able to buy elections directly, or indirectly. Corporations are not people.
drannex··on Restore full BambuNetwork support for Bambu Lab printers
Just letting you know, you replied to an LLM account.
drannex··on Tailscale Peer Relays is now generally available
Oh man, I even read all the comments and still couldn't find it when I finally clicked on the image link. Terrible UX.

cc: @apenwarr (tailscale founder), might want to have someone fix this and move the close button to the top right of the modal, not the bottom right.

drannex··on Tailscale Peer Relays is now generally available
This is a more all-included and resilient system, especially for logging, than just opening a VPN port. I do a lot of corporate installs, and if we had a system like Tailscale then I would be in heaven. The amount of user-created systems are heinous in regards to security, and hard to setup and keep running. Tailscale lets you setup quickly, and reliably with minimal errors OOTB.

If you feel that tailscale will fold, or the free plan will be future limited, then you can drop in headscale which is a near 1:1 API open source tailscale central server.

If you always want to be open source and not rely on API changes or staying up to green on the headscale development (made by a third party), then you can set up netbird, which is both hosted (for free) as an alternative to Tailscale more tailored for developers, but they also open-sourced their entire stack, so you can always leave and use that on your own servers.

drannex··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
Latency, FPS, efficiency. The LSPs while beefy, are not part of the overall efficiency and are used as sub processes, so if they fail or are sluggish, they won't affect how the editor runs, if you don't want to use LSPs, then you can go ahead and disable those.

Zed is one of the few editors, that like Sublime, are really focused on efficiency, using minimal resources (when needed) and the latency and FPS of the editor is bounds better than VS Code. It just works, better.

drannex··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
> Last time I used zed for go development it spawned nodejs servers (downloaded without asking for permission!) for god knows what.

LSPs, they are snagging the LSPs made by other developers for languages you are using. if you install any LSP or language support in VSCode its running the same thing. It only installs when you are using a language that has default support such as Rust, Python (which I believe uses a Node.js LSP), Go (same as Python), etc.

drannex··on Lightpanda migrate DOM implementation to Zig
Ladybird is in the process of switching over to Swift, and has been for a little over a year now.

Not linking to the pedophilic nazi-site, and as Nitter is dead-ish, here is the full-text announcement archived on tildes: https://tildes.net/~comp/1j7m/ladybird_chooses_swift_as_its_...

drannex··on Play Aardwolf MUD
Still logging in on occasion in Midnight Sun, I am on the younger side (breaching my thirties soon) and my mother played introduced me at a very young age to play alongside her and to help guide and teach the game (and spelling, and critical thinking, and the digital world) that she had played years before I was born. Many of her longest friends that she still talks with daily she met through MS2 and the various other MUDs such as Aardwolf.

MUDs are truly wonderful, and I hope they have a resurgence in some form soon.
