donkey-hotei··on Man used Coinbase to pay hitman in Bitcoin for wife's murder, FBI says
He should not have hired a hit man to murder his wife also.
donkey-hotei··on Smart contracts on Bitcoin
I agree it's hard, outside of finance, to find interesting use cases. One use case that I personally enjoy was the use of smart contracts to enable the building of decentralized ISPs[0].

donkey-hotei··on Peter Norvig's “pytudes” for Advent of Code 2020
Norvig teaches a really cool, and challenging, class on Udacity called the "Design of Computer Programs"[0] in Python where you can learn his thought process on how to write reliable and beautiful software to solve interesting problems.

donkey-hotei··on Ask HN: What are the best advanced computer science courses online?
If you're interested in low-level systems concepts and learning how to write exploits: I highly recommend Modern Binary Exploitation by RPISEC.

donkey-hotei··on Zuckerberg defends not suspending ex-Trump aide Bannon from Facebook: recording
The cries for large tech corporations to moderate their content in ways that would make them something like thought-police has always baffled me. Though I understand that it is unhealthy for society to give a platform for violent right-wing rhetoric as well. Was Bannon's comment hyperbolic or not? Did they ever come out and say so or did they double down on it?
donkey-hotei··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
Yes.
donkey-hotei··on De Bruijn Sequences (2011) [video]
I watched the video hoping to learn how to finally pronounce "de bruijin"
donkey-hotei··on Is Cyberpunk Dead? A Conversation with Bruce Bethke
Kill Cyberpunk. Long Live Solarpunk
donkey-hotei··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
I work there. If "shadow profile" means a profile that's created from PII for a specific person that doesn't have an account on the site, fb doesn't create shadow profiles.
donkey-hotei··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
just a nit: Facebook does not collect "shadow profiles".
donkey-hotei··on Abolish the Police? Survivors of the Chaos in Seattle Aren’t So Sure
For those of you who were not here when this happened: The police decided not to respond the actual 911 calls in or _near_ the CHOP (the auto shop was a block _away_, not within) was a retaliatory tactic they employed out of spite. Knowing full and well that it would look bad on the protesters and those who created the CHOP. Denying health services and aide is NOT what people who are advocating for defunding the police are advocating for.

I agree, this is absolutely a straw-man argument.

donkey-hotei··on Abolish the Police? Survivors of the Chaos in Seattle Aren’t So Sure
That this article is written by someone who isn't from Seattle, and posted by someone on hacker news who isn't from Seattle, really amuses some of us who live on the hill.
donkey-hotei··on WhatsApp has introduced a feature that allows users to send and receive money
Can you provide a source on "FB being a part of PRISM"? I can't find anything concrete to substantiate the claim.
donkey-hotei··on Leave Facebook
On one level, Trump's statements about mail-in voting are just flatly untrue, pure propaganda, and completely irresponsible. But isn't it weird as well how much people are willing to let these massive tech companies essentially become fact-checkers for the content posted on it? I that that's also frightening to think about.
donkey-hotei··on Tell HN: Facebook IC4 Hiring Freeze
Yes, it's still a 6-month cycle - but FB is still aggressively hiring. Though they are pretty maxed out at the IC3 level for 2020.
donkey-hotei··on Mark Zuckerberg defends leaving up Trump posts
This is a horrible take.
donkey-hotei··on Which billionaires are doing the most good?

donkey-hotei··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually use Keybase?

donkey-hotei··on The human cost of the Kindle

Can you elaborate on this comment?

donkey-hotei··on Show HN: Watch Stanford CS Lectures Together
This is awesome ! As a largely self-educated engineer I recall feeling (and still do) that most of what I was missing from taking online courses was the « lecture hall » feeling, having discussion immediately afterwards, &c. Nice work !
donkey-hotei··on OverTheWire: Wargames to learn and practice security concepts
I think the definition has broadened over the years, even pwnable.tw calls their CTF-style challenges "wargames".
donkey-hotei··on Brushing up on operating systems and C programming
Sure! I recommend sitting with the book, a pen, and a notebook at a cafe or wherever you like and write solutions to the practice problems you see sprinkled in each chapter as you read every single word. Then choose a few of the homework problems and do those, some will require a computer. Most of all, work through the labs and don't cheat yourself by looking at other (probably not very good) solutions posted online! Solving the labs with the textbook and TLPI[0] as a reference is how I got the most out of the course. A list of the assignments, as they're done at CMU, is posted below[1]. Good luck!

donkey-hotei··on Brushing up on operating systems and C programming
I second this. Seriously the best textbook on systems programming I've worked through especially when accompanied with the famous CMU labs[0]. Anyone who works thoroughly through this book can become a master systems programmer.

donkey-hotei··on ROP Emporium: Learn return-oriented programming through a series of challenges
There's really no need for a leaderboard on a site like this. It's just a site to teach ROP in isolation. If you want to pwn with a leaderboard I recommend pwnable.tw where you can test the ROP skills you learned in the ROP emporium while also learning about auditing binaries for memory corruption bugs of various kinds.
