donpott··on Rumors of my death are slightly exaggerated
That was a Cliff-hanger!
donpott··on How we built Bluey’s world
The primary source cited in TFA was itself submitted to HN some months ago and garnered 100+ comments, for your reference: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43816546
donpott··on Show HN: Ten years of running every day, visualized
It is quite clever. My own rule of thumb is "add half of the amount in miles, then 10% of the (original) amount in miles". What's interesting is that it happens to be just as precise as the method shown above (ie. 1.6 v 1.609 v 1.618 )
donpott··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster

donpott··on Apple responds after being forced to approve porn app on EU iPhones due to DMA

donpott··on What’s new with Robinhood, our in-house load balancing service
I think it's quite easy to confuse the two if one is diagonally reading the HN frontpage and sees a headline that begins with "What's new with Robinhood [...]".
donpott··on Ask HN: Should you reply STOP to unwanted texts?
Just want to add that 7726 works in the UK too.
donpott··on Wreck of Shackleton's 'Endurance' discovered in Antarctic depths (2022)
I loved that one. For some reason the bit that stuck with me the most was the inside joke they had about all penguins knowing Robert Clark, because they seemed to be calling his surname all the time.
donpott··on "Cheated" Contactless Passengers Fined [at London Stansted Express] [video]
It has become part of everyday life in the capital to use your card or phone to tap in to travel on the transport network. But ITV News has uncovered an operation that penalises people who do just that to travel to London Stansted Airport. Despite having contactless payment systems activated on the gates of the Stansted Express, thousands who don't have a physical ticket are being given large fines of up to a hundred pounds. The travel watchdog has questioned how Stansted can be the only airport in our region that doesn't allow ticketless travel. Passengers who didn't spot warning signs before their trip have described it as a money-making scheme.

Indeed, they were on the brink of extinction until the worldwide outlawing of DDT, and have had a huge boom since.

> sometimes claimed

Here, Wikipedia is faithfully recording that some people make that claim. It’s not saying that there’s a consensus or endorsing any claim or its contrary.

donpott··on Ask HN: Underrated music, books, movies?
Seconded (no pun intended)
donpott··on Ask HN: Is the Market Recovering?
It’s a phenomenon I’ve seen referred to as the “dead cat bounce”. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_cat_bounce

donpott··on Can Italians Understand Latin?
Seems to be a homophone of "Oui <BLANK> j'ai vu" -> Yes <BLANK> I've seen [it].

Anyone has an insight on what "ptdr" might mean?

donpott··on The inner life of the octopus (2022)
I came to say this, excellent book. And to add to user rob74's comment in this thread: If memory serves, in the book, one of the procedures to uplift the species was to lengthen their lifespan artificially so octopi could enter some "teaching feedback loops".
donpott··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you got on any aspect of life?
Wow, this one's amazing, and so well argumented that it finally made it click in many respects for me.
donpott··on Read RSS Feeds on Mastodon
This can be combined with Nitter's RSS feed of a (public) Twitter account to work around the lack of network effect in Mastodon compared to Twitter.

IME ephemetoot is no longer required, as Mastodon servers (or at least the one I'm using) now offer the feature to auto-delete older toots natively.

donpott··on Thanks Dang, Happy Holidays
All of my interactions with dang have been extremely positive. He is one of the main reasons why HN is the community it is. Thank you for all you do and happy holidays!!!
donpott··on Ask HN: Alternatives to The Economist?
Maybe Foreign Policy? Can't say I've read any issues in the past few years, but back when I last read it, it appeared to fit your requisites reasonably well (perhaps a bit too US-centric for your liking).

This chart shows FP as a more factual, slightly closer to the Center than The Economist (EDIT: Wrong)

https://www.datawrapper.de/_/rrzFK/

Source for the chart: https://www.thefactual.com/blog/is-foreign-policy-magazine-r...

EDIT: I misunderstood the chart. It shows FP as more factual and slightly more opinionated than The Economist, while labelling both as "Center" (without relative comparisons) ideologically.

donpott··on Classic SE Mistakes (1996)
I parsed "Classic SE" as "The first version of iPhone SE"
donpott··on Ask HN: What Is Happening in the UK?
Thanks for the clarification, now I understand your point.
donpott··on Ask HN: What Is Happening in the UK?
Making GBP 150,000 before tax in the year 2019-2020 would put a person in the 98th percentile of salaries in the UK. If that's not rich, I don't know what is, in London or anywhere.

donpott··on Ask HN: Apple dropping support for iPhone SE. What to do now?
I'm in the same situation. My plan is to get a 13 Mini, and hope that it also lasts me enough years for Apple to release another small-factor iPhone.
donpott··on Ask HN: What happened to theregister.com?
That's a fair point. I'm finding the thread interesting because it has helped divorce my personal experience from (some of) the english-speaking tech community at large.

For me, a theme that's arising is that the previous style was pretty polarising, but at the same time it was a differentiator. Now, it's neither of those.

It appears that this works better for them commercially, too; so more power to them.

donpott··on Ask HN: What happened to theregister.com?
OP here. I think it's an apt metaphor. To expand/clarify, I would say that the spiciness of the curry was at the same time hard work (ie. having to parse the headlines, for example) and the main reason I went to this restaurant (it made it unique, it was a differentiator). I would visit it occasionally for a treat (or whenever a big event happened in Tech, although I'm mixing my metaphors now), but not as something one does every day.
donpott··on Ask HN: What happened to theregister.com?
Hi Chris,

OP here. Just wanted to say thanks a million for taking he time and sharing your insightful reply. I don't have any original/interesting points to make, so I'll let the other commenters follow-up.

donpott··on Ask HN: What happened to theregister.com?
Do you mean that the "old" style didn't make it commercially viable, and the "new" one does?

I would disagree. At least before I would visit it intermittently whenever I remembered it existed. Now I have zero interest in ever visiting it again.
