digispaghetti··on How Apple avoids paying taxes in CA
Apple should just change their official status from a company to a religion and be done with all this. They certainly have enough of a fanatical following and it worked for Scientology.
digispaghetti··on I Almost Got a Job on 37Signals Job Board
A search on google now shows this link is now the top google ranked search for this guys name.
digispaghetti··on [dead]
Some really pretty stuff here!
digispaghetti··on This phone is an asshole.
The writer of this article is an Asshole

Examples:

"The first clue came during the setup process. After being forced to walkthrough a tutorial on how to use the touch keyboard, which I could not find a way to skip..."

Eh, try using the next button?

"Thereafter, I discovered software I could find no way to uninstall; programs which hung around after I was done with them with no way to quit I could find...."

Clearly he didn't look in the Settings -> Applications menu, or in the Downloads section of the market app. Also clearly doesn't understand that you don't NEED to exit Android applications, this is the point of Android multitasking.

digispaghetti··on John Resig inducted into the RIT Innovation Hall of Fame
Absolutly - JavaScript was a bit pants before jQuery, but now you can see it's influence everywhere.

Node.js is an example of 'jQuery-like' JavaScript on the server side, and pretty much every JavaScript book out there since 2005 has included a chapter on jQuery.

Big congrats to John on this achievement.

digispaghetti··on Mozilla Unveils A Pre-Alpha Test Version Of Firefox For Android
I can't even get it to install, and I have over 30mb of space left on my desire for apps - this should be more than enough to install it!
digispaghetti··on HTML5 Game Engine
Looks nice - certainly runs fast in Firefox, but couldn't get it to work in Android - however looks like a good start.
digispaghetti··on Flask: a micro web framework for Python
Reading this the documentation is really easy to read and understand. Doesn't seem to have the restrictions of Django, you could build small distributed apps that communicate over sockets or REST.

Would also hope to see good support with document databases like mongodb.

digispaghetti··on Red dust over Sydney
Reminds me of the ending of Mad Max 3 - it must suck for the locals, but it's still pretty cool.
digispaghetti··on Ask HN: How to promote Android applications?
If you feel the app is useful, there are a myriad of sites out there who may be willing to review your app (Phandroid, Android & Me, etc) which is a good place to start. Other sites related to site administration might also be good to talk to.

If the tool is free, you could also promote it via it's own website or blog and allow users to download the APK, or give them a QRCode on the site that allows them to get ti directly from the market using the barcode scanner tool

digispaghetti··on Rupert Murdoch plans charge for all news websites by next summer
What made me laugh about this article was them mentioning The Sun and "Quality Journalisim" in the same sentence. What, quality journalisim such as Ruth's impression of MS Bing? (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/2570027/Micros...)

All he'll be able to charge for on that is access to half-naked women

digispaghetti··on Will android take over iphone?
I think everyone is missing the point here that Android as devices so far haven't been great. I have a G1 and compared to the iPhone it certainly isn't sexy.

But as a platform, in the next 18 months you'll see an explosion of devices for different handset manufacturers that are all compatible with each other to to some extent - so as a developer you can write once and deploy to a range of devices, most of them phones, but some of them devices like the Zii Egg.

Don't write off Android yet. Weren't people saying the same thing about Apple years ago?

digispaghetti··on [dead]
Truly, the death of Tech Journalism. Techcrunch has always been quite terrible and now this :|
digispaghetti··on I'm calling a 'time of death' for London's Internet startup industry
Totally agree, and it's a pity he only talks about London. Up here in Edinburgh we have http://www.techmeetup.co.uk/ held within the local Uni, but all are invited and there are some clever folks there.

This meet used to be packed with techies and social media types, but recently the latter have seemed to tailed off - a few are left but seem to have a few genuinely good ideas.

I have noticed however the angel investor types aren't showing up as much but certainly there also seems to be plenty innovation funding going around within the Uni and organisations like NESTA, 4IP and EPIS.

digispaghetti··on BBC open source their "Glow" Javascript library
Sounds to me like the whole Perl thing all over again where the BBC weren't happy with the standard version so decided to write their own - which meant they could't patch it with standard Perl.

Either that or some department needed to justify their budget or be cut. Typical BBC bureaucracy and a waste of us licence payers money.

digispaghetti··on Rdrr on The Simpsons
Funniest thing is that the plot behind her head in the first picture looks like an ejaculating penis. Serendipidus timing on the capture :)
digispaghetti··on Teen diagnoses her own disease in science class
My partner was recently diagnosed with Crohn's and she had to get some major surgery to fix the damage. The doctors kept mis-diagnosing her, but it wasn't as much as 8 years.

It's a horrible genetic disease and only now are doctor's really starting to understand it - even now they are finding that there is a whole subset of diseases being lumped in as Crohn's.

And....?
digispaghetti··on Ask HN: How old were you when you got your first computer?
I think I was about 7 or 8 and I got a 48k ZX Spectrum. Was my first experience of coding - oh how I miss the old tape loading noise.
digispaghetti··on Writing fiction with GURPS
Something that people might not realised, but the Fallout series of games was originally based on GURPS, although Steve Jackson and Interplay fell out so it was never used in the end.

Here is a usenet post from 1997 detailing it: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg/msg...

digispaghetti··on The Last Question -- Isaac Asimov
This is the second time I have read this, and it is a brilliant short story pondering on the future of humanity and it's place in the universe.
digispaghetti··on 50 mb Linux livecd distro with a XUL interface and 10 second boot
It did seem to detect the device - the problem is when I clicked my SSID and put in my password, I'd click connect but it would just sit there doing nothing.
digispaghetti··on 50 mb Linux livecd distro with a XUL interface and 10 second boot
On my Acer Aspire One (1.6Ghz Atom, 1Gb ram) with a 2Mb/s USB stick I counted about 16 seconds to boot from selection, overall about 30 seconds with my BIOS boot.

Couldn't get Wifi to connect, and a lot of missing features.

Very interesting though, could be perfect for quick kisok-style applications as well as a quick boot loader - looks like the plan allowing other OS's to be booted into from it.

digispaghetti··on Ask HN: Please provide feedback for androidsnippets.org
I like it very much and have already linked to it from http://learningandroid.org. If your happy with it, I'd also like to add the feed to the site to show the latest items.
digispaghetti··on Ask HN: BuySellAds Alternative Idea?
Check out http://www.insightcommunity.com/ run by Floor64. I saw Mike Masnick do a talk in Edinburgh and he explained that rather than do ads, they get companies to sponsor conversations - in return the companies get insights into the thoughts of the community - and it seems to be working for them.
digispaghetti··on The Archive Team are here to save you from the digital apocalypse
Sorry, I had posted this earlier but the site went down while being set up.

The idea is from Jason Scott and you can read more about it here: http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/1649

digispaghetti··on [dead]
Ahh yea, server is being set up right now :) Might be a few small hitches along the way.
digispaghetti··on [dead]
As proposed by Jason Scott of textfiles.org (see http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/1649).

The idea is to have a response team ready and willing to help back up users data in the event of a service going down.

It's just starting out, but if your interested we're on #archiveteam on #Efnet

digispaghetti··on Edinburgh Hacker Meetup (Nov) wednesday
Hey Arnav, will definetly be along. Interesting that you are setting up different areas in the room, I have a G1 now so I'll be hanging about the mobile dev bit :)

See you there
