dogmatism··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
wait what? I always thought "capeesh" was just "capisce" with the end swallowed? Is "capisce" not standard italian?
dogmatism··on Which countries would benefit most from an American brain drain?
A close relative is in fairly rigorous data science in climate based littoral oceanographic research (maintains a couple R packages) doing PhD, funding cut as part of reprisals against a certain governor

exploring offers at 3 Canadian universities

so, only a couple hours drive further north to continue fairly rigorous data science research

yeah, we don't need that "soft science" nonsense here

dogmatism··on Tips for mathematical handwriting (2007)
learned this by experience in...1998

thanks for the insight

dogmatism··on VSCode’s SSH agent is bananas
the answer is in the blog

as always, Emacs

dogmatism··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
wait what? Escobar was responsible for conservatively 4,000 people killed, some at his own hand

DPR conspired but didn't actually directly kill anyone

Not saying DPR was a good person, but a little perspective is in order

dogmatism··on Gondwanaland: The search for a land before (human) time
Thought this might be about Fastmail's Bron Gondwana
dogmatism··on Why Are Cancer Guidelines Stuck in PDFs?
This is all predicated on the guidelines actually reflecting best practices
dogmatism··on Ask HN: Do you backup your Emails?
yes, I run a local mail server on my nas/server, and sync from online accounts every few months, and also keep local backup via syncing with Thunderbird
dogmatism··on Goodbye, Rust. I wish you success but I'm back to C++ (sorry, it is a rant)
Well, there are denaskuloj, but aside from that, I don't think languages are adopted into communities to replace other languages based on their merits, but based on socio-religious factors that have nothing to do with the language itself
dogmatism··on A cycling desk / Zwifting with a split keyboard
fucking Inigo San Milan and Peter Attia and their "zone 2" bullshit

this is nothing new. Back in the day, the teaching was "ride in the little ring in winter" which was essentially Zone 2

Plus San Milan is tainted by his Saunier Duval years, and Attia is clearly a grifter

Just fucking ride. Most of the time easy, once or twice a week hard

now get off my lawn!

dogmatism··on Why is a Guillotine blade diagonal?
It's too soon to say
dogmatism··on Canadian women's soccer team loses six points, coach banned over drone scandal
I agree. The points were deducted from the team's total. The team itself was not deducted (though I guess you could argue without the points, the team was deducted from the tournament, lol)
dogmatism··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
It's actually not that hard from a conceptual implementation standpoint, it's a matter of scale, network effects, and regulatory capture
dogmatism··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
no money for that

there are backup paper processes, but they start fresh when the systems go down

If it was printing paper in case of downtime 24/7, it would be massive wasteage for the 99% of time system is up

dogmatism··on Doomsday Prepping: Reactionary Behavior or Inherited Instinct?
said no one who worked in hospitals in 2020 and 2021

Not sure I'll ever get over it

dogmatism··on Fighting an anti-doping finding
MAL's finding is not exactly surprising, and Astana has been suspect since they became a thing in the wake of the demise of Liberty Seguros after Operacion Puerto

Superman ain't Lizzie Banks

dogmatism··on Used cars retain designs and features more coveted than their replacements
Got a fairly low mileage Chevy Bolt for 11

Deals are out there if you're not too picky

dogmatism··on The forgotten war on beepers
A lot of doctors still prefer to carry beepers
dogmatism··on Hardest problem in computer science: centering things
It's a joke, no?
dogmatism··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
US PCP doctors do take calls. It's less common for them to go to the hospital to admit their own patients anymore since the rise of "hospitalists" but they still take outpatient calls and calls from the ER.

Also, PCPs are subject to the most metrics/rubrics of any, and all the crap paperwork that any specialist can foist off onto them, they do. Shit rolls downhill, and PCP's are at the bottom

They may stop seeing patients at 5, but they sure as shit aren't done at 5. Most are logging back in even later doing all the "paperwork" they didn't have time to do during the day. Even has a nickname: "pajama time"

dogmatism··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
NHS is in a process of replacing doctors with physician assistants
dogmatism··on Intermittent fasting linked to a 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death
It's just a poster being presented at a niche AHA sub-division meeting from some researchers in China trolling the US based NHANES data

It's presenting to present, just part of the game of academics, and it does not represent an opinion of the conference sponsor (AHA) at all

edit: here is the link to the abstract for anyone interested https://www.abstractsonline.com/pp8/#!/20343/presentation/37...

dogmatism··on Class Action Against General Motors LLC, OnStar LLC, LexisNexis Risk Solutions [pdf]
If you're in the market for a smaller, cheap(ish) EV with decent range, the Chevy Bolt (used) is basically the only option, and honestly can be had for less than any equivalent ICE vehicle of similar quality/mileage
dogmatism··on Frozen embryos are 'children,' Alabama Supreme Court rules
thought this was going to be some Roy Moore shit, but it's actually a sensible ruling that follows the expected dogshit constitutional amendment

incidentally "wandering Mobile patient" is an amusing turn of phrase

Also, knowing stories about Mobile Infirmary, this is entirely unsurprising

dogmatism··on Cycling Doping Fallacies
1) Armstrong was (is) an asshole who destroyed careers and lives, which is part of why they threw the book at him as opposed to others

2) That said, 7 in a row is still incredible. While he had a few incidents, he was always able to recover and never had an injury or illness that knocked him out. If Roglic could say the same, he'd probably have won at least 2 Tours if not three

3) Of course they're still all doping. WvA winning on Ventoux... Pogacar winning Tours de France and Flanders? Pas normal

4) Speaking of all still doping, the ongoing involvement of former dopers really goes against a stated desire for clean racing. Inigo san Milan making bones with his "zone 2" bullshit...dude was team doctor for Saunier Duval. University of Colorado should be embarrassed

5) all that said...who cares? The NFL barely tests because who wants to watch 1950's football? Same with cycling. I'd rather see van der Poel do inhuman things. Cadel Evans era was boring

dogmatism··on What does the cerebellum do?
OP said "did" implying finished. It's a six year residency minimum, though the first year is general surgery. It's not often people do the whole damn thing, then decide to bail. Usually it's after 2 or 3 years

Though some people are less burdened by golden handcuffs and sunk-cost fallacy

Plus, I've never met a happy (or sane) neurosurgeon

dogmatism··on Electricity That's Too Cheap to Meter
*cries in my location where energy is like 70% from imported LNG and there's only flat rate pricing at $0.30/kWh...and it's windy AF but for political reasons no one's built the wind farms

Oh and there's a nuc plant I'm in meltdown range of, but don't get any pricing benefit

dogmatism··on Endurain: Self-hosted Strava like service
that's not why they had to get up. It's because they were hitting the EPO so hard, their hematocrits would be like over 60% (60% red blood cells/mL of blood) and thus when their heart rate/cardiac output would drop during sleep (to very low levels typically of highly trained athletes...not because of the EPO) the blood would be too viscous and start to clot

so the low heart rates caused a problem for those abusing EPO, but wasn't a result of using EPO

dogmatism··on Towards accurate differential diagnosis with large language models
No, you’re right, it doesn’t work reliably

I just think the y combinator crowd underestimates the human obstacles and ancient tech in the path of getting AI implemented
