dl8··on Cultivated Disinterest in Professional Sports
I find it the opposite, and I played in high school too, but since I know the mechanics of everything it makes it a lot more interesting. For instance most people only get the gist of the game, whereas for me actually seeing what formations the offense is running and what coverage scheme the defense is using on a particular play makes it 100x more interesting than if I didn't know any of that stuff like the average viewer.
dl8··on Workflow for iOS
Was this built in Swift or Obj-C?
dl8··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Awaiting the Boston launch.
dl8··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Well it's about efficiency too, Coffee Meets Bagel does the 1 day a match thing and after 4 weeks of non matches (either I wasn't attracted to them or they to me) I just quit the site. Compared to a minute spent swiping 30 people on Tinder, or a minute or two reading someone's profile on OKC.
dl8··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
Signed up and got put on waiting list. Used OkC and Tinder before, let's see how different this is. Also will be interesting to see if this follows a lot of the online dating trends that was outlined in Christian Rudder's Dataclysm book.
dl8··on Show HN: Free, anonymous coding interview practice
Pretty much the same thing happened to me a year ago, I was at an onsite interview, did really well 4 out of the 5 rounds, but 1 round I just completely choked some basic linked list question and looked like an idiot.
dl8··on How can an introvert Asian engineer like me make friends?
I was an introverted Asian in high school, how I learned to wane out of it is alcohol. I'm not saying I'm dependent on alcohol, but it teaches you to not care and just be more social, which you can try to slowly bleed into your personality when you're sober.
dl8··on Never Pay Hotels for Internet Again
I tried this once to upgrade my room to a suite, you basically put $20 in between your ID and credit card when you check in, and ask if there are any complimentary room/food/credit upgrades with a smile.

However, I was with a coworker who knew the 2nd-in-command boss of the hotel. So one night I was having fine dining with them and got pretty drunk on the free wine that was served to me. I accidentally spilled to the boss that I got upgraded to a suite just by tipping the front desk person, he got pretty furious about it and I think I cost that front desk person his job :/

dl8··on Poachbox – Recruit Startup and Tech Talent
I've had an awful experience with Hired. Wasn't just a one-time thing either.
dl8··on Programming and Depression (2012)
I think if you do web or mobile stuff, you can easily amaze people as well if you have some interesting projects, considering how everyone has a smartphone nowadays - you can just be like "hey check out this side project I've been working on lately"
dl8··on Ask HN: Advice for first days/weeks/months at first dev job?
That reminds me of a HN thread a few days ago about someone getting fired after two weeks since he asked too many questions.
dl8··on Ask HN: Online Gambling + Oculus Rift
An Oculus Rift poker game using bitcoins as currency would be pretty neat.
dl8··on How Daft Punk Created One of Their Most Famous Samples
Even though Kanye West gets a lot of flak for his behavior, I think that most of the sampling that he's done (especially on his first 3 albums) has been amazing. Like taking a 2 second sound clip from Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne and somehow transforming it into the main beat for his song in Champion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XaDeC2LEdA#t=68
dl8··on NSA seeks to build quantum computer that could crack most types of encryption
Why exactly would it cost so much?
dl8··on Rap Genius Traffic Has Dropped By Over 80%
Well yeah you don't need meanings for some songs that pretty literal like that, but if you listen to say some of Lupe Fiasco's top songs where he has a metaphor referencing another metaphor every line then those meanings can be pretty helpful to decipher what he means.
dl8··on Stuck and Discouraged
I am more or less in the same boat as you are. I graduated roughly a year ago, and I've been trying to find a developer position in any big tech city (SV, Seattle, NY, Boston, etc). I've gotten many phone/skype interviews, even got flown out a few times for onsite interviews, but I suppose I'm just not that great of an interviewer since I've been rejected a ridiculous amount of times.

It's really discouraging, but I've began teaching myself a lot of new technologies and started working on some personal projects (one was even on front page of HN a few months ago). I think the tech industry is a very merit based industry, and if I just get good enough (or at least appear good enough) then I will eventually land a good position.

dl8··on Ask HN: What do you do when someone praises/recognizes you?
It's pretty simple, just say "Thanks"/"Thank You".
dl8··on ASK HN: Information Systems versus Computer Science
You should do CS since there's quite a lot of overlap of IS. With a CS degree you can still go for IS-oriented jobs when you graduate (and you may even be considered above people who have an IS degree), whereas it's a bit tougher to go for CS jobs with an IS degree.
dl8··on Ask HN: making a living by playing poker online?
If you're in the US, it was very do-able before Black Friday (when the 3 major websites got banned), but nowadays it's way tougher since the sites that you can actually play in the US don't have as much action. In the past, you could basically multi-table at the medium-high stakes, break even, and make 60k+ on the rakeback + bonuses the sites give you (like comps from a casino).

But overall, from what I hear, it's just a grueling "job". Especially if you don't have the mindset to handle it, as in you'd have to handle being unlucky for a long time (downswings) and not tilt.

But if you have the right attitude and truly enjoy the game, then yes, you can make a living playing poker online, although you may lose a lot of money initially until you have the skills to consistently out play your opponents.

dl8··on Scientists discover second code hiding in DNA
After talking to someone who knows quite a bit about this stuff, apparently most people in the genomics/bioinformatics community kinda already knew about this, just that the researchers who wrote the paper were the first one to officially categorize them.
dl8··on Peter Higgs: I wouldn't be productive enough for today's academic system
If you watch actually funny shows that have a laugh track, such as Seinfeld, and removed them - they're still funny. Idk I just find BBT humor very bland, like the punch line to a joke may be just someone screaming out a nerd reference just for the sake of saying "Hey were nerds!"
dl8··on Peter Higgs: I wouldn't be productive enough for today's academic system
The main thing I don't like about BBT is that it's generally not funny. Look how the show holds without its laugh track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKS3MGriZcs
dl8··on Ask HN: Where else can we use GPU processing?
Bioinformatics/Genomics have been beginning to use GPUs for their data processing, since there's vast amount of DNA data that can take a long time to get through.
dl8··on "You're not qualified to join our team"
I've applied to a soul crushing number of companies this year and I've yet to land a position. Sometimes it's because I just fail at the tech interviews, or I just have a brain fart and mess up trivial stuff, but quite a number of times, like the OP I thought I do quite well yet still get rejected. Yeah it's a numbers game, but I think I've applied and got rejected/not responded to by a absurd amount of companies so far.
dl8··on Show HN: WebRTC Poker
As an avid poker player, I think this is a neat idea for a lot of casual live players to get into online play.
dl8··on LinkedIn's New Way to Kill Itself
Yeah, and most of the emails (that I've received) are just HR people promoting their own blog posts or something.
dl8··on Ask HN: Chess players here?
I'm a chess newbie but I think the best/most simple chess website to play at is http://www.lichess.org
dl8··on Show HN: CinemaBuff - Actor graphs using IMDB ratings
It's now fixed.
dl8··on Show HN: League Warrior
extremely cool idea, hope people in my area actually use it though.
