discobean··on Mechanical Watch: Exploded View
Couldn't you make little sticks with the same epoxy resin to hold up all the parts?
discobean··on Ask HN: SaaS Subscription or Usage-Based Pricing?
Do both

Subscription with a free tier, and usage based pricing above a certain amount.

discobean··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Mini only has small problems :)
discobean··on Sydney's underground spaghetti junction opens
It looks like something I would build in Cities Skylines - but I'm sure it's not that bad in real life once everybody gets used to it and will make things better in the long term.
discobean··on I rode with an ice road trucker to the Arctic Circle
Been following you for ages. Don't know if you remember but I saw your jeep parked in Tassie when you went hiking for a few days and we were travelling around there at the same time - I sent you the pic with my grey one. Keep it up!
discobean··on The Decomposition of Rotten Tomatoes
I'd wish there were age of reviewers. What's good for a 13 year old isn't always for a 40 year old
discobean··on Why Sam Altman wants to scan two billion eyes
The purpose of the scanning is to just have a different talking point so people will buy the coin. It is a scam like all the others. If they'd just launched it without scanning, would anybody be interested in buying it or even talking about it?
discobean··on Toyota has been developing a solid-state battery for EVs with a range of 745mi
- it "may" have solved the range and battery weight problems.

Just like every other battery announcement. Progress is progress though, so good news.

discobean··on Internet search tips
Make your tool so idiots can use it and only idiots will use it
discobean··on IBM JX – A Rebadged PCjr for the Japan/Australia/New Zealand Market
We had a JX when I was young, it was quite good, it even came with an infrared wireless keyboard!
discobean··on Company hits small SaaS with $3250 chargeback because they “forgot to cancel”
Who knows if they used it or not? Maybe it was setup ready to go and none of their customers used it?

But if they genuinely didn't use any resources, depending on the payment processor, card charge fees are not refunded - Stripe does this.

discobean··on Sydney CBD is bringing back pedestrian “beg buttons”
They should not have any sign, so everybody just presses the button, even though they are automated. This stuff just adds unnecessary confusion.
discobean··on Show HN: Domain Name Search with AI
I described a business I own (docevent.io) and it came up with 1S3Connect2FTPLinker3ConnnectoFTP4FTPMerge5S3Connector6FTPToS37FTPSync8S3Mate9S3FTPBridge.com

:)

discobean··on Bitcoin is largely controlled by a small group of investors and miners
> For early BTC holders its easy to diamond hand That's not true, say your investment of a few dollars is now $1k. And the price is popping and just dropped 30% in one day? Would you sell for the profit? What if that investment got to 10k? 100k?

People sell at some point. I'd argue it's incredibly hard to diamond hand for early holders, that is why there are more stories of people selling their coin for cheap rather than diamond hands.

discobean··on 1password is considering a self-hosted option to store vaults
too little too late
discobean··on Tesla AutoPilot – I give up, it's downright lethal
They are talking about Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC), not actually AutoPilot as most people think would be the case.

I love our Tesla, but the TACC is not that great, the most annoying part is when passing cars on the freeway it sometimes all of a sudden it thinks the car next to me that I'm passing is in the same lane, and then phantom brakes while trying to pass. It is disappointing.

discobean··on On Comments in Code
Not always, but I noticed I often find I write my comments first on what I want to achieve like a sort of psuedocode in a very high level.

Then under each one-line comment I'd write the code that does what's written.

discobean··on FTP is 50 years old
Can confirm, it is still very popular, so much so we even built a cloud service to connect FTP to your S3 or Azure buckets, to future-ise it somewhat. Come check it out if it's something you might need, https://docevent.io
discobean··on Launch HN: Chatwoot (YC W21) – Open-Source Alternative to Intercom, Zendesk
We used to use kayako.com which switches from online to email chat, but they've since updated their pricing and screwed us around a bit so we've left them.

Now we've switched to chatra.io, and this does the same and the price seems fair.

discobean··on A guide to live chat tools for startups
We use kayako.com and it is excellent!
discobean··on ARM Mac Impact on Intel
Building managed applications is where the money is at for AWS for sure, Elasticache is another good example. The beauty is their managed services are great and worry free.

Shameless plug - partly because of the high cost of sftp in AWS, and lack of ftp (understandable), and a bunch of people wanting the same in Azure / GCS, that made us start https://docevent.io which has proved quite popular.

discobean··on The Longest Record Broken: Gold/Silver Ratio Hits Highest in Over 5,000 Years
You could say it is the least worst, they have that going for them :)
discobean··on Dynamic Route53 records for AWS auto scaling groups with Terraform
I wrote and use this regularly, docker app that adds and removes instances from route53, similar to their terraform solution. Similar idea, different implementation.

discobean··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
They probably just didn't feel like calling in sick after a cold shower
discobean··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
They should have people board a plane shaped capsule/container before, then when the plane is ready they push/dock the capsule/container into the body of the plane and you fly off.
discobean··on macOS no longer allows changing wifi mac address
I recently tried this and was able to change the address of only the last few characters, it wouldn't let me change the address entirely.

I just suspected it just had a check on the first bytes of the address to be sure it was a valid Apple ethernet adapter.

discobean··on Some extinct species of crocodile were herbivores
That's why they're extinct :P
discobean··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
Thanks! You can CNAME, but for FTPS there will be certificate verification errors because the DNS is changed (there is nothing like http2 where we can serve other SSL certs for different destination hosts).

But for SFTP, and FTP (insecure, not that you'd want to) CNAME works fine.

We do do seperate SSL certs but it is only for bigger customers that we host dedicated instances on their behalf.

discobean··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
Solo founder of https://docevent.io SFTP and FTP/S directly to your Azure Blobs, Google Cloud Storage and S3 buckets.

I bootstrapped it myself, but there are now others that help remotely (consultants, contractors) on some features, fixes testing and marketing.

discobean··on Have you been faked?
So, anybody have the balls to upload their photo yet?
