dnsworks··on The Hacker's Path
Our community is filled with sexists, that's just how it is. The reason there are no women in tech is because we're all misogynistic assholes. Devops community, point in case. Every time I see a programmer or a sysadmin refer to women or their employees as "bitches", I put a note, "Never hire this lawsuit waiting to happen" into my addressbook entry for them.
dnsworks··on SimpleCDN has been effectively kicked off the Internet by its ISPs w/o warning
"* If you're legitimately using lots of resources, we'll move you around if you start getting near the limits on the hardware you're on, but we won't install new hardware just for you."

Could you define an "illegitimate use of resources"?

dnsworks··on Parsing the impact of Anonymous
Anonymous punished some bad corporate citizens for doing the wrong thing, and bullied some of them into doing the right thing. This is in direct response to the bullying Assange has gotten. Legal or not, it's sort of awesome to see bullies get bullied back.
dnsworks··on Why Rackspace Sucks
20 new servers at Softlayer: $4k/month to month, provisioned in 2 hours

20 almost equivalent servers at Rackspace: $10k/month on a 1-2 year contract, provisioned a week after two weeks of quotes and contract negotiations.

That's what I was expecting you to give as the reason to the title of your post.

dnsworks··on Boycott Amazon? Not doing it.
They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

..

It's OK to ignore abuse when by doing so you are enabled to maintain your financial status.

dnsworks··on ASK HN: Easy ways for a web developer to make online cash?
Not everybody is meant to be a consultant, and consulting (or running any business, or performing any job) is a lot more work than "just writing code".
dnsworks··on EFF: Online Speech is Only as Strong as the Weakest Intermediary
It seems to me that Amazon has set a dangerous legal precedence for the hosting industry in general. Except for DMCA takedown notices, ISPs have been able to uphold that they do not own their customers' content (the earliest big case I can think about was when the Scientologists sued Netcom, and everybody else in the world).
dnsworks··on With Domain Name Seizures Increasing, It's Time For A Decentralized DNS System
My main interest in a decentralized DNS system is to make it easier to do business with countries when the US decides it wants to steal their oil, and creates sanctions You couldn't purchase .ly domains until we stopped bullying Libya in 2004. If we build decentralized systems outside of the reach of the government, maybe we can even build a world free of petty politics and corrupt governments (like our own). It's a pipe dream, but it's the best dream I've got.
dnsworks··on Tablets
Right, Apple's shareholders are out there saying "I'm so glad we're making great stuff". Apple wants to make money, no matter how much fandom we bestow upon Apple for having a great design aesthetic, Apple is a corporation whose aim is to make money. Apple is a golden boy because they aren't Microsoft, and if we keep comparing the two, we never give Apple an honest shake.
dnsworks··on How to destroy your business with one email
What's really interesting is that most of these reviews happened yesterday, and it appears mots of the reviewers have never actually engaged in business with the scammy vendor, or attempted to engage in business, or well ever heard of the business before this. Being the voice of reason, isn't that a violation of Yelp's terms of services? Yelp itself is known to be somewhat of a bully.
dnsworks··on Failure: How it powers Silicon Valley and handcuffs Japan
Quick summation: Cargo cults don't work.
dnsworks··on Startup Ideas Every Nerd Has (That Never Work)
Geeks are so incredibly negative it's why I end up trying to convince friends to find a better career filled with happier people whenever they ask how to get into the tech field.

There's nothing more pathetic then that guy who is the born skeptic and can't see beyond his own inability to find success, constantly putting down every idea his friends give him. I'm told that's what it's like trying to do a start-up in England.

dnsworks··on The Men Who Stole the World
Only in te music industry could somebody do enough coke to simultaneously attempt to sue your company out of existence while investing $100m into it. If there's one thing I agree with PG on it's don't do a music start-up.
dnsworks··on Crowdsourcing Jobs to a Worldwide Mobile Workforce
I'm reminded of Japanese intelligence gathering methods in the days leading up to Pearl Harbor. This would be a hell of an intelligence gathering tool, the best part of it is that you could gather data in such a fractioned and distributed way that individual people wouldn't be able to guess what it is they're doing.
dnsworks··on The Pirate Bay verdict: 4-10 months prison, SEK 46 million in damages (Swedish)
If you've read, "Catch Me If You Can", by Frank Abagnale Jr., then your opinion of Swedish prisons might be that they're country clubs where you get to sew parachutes and go to school for free, in comparison to those in the US. This doesn't sound so terrible, considering that this is a large scale criminal organization (whether you think what they did is a crime or not, the Swedish legal system has officially deemed it one).

The owners would have far more personal protection from legal in the US, though.

dnsworks··on Are You Vitamin D Deficient? (Infographic)
Does this mean that vegans are more likely to be Vitamin D deficient (and vegetarians to a certain degree)?
dnsworks··on Are You Vitamin D Deficient? (Infographic)
Living in Seattle was brutal for me, it left me incredibly depressed and I ultimate fled back to San Francisco for my sanity. Even SF is pretty rough, so I only live in the corporate apartment complexes in SOMA where I can lay in the sun an hour a day after swimming, it keeps me quite happy (and tan!)
dnsworks··on I'm technical. Be my co-founder?
On that note, you might think about talking to troyd (a HN user) who is working on a similar app at http://cloverapp.com/ ..
dnsworks··on Ask HN: Why does no one talk about working or interviewing for Apple?
Remember the Oompa Loompas?

Same concept.

dnsworks··on I'm technical. Be my co-founder?
Probably, but with a good pricing model and an easy to use system (maybe a ssl-wrapped caching proxy or an ssl vpn) to send the logs over the wire for processing and storage would attract the attention of the devops world (which is worth about $3.50) Then you could just tell everybody, "it's like splunk, but in the cloud, and affordable". Fame, fortune, and the critical logs of hundreds of new startups would quickly be yours.
dnsworks··on Re-entry to US without backscatter or pat-down
Never heard about EPIC, but the EFF is part of the engineering community. Our community solves the problems that the rest of the world creates. The EFF should be involved .. maybe somebody can get arrested for planning flash-mobs at the airports Tuesday and Wednesday to decimate holiday travel plans and put the issue into the national spotlight. That's something a bunch of hackers could put together.
dnsworks··on I'm technical. Be my co-founder?
If you're open to suggestions, right now I feel that there's a huge market opportunity for a SaaS Splunk killer with more reasonable pricing. Having a great analytics UI is 1/4 of the problem there.
dnsworks··on Re-entry to US without backscatter or pat-down
I'm curious if any lawyers from the EFF have put themselves through this so that they have good grounds to sue the federal government for violation of constitutional rights?
dnsworks··on Ask HN: Is there a hippie commune for hackers?
Have you considered arcosanti? It's where most of the ravers I know went when they realized their lives were empty without drugs.
dnsworks··on Another Hacker’s Laptop, Cell Phones Searched at Border
At some point you open your eyes, accept that everything we've been told about democracy and representative republics and freedom is bullshit. Then you either decide to fight a futile fight, or try to enjoy this life that's way too short.

The system is too big to fix. It's run by a small number of wealthy people, and any notion of freedom is an illusion.

dnsworks··on Phrack #67
I've been reading Phrack so long web browsers didn't exist. This makes me feel very old.
dnsworks··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me hard
Without giving too many details away, my friend was chosen by Jobs to take this role, pulled away from one at Apple where he was very happy, given a promotion and a raise, then fired 6 weeks later. The quote is from his blog (which I'll not post due to his desire to be discreet) but I trust him, and he says it's verbotem, and knowing his speech impediment very well, I find the story very believable. Further corroborated by having worked for a friend a few years back who had this same position as well (more successfully and for a longer period of time, neither knew each other btw) before he got fired on the spot while Jobs was outraged over something (my speculation is he spilled some spinach goop on a mock turtle neck and decided to take it out on somebody).

dnsworks··on Google offers engineer $3.5M to not leave for Facebook
You don't need profit if you're too big to fail.
dnsworks··on Google offers engineer $3.5M to not leave for Facebook
I don't buy it, not from a company as large as Google who has more institutionalized about scaling and building web properties. Just because it sounds really cool that Google throws gobs of money at engineers doesn't necessarily make it the best approach. It sounds like a fear-driven tactic, and if they're that worried about keeping talent, they're probably not going to put that good talent to use anyways.
