djakjxnanjak··on Alphabet Announces Second Quarter 2019 Results [pdf]
I love it. Everyone’s claiming a $5 billion fine is insignificant, so there’s no room to argue the tax savings from writing it off is meaningful.
djakjxnanjak··on Amazon.com Announces Second Quarter Sales Up 20%
Revenue is up 20% year over year. The growth is real, not just a goal.
djakjxnanjak··on EU opens Amazon antitrust investigation
>Retail stores buy the products they put on their shelves, at wholesale prices. They then mark up the prices to a retail price charged to the end buyer when they resell the products to the end buyer.

Why is this difference salient? This process of selling, reselling and markup recurs for years. Economically the outcome is the same as the store charging a fee like Amazon, just with the payments split up and time shifted. If you doubt that the same power imbalances exist in brick-and-mortar, read about how Walmart squeezes suppliers.

The iPhone Google Maps app has the feature, although I haven’t turned it on so can’t say how well it works.
djakjxnanjak··on When it comes to composition and length, passwords mostly don't matter
I guess I’d like the ability to delegate the responsibility of updating the ownership of my phone number to an entity of my choosing. The phone company would only be able to update with this entity’s go-ahead. Services could specialize in this kind of work so identity verification would be a core competency, and I could pay more for better protection.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to prevent your SMS from being rerouted, or get a special protected number?

The ability to do this would not mitigate Microsoft’s responsibilities here, but at least it would allow some people to help themselves.

Seems like a no-brainer for both companies when faced with Apple TV having everything.

Heroin dealers are mixing in fentanyl because it’s extremely dense (in terms of doses per mass) and therefore easy to smuggle. People are ODing on fentanyl because those same properties make it hard to dose accurately. None of this would happen if opioids were legal.

djakjxnanjak··on How Discount Brokerages Make Money
Patio11’s comment got me very curious and I’m not sure this quite explains it. If I’m selling millions of dollars worth of a tech stock, would IB give me a materially better price?
djakjxnanjak··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
If you’re uninsured, Gilead will give you a voucher you can take to a pharmacy to get it for free.

I don’t believe this press release is actually announcing any change in the situation on the ground for people who need Truvada - I’m saying that as a person who’s on Truvada, and who’s helped other people get it. If there’s any change, it’s not mentioned in that press release.

I think it’s just like all the press releases where Trump claims credit for some growing business’s hiring plans. It’s a cheap way companies can curry favor from the administration. Kind of slimy but of no great consequence.

djakjxnanjak··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
When there are multiple cost-effective public health measures that can achieve the same end, we should pursue all of them.

In the case of Truvada, we already did the hard part (inventing it). Now it’s just a chemical that can be infinitely duplicated a low cost. It would be a huge wasted opportunity, a moral crime really, not to give it away for free to everyone that can benefit from it.

And the same is true for the flu vaccine, the birth control pill, the seat belt, etc. These are miraculous technological advances. If you support the use of these advances, but not Truvada, I would take a hard look at what factors might be playing into that.

djakjxnanjak··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
If those filthy citizens would just wash their hands, we wouldn’t need to waste money developing flu treatment either. You’re a genius! We can save so much money.

And we can stop working on making cars safer - all we have to do is tell everyone to follow the rules of the road and almost all collisions will be prevented!

djakjxnanjak··on Trump Signs Executive Order Compelling Disclosure of Prices in Health Care
I’ve been getting free Truvada since Obama was president. Nobody pays for Truvada - Gilead reimburses you if your insurance doesn’t cover it. Sounds like just another example of Trump claiming credit for something that was already happening.

djakjxnanjak··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
I do agree it will be a shit show when the big one hits. Don’t rely on earthquake insurance to fix your problems. Unless you have $$$$, your house is not going to be in the front of the line for rebuilding. Spend a thousand dollars now on braces and bolts.

I imagine everyone in the building trades will be fully employed in the rebuilding effort even if CEA runs out of money. The state would probably bail the CEA out, but either way people are going to be waiting for a long time for someone to come give them a new house.

djakjxnanjak··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
That’s a percentage of the value of the structure, not the structure+land.

When buying insurance, you answer questions about your property and the insurance company estimates the cost of replacement of the structure. In my case, it’s about 30% of the market value of the home.

djakjxnanjak··on A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses
My earthquake insurance is more like 0.1% and I'm pretty sure the rates are set by the state - where are you getting your numbers?

If the cost were 0.5% I don't think it would be worth paying, that would buy a lot of seismic reinforcement.

djakjxnanjak··on What a deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg reveals about how we're manipulated
What you’re suggesting is essentially DRM for news, where only an approved subset of sources would be blessed as non-fake. Might as well go back to the days of 3 TV channels.

djakjxnanjak··on $1B for 20,000 Bay Area homes
It’s not being in another region that’s the problem, it’s moving. People tend to find forced moves traumatic and will go to great lengths to avoid them.
djakjxnanjak··on $1B for 20,000 Bay Area homes
No way, no how is Google or any other decent employer going to uproot all their knowledge workers and make them unproductive for the foreseeable future by forcing them to move to another region.

The diaspora from the Bay Area will keep happening the way it has been: at the economic margins. Over time, people outside of tech who aren’t subsidized by prop 13 or rent control will get priced out. There will be a perpetual underclass living in trailers and garages, and the landed aristocracy will be further entrenched.

djakjxnanjak··on Berlin approves 5-year rent freeze
How on earth is rent control supposed to help with that? If anything, rent control makes being a landlord less appealing relative to selling to a Russian oligarch.
