dkobia··on It Pays to Not Pay Your Debts
You should watch this after you read the article: https://youtu.be/6c-WCg2Y7sE (How Dying Gas Wells Are Making One Company Rich) — I imagine it’s all Bloombergs effort to expand on this story. Fantastic journalism.
dkobia··on Ask HN: What excites you today (technologically speaking)?
The first trillionaire will likely be a result of space. I can see a time when robots mine asteroids and process material on the moon.
dkobia··on Ask HN: What excites you today (technologically speaking)?
Truly exciting time. That we now have an mRNA vaccine for malaria, a disease that kills millions is truly understated.
dkobia··on Why return to the office if you’re just Zooming all day anyway?
One of the great understated problems of remote work is conflict resolution. Quicker to handle face-to-face and just drags on over zoom. I absolutely love WFH, but much like any long distance relationship, dissonance lingers which is unhealthy for any organization.
dkobia··on [dead]
I’d been running two 4K monitors off my MacBook Pro and noticed high cpu usage and a non stop fan in the afternoons when the room got a little warmer. Turns out the integrated gpu is struggling and the cpu spends more cycles handling cooling management.

This got annoying enough that I invested in an external gpu (not cheap!!) which resolved my issues. I get it — 4K and 5K monitors require much more graphics processing and a MacBooks integrated gpu can only do so much.

dkobia··on Lightning Network Flaws
Considering the author seems to be committed to BCH gives this list a somewhat jaundiced perspective. The LN vs BCH arguments are quite fervent mostly because it is likely a zero sum game - the bitcoin purists vs the pragmatists.
dkobia··on In 2017, I interviewed with Elizabeth Holmes to be Head of Finance at Theranos
Twitter threads are awesome. I love that you can tell which portions of the thread are the most interesting by the level of engagement in likes or comments.
dkobia··on BioNTech Plans to Address Infectious Diseases on the African Continent
They could start with COVID-19
dkobia··on Ask HN: Examples of email-first projects or startups?
Surprised no one has mentioned Morning Brew: https://www.morningbrew.com/daily
dkobia··on Don't call it 'outsourcing': Hiring employees globally is getting easier
Depending on the sensitivity of your project or for compliance purposes, background checks might be necessary. The efficacy of doing this with global employees is questionable at best. That said it is possible to design siloed systems that grant access based on trust.
dkobia··on No-code startup Bubble raises $100M
I look at No-Code the same way I look at Canva — one can create powerful designs in Canva that were once the exclusive domain of expert photoshop/illustrator designers. It does not replace them but reduces the barriers to entry for others which is a fantastic thing! There are many ideas that can be set free and realized with No-Code platforms that otherwise wouldn’t due to the difficulty. I say this as a software engineer. No-code won’t necessarily replace us but it will elevate the game.
dkobia··on Canada to make online hate speech a crime punishable by fine
I used to believe in the absoluteness of freedom of speech, especially with living in the United States, and that any attempts to regulate free speech were the slippery slope to regulating speech itself. However after witnessing firsthand, hate speech played out to its apex I am not so sure. The denial of other freedoms and the death and destruction it can leave in its wake leave me questioning this ideal.
dkobia··on Ask HN: Post Burnout Ideas
I had the same exact issue but was exacerbated by cycling unfortunately. If you do get into cycling which is a great post burnout stress reliever, I highly recommend a bike fitting - it’ll make cycling so much more enjoyable and avoid further injury. This with plenty of stretching and a standing desk mostly solved my back issues.
dkobia··on City roads – This website renders every single road within a city
Very nicely done and beautiful vector output.
dkobia··on Starlink Satellites Tracker
Looks like some de-orbit in months! There must be a quite a lot of calibration/testing going on and I can’t imagine how expensive this endeavor must be. I am curious about the failure rate of these satellites at that orbit.
dkobia··on History of Techno
Saw him in the US, live here now.
dkobia··on History of Techno
I love techno / house music. I’ve been unable to shake it since I caught the bug many many years ago in Kenya. It came as a pleasant surprise and shock to meet Carl Craig at thanksgiving some years back. My wife neglected to mention he was her cousin — real Detroit House music royalty. They understand he’s big somehow but all that is lost because techno and house are not considered “American” or “black” music for that matter. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out on stage with Carl watching him do his thing which I could have never imagined happening.
dkobia··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
I ran through it and it is pretty impressive. Good work!
dkobia··on There’s no such thing as “a startup within a big company”
I worked in a startup lab within a huge multinational company. In many ways it felt like a startup because we had very limited runway to incubate and commercialize our ideas, so that definitely put the fire under our feet.

Despite an effort to firewall us from the larger organization the culture and processes of the mothership always seemed to leak in and contaminate the organic startup flows. Additionally a large organization is extremely risk averse unlike a real startup and this manifests itself in a multitude of ways.

dkobia··on The Brazil Variant Is Exposing the World’s Vulnerability
The context in which "Chinese Virus" or "Kung Flu" (by the same person) was used is very telling for the message they're trying to send. The same person is also well known for other slurs. Additionally it was used at the time, to deflect blame for inaction.

I suspect that if a scientist had called it "The Chinese Virus" or "The Wuhan Virus" no one would have thought twice about it. They probably did too.

dkobia··on Why outsource your auth system?
In the past I always rolled my (our) own auth but in recent years, it is so much easier to offload this to another system for so many reasons including just being more secure (policies, MFA, oauth2 pkce etc). I've used AWS Cognito which is probably one of the cheapest along with Auth0 and Okta.

I've even migrated from my (our) own to another provider and back, including provider to provider without an issue. I was initially concerned with vendor lock-in, but it hasn't been a major problem so far. With most of them it is fairly easy to migrate without any interruption to your users (including MFA!).

dkobia··on Parler’s de-platforming shows the exceptional power of cloud providers
We're also waking up to the fact that free speech is an incredibly difficult ideal to uphold. Hate speech, fake speech, etc are testing the limits. Other ideals like religion are much easier to uphold in a mostly secular society until a new religion threatens the place of a dying incumbent. Really all these ideals are great when we're on the same page, until we aren't.
dkobia··on YouTube suspends Donald Trump's channel
Free speech is an incredibly difficult ideal to uphold and I think it is unfair for governments to delegate that responsibility to tech companies.
dkobia··on Ask HN: What is a product you wish was sold in your country but isnt?
I'll second this as a rally fan.
dkobia··on Ask HN: What is a product you wish was sold in your country but isnt?
Suzuki Jimny. What an awesome little SUV. Not available in the US.
dkobia··on Jetbrains founders turn billionaires without VC help
JetBrains subscription has been my most satisfying subscription to date. More than my Netflix and Disney plus and I like baby Yoda :)
dkobia··on Facebook's Hypocrisy on Apple's New iOS 14 Privacy Feature
Probably. Both Google and Facebook have other ingenious ways to target however. The IDFA tag was low hanging fruit.
dkobia··on Facebook's Hypocrisy on Apple's New iOS 14 Privacy Feature
As an owner of a small business, Facebook's point about small businesses is not inconsequential. Targeted advertising does reduce the cost of advertising pretty significantly for any small business or startup. Without it we're left with brute force advertising that only large companies can afford.

As a consumer I'm thrilled at possibly getting some control back and I will likely switch back to iOS. I am conflicted.

dkobia··on What Did the Past Smell Like?
In the old coastal town of Lamu, Kenya that is inundated by donkeys, you get a rough idea of what a town full of horses and fish smells like. The air is filled with an almost oppressive smell of poop and fish. It is unquestionably unpleasant. In some other towns, you are reminded of the smell of exhaust from old trucks belching pollution into the air. And lest you forget, you'll be reminded of a modern western construct - deodorant.
dkobia··on Moving my serverless project to Ruby on Rails
You can have the best of both worlds with Ruby Jets https://rubyonjets.com/. Build micro services inside of a monolith. Might not make sense, but you're essentially building one app that deploys to micro services in AWS, in your favorite language and a framework that is essentially Rails.
