Bitcoin != DeFi. If you don't know that, why even comment?
dot1x··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
Update:

Managed to make it work. I usually don't put the mask over my nose as, having glasses, makes them all foggy and I can't see anything (protip: I don't care about how effective that is, the mask for me is just the minimum to confirm to current regulations).

Seems that faceID is really anal about the mask being OVER the nose before it's recognized as a mask! This is why it wouldn't work before.

So if you're having problems, be sure to wear a mask as apple expect you to.

dot1x··on iOS 14.5 delivers Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch, new privacy controls, and more
This doesn't work for me at all. Have Watch Series 5, Iphone 12 MAX. Option is enabled, tried rebooting both devices, tried enabling/disabling it.

It's not like it fails, it literally never even tries to use the watch, goes directly to normal faceid.

Gone are the times when apple software would just work...

dot1x··on Ask HN: Earning 100k EUR in Berlin?
I make 140k as a network automation Engineer for a company in Ireland (though main office is in US).

It's possible.

dot1x··on Dropbox Passwords: Store and sync passwords across all devices
Beyond Dropbox Passwords, for which I care yes and no, they are finally introducing a Dropbox Backup solution AND a dropbox family plan! Finally :)
dot1x··on Ask HN: How to prosper under negative interest rates?
CTRL+F and nobody mentioned Austrian Economics, the Mises Institute, gold, bitcoin, sound/hard money... wow. People are really delusional and still completely under the thumb of Keynes' wrong economic "policies".

Wake up people. Coronavirus or not, the world has been in a state of decay since after WWI and it snowballed in the 70's when the last of the gold standard was severed.

People advising that 2/3 % inflation is "not only not bad, but a sign that the economy is doing great" have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

For those who are a minimum curious, I really advise you to read two fenomenal books

- What has government done to our money? - Rothbard, Murray N.

- Democracy: The God that failed - Hans-Hermann Hoppe

To the OP: government's great plan is to eliminate cash or render cash useless. Everything will more to digital cash where they can effectively do negative interest rates. What can you do to protect yourself? Put most of your money in Bitcoin and Gold. These are the only hard money in existence.

dot1x··on Show HN: Discreet dead man's switch for victims of domestic abuse
So in short, the answer is "no".

I don't see why anybody would ever use your unsecure service or even pay for it.

dot1x··on Show HN: Discreet dead man's switch for victims of domestic abuse
My problem with any "Dead man switch" is the fact that none of these services seem to survive.

Also, can you please write somewhere on the website what's your privacy policy? Is everything encrypted? if so, with what?

By it's nature this kind of service will hold very sensitive information.

dot1x··on Using Anki to remember what you read
Hi ruby / vim / bash repo says otherwise (in terms of knowledge... whether or not he needs it is up for debate)
dot1x··on Using Anki to remember what you read
Too bad SM is Windows-only and desktop-only. The beauty of Anki is that you can review anywhere.
dot1x··on Ask HN: What are some deep, mentality changing books?
Mind providing some non-biased links? Every controversial book has been somehow "debunked" all the time... :)
dot1x··on What is and how to start with Decentralized Finance (DeFi)
I've been earning interest on my DAI quite nicely. The only thing that concerns me since the bZx fiasco is... how attack-proof are all these smart contracts? At times it feels like putting your money in a house of cards.

We need better insurance in the crypto space. Nexus is fine but it doesn't cover everything and you could still be denied as it's not trust-less.

dot1x··on Ask HN: Have you observed any Covid-19 related panic buying yet?
* Location: Ireland, Dublin

* Area type (urban, suburban, countryside, very rural) -- Urban

* Shop type (bulk, megastore, supermarket, retail park, medium / small) -- Any

* Water supply - high

* Food supply - high

* Sanitary supply - low

In Dublin the only thing missing is hand sanitizer. I had to navigate 5-6 pharmacies until I found one offering "hospital grade" hand sanitizer, sold at 16 EUR per 500ml (expensive AF).

LIDL, Tesco, Aldi are all well stocked with no problems finding anything.

dot1x··on Early riser or night owl? New study may help to explain the difference
For those interested, Internal Time [1] does a good job at explaining chronotypes.

People that say they "changed from night owl to early riser" (or vice-versa) have never been night owls in the first place, but something else was the cause (diet, screen time, etc).

Chronotypes are genetics-based so no amount of wishful thinking will make you a night owl or an early riser (though obviously you can try and force this with alarm clocks / melatonin... to your own risk).

Another book worth mentioning is Why we sleep by Walker. It has it's flaws but overall does a good job at explaining the importance of sleep.

It has no addons. Also, its algorithm seem very... crude.
dot1x··on Welcome to the Era of Fake Products
Easy: stop shopping on amazon. It's a cesspool.

1. Buy local 2. If buying online, buy directly from the seller's own website and not via Amazon.

dot1x··on How to Take Smart Notes
nvALT fits the bill, as does "Archiver"
dot1x··on How to Take Smart Notes
That's no coincidence. The book on which this article is based on is _exactly_ the same (I read it). There are maybe a couple of ideas in the entire 200 pages book and it just runs in circles.
dot1x··on Reasons not to become famous

dot1x··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
To add to this, the author mentions multiple times that tone of voice is extremely important when using this technique. A demanding tone of voice will only backfire. Ask that question in a relaxed, non-demanding, joyful voice.
dot1x··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
Exactly. If someone calls your bluff, you should be able to back it up.
dot1x··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
The author addresses this point. Giving a single number may indeed be "harsh" in some occasions. His suggestion is to instead use a range, which makes you seem more reasonable and won't put the other person on the defensive. I actually did use a range, forgot to mention that in my original comment.

For example, you can phrase it as "At top places like $ExampleOne, $ExampleTwo, people in my position earn between $X+80%, X+100%". You then go from there. You can also lower the start of the range or increase the end of the range, make that gap wider. Every employer will go to the initial range given and try to bring you down on it because of "excuses". you are allowed to go down up to 3 times by 10-15%, with the "say no without saying no" technique. At the end, you give the non-round number (e.g 134,567$ per year) which gives the impression you put some thought into it.

Another thing he mentioned is that money is not everything. Ask for more days or perks. If they can't meet you on those they might instead bump your salary.

It's also about putting in a bit of theatrics. For example, when I gave my final number for my salary I paused and said "give me a moment" and scribbled something on a piece of paper. After that I said my non-round number. It worked.

No technique is fool-proof. All it takes though is for it to work most of the time.

dot1x··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
I got the highest job-hopping % increase in salary by following the advice of this book. Using tactics such as "Saying no without saying no" and "Start with your number $X+80%, then say no without saying no each time going down by 15-20% in 3 steps. At the last step, give a non-round number that seems to be your lowest threshold".

The book has further gems like

- Deadlines cut both ways. Never hide your deadline, as it will increase the chance of an impasse: the opponent will hold out for more while you will be pressured by the unspoken deadline.

- Never bluff. Be prepared to actually walk away from the table at any given time.

- If the other party thinks lowly of you, bring forth their worst fears. This allows them to see them through the glasses of logic instead of emotions. Once you diffuse their feelings in the open, they'll be more receptive to what you have to say.

The book is worth a read.

dot1x··on Hard negotiations: why a softer approach yields better outcomes
My approach to negotiations is described in the book "Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss.
