dj_gitmo··on People are shooting down Walmart delivery drones
IIRC a big problem with delivery drones is that their payload is limited by the damage that would be caused should the payload go into freefall. Going higher would just increase the ground impact speed.

Paging Joseph Robinette Biden
dj_gitmo··on I am not yet ready to switch to Zig from Rust
I have always wondered if it would be possible to write a language agnostic package manager. Lord knows we probably don't need more programming languages, but it would be much easier to get on of the ground if it could just plug itself into an existing package manager.
dj_gitmo··on Water is bursting from another abandoned West Texas oil well, continuing a trend
These wells may have been drilled before the current owners were alive.

> There’s nothing uncommon about a leaky old well. Many in West Texas were drilled during World War II and 80 years underground can do major damage to steel and concrete casing. Many of those wells were also flooded with water to squeeze out the last drops of oil.

dj_gitmo··on Taboos and Self-Censorship Among U.S. Psychology Professors
Absolutely. Everyone wants to be the thought police if they think they can get away with it. Before Bari Weiss became a free speech warrior, she was trying to get pro-Palestine professors fired.
dj_gitmo··on Taboos and Self-Censorship Among U.S. Psychology Professors
I am not against taboos. Taboos can be good. However, it can be a problem when what is considered taboo expands to encompass basically everything.
dj_gitmo··on Taboos and Self-Censorship Among U.S. Psychology Professors
I don't find it surprising and it fits my experience with millennial, and younger, Anglo sphere women. If you bring topics like "race" or gender, you had better stay within heavily policed boundaries.

I don't even disagree with the goals of these people, but I think there is such ridged ideological conformity, that the quality of the thinking suffers. In other words, I am very skeptical of the solutions that they propose because I don't think they have the freedom to really consider these problems from every angle.

dj_gitmo··on 40 years later, a game for the ZX Spectrum will be again broadcast over FM radio
Was cassette tape storage more common in Europe than the U.S? I’m too young to have been around for this era, but I’ve just never seen it over here.
dj_gitmo··on J.G. Ballard predicted the rise of social media (2016)
It sounds like there is some disagreement about who first used the term. I wouldn't be surprised if they're all telling the truth. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbercovici/2010/12/09/who-co...
dj_gitmo··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro
Does anyone game on iPad? I see the sell controllers, but what am I supposed to do with all these GPUs?

dj_gitmo··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
The governments set the immigration policies. They probably think it’s easier to import doctors than fix the problems with medical schools, hospitals, doctors guilds, payment systems, ect… It is very uncharitable to view this as an attack on immigrants.
dj_gitmo··on The darker side of being a doctor (2017)
This is getting downvoted like it is some horrible bigoted remark, and I don’t think it is. It seems reasonable to me to say that immigration can paper over problems.
dj_gitmo··on Zed Decoded: Async Rust
Not the OP, but what I assume they are referring to is the ability to work on a remote host. For example if I have a Mac but I am working on a remote Linux box, VSCode will allow me to easily work sync with a repo on the remote host. It will also seamlessly handle port-forwarding for web dev.

IMO this is the best feature of VSCode.

dj_gitmo··on Washers and dryers are about to get a whole lot more efficient
I really wanted a heat-pump dryer but the problem is that they seem like they are all designed to go in tiny European closets. I am not space constrained and would like a larger dryer, with a big filter and a larger drum. It seems like everyone has problems with the filters, and I imagine that at least some of that has to do with the compact form factor.

Please trade some space for reliability and load size.

dj_gitmo··on Testing the F-35C Tailhook
Someone should get fired for choosing IBM in this case
dj_gitmo··on US will relax pollution-limiting rules for vehicle emissions
I'm not sure it's the "right" choice, but organized labor, is, and should, be an important constituency for the Democrats. Unfortunately the unions do better when Americans are buying massive trucks and SUVs.
dj_gitmo··on US will relax pollution-limiting rules for vehicle emissions
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the emissions from 10s of millions of personal vehicles is much more significant than a few thousand yachts. Don't get me wrong, I'm for adding restrictions on those things, but I see this private jet argument pop up as a way to avoid doing anything.
dj_gitmo··on Uv: Python packaging in Rust
That was one of my first questions, but Anaconda exists https://www.anaconda.com/download/

Python is used by loads of scientists, academics, and other non software engineers. Those people need an easy way to use python.

dj_gitmo··on Javalin – a simple web framework for Java and Kotlin
What are the drawbacks of these “simple” frameworks? Do you run the risk of being constrained if your requirements expand?
dj_gitmo··on Just 137 crypto miners use 2.3% of total U.S. power
Has anyone estimated when it will not longer make economic sense to mine Bitcoin?
dj_gitmo··on How Condé Nast bought and destroyed Pitchfork
New York digital media was the epicenter so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a factor, at least for the past few years. The Reply-All meltdown comes to mind.
dj_gitmo··on An extreme ice-age climate 700M years ago
I am also curious how much carbon is released to extract and spread that 3 tons. I'm guessing it's still a net carbon-negative, but that's still a lot of material to be moving around.
dj_gitmo··on How Condé Nast bought and destroyed Pitchfork
Pitchfork was the way it was before the rise of identity politics in the 2010s. They’re inconsistent but they did document a lot of music over the past decades so I can’t be too mad at them.
dj_gitmo··on When the Mac Was a Munition
I vividly remember seeing this ad as a kid. What a great gimmick.
dj_gitmo··on Wikihouse: Open-Source Houses
> I intend to build something like it someday (in the US, so it might be harder to find a manufacturer).

Its seems like every episode of Grand Design does include an almost spiritual journey to a glue-lam pre-fabricated wood factory in Germany. I’m not sure that stuff is as easy to get over here.

> how would you reuse it in a different project?

The blocks are standard sizes so you can reuse them like legos.

dj_gitmo··on Formally modeled Dreidel for no good reason
My head-cannon for Dreidel was that it invented by very bored people waiting out a siege during the Maccabean Revolt. That would explain the length of the game. Apparently it’s not nearly that old.
dj_gitmo··on Nobody knows what's happening online anymore
There was some data that suggested twitter was already in a decline before Musk. People have just been souring on social media in general.
dj_gitmo··on Progress toward a GCC-based Rust compiler
> Cohen listed a few things that gccrs is already useful for. According to him, the Sega Dreamcast homebrew community uses gccrs to create new games for the Dreamcast gaming console, and GCC plugins can already be used to perform static analysis on unsafe Rust code. The Dreamcast community's interest stems from the fact that rustc's LLVM backend does not support the Hitachi SH-4 architecture of the console, whereas GCC does; even in its incomplete state, gccrs is helpful for this embedded use case.

This is delightful.
