dh5··on How to Become a Data Engineer in 2021
AFAIK a "data engineer" at FB specifically is not quite equivalent to "software engineer specializing in distributed systems" which this article refers to--i.e. there is a totally separate job track for SWEs in general. The "data engineer" job title is definitely not standardized between companies.
dh5··on Uber, After Years of Trying, Is Handing Off Its Self-Driving Car Project
Looks like they will at least take a stake in Aurora.

> As part of the agreement between the two companies, Uber is taking a 26 percent stake in the start-up and Mr. Khosrowshahi will take a seat on the Aurora board of directors.

> “Uber can still have a hand in the game, without putting out the enormous amount of money they were spending with A.T.G., but still have a path to market when this technology is actually deploy-able in several years,” said Elliot Katz...

dh5··on Exploring new forms of chess using artificial intelligence
I strongly disagree with the assertion that chess is a "close to solved game" in human OTB play in particular.

Top GMs currently will probably score 0/12 against Leela/Stockfish. We see innovations frequently in recent years as we learn from engines themselves, h4/h5 pushes as a simple example, but also in terms of style like favoring rapid development and attacking play.

Yes, draws are frequent but that doesn't mean there is no excitement in long games. Rapid/blitz is damn fun to watch and play but there's a certain, different kind of elegance in carefully considered moves as well.

dh5··on Mozilla research: Browsing histories are unique enough to identify users
The point of the "backspace navigates back" extension is that alt+left is not how people were used to going back on websites.
dh5··on Trump says he will ban TikTok through executive action
I'd be 100% against it if this were any app besides one created in China. With all the spyware and protectionist policies there I don't mind so much the ban of Tiktok.
dh5··on Taxonomy anarchy hampers conservation (2012)
Safari hunters currently achieve the 'spiral horned grand slam' by killing just nine types of antelope. Recent developments in taxonomy could see them wanting to kill 25, and targeting smaller populations to do so.
dh5··on Robinhood has lured young traders, sometimes with devastating results
Twenty years is young, but is there a particular age at which someone should be "allowed" to lose money playing with stocks / options? If the minimum age for opening an account if 18, should we put further restrictions on saying, for example, you can only sell puts when above 21? There are only so many restrictions we as a society can place before it starts severely infringing on personal freedom.
dh5··on Robinhood has lured young traders, sometimes with devastating results
Agreed, some degree of personal responsibility is needed in the case of addictive behavior. Robinhood in that aspect (gamification) falls into the same category as gambling, and the only difference is that is that it comes from the Bay Area as opposed to Vegas or AC.
dh5··on 1:60 scale Boeing 777 made from manila folders
Absolutely incredible. I clicked on the link expecting nowhere near that level of detail. One of the pictures even shows individual wires on the landing gear. I'm thoroughly impressed by the dedication here.
dh5··on Remote work means anyone can take your job
Relocation is a big barrier to those already married, and even more if they have kids. That's a large portion of senior guys.
dh5··on Google deletes “communist bandits” from comments on Youtube
As an aside, I'm of the opinion that selective censorship marginalizes groups that don't readily have representation at companies like Google. I'm talking about with terms like "redneck" or even "dumb American" that we (me included) mention that go with the flow of current mainstream discourse that some groups likely find offensive. Perhaps that is why there can be a divide and we end up with such insular communities like infowars or thedonald.
dh5··on Tech workers consider escaping Silicon Valley’s sky-high rents
Not sure what the scam is. Sounds like normal supply and demand.
dh5··on Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone
Is it right to let the transgressions of the founder color the quality of the product the employees worked to make, or worse, the employees themselves?

Let's not rush to judgement. Sexual harassment is wrong, yes, but that doesn't mean anyone who has associated with the man is irredeemably guilty.

dh5··on A Kaggle Grandmaster cheated in $25k AI contest with hidden code
Unfortunately, most pet shelters get more pets than their facilities are able to handle. Unless they're a no-kill shelter (in order to be considered one they need to kill <10%), they will need to euthanize in order to make room for incoming animals. This is as opposed to promoting adoption, fostering, etc. An algorithm that can prematurely decide what animals will be adopted, or have the best chance to be, can create a perverse incentive to euthanize early the less optimal pets.
dh5··on ‘Buffett Indicator’ Warns Stocks Doomed for Worse Crash Than 2008
How is that value determined though? It's just by what people think the stock is worth. If you have more money coming in to the market the listed companies' stocks will naturally be at a higher price point.
dh5··on Immortal Game
Simple doesn't mean boring. There are many, many nuances that are only realized after playing at higher levels, and many more we haven't discovered yet as evidenced by the engines.
dh5··on China
I think it's a vocal minority that promotes those ideas and the rest follow because it's career suicide to go against it. I'm quite patriotic but not quite brave enough to go against the grain at this time.
dh5··on Why Are American Houses So Big?
Hong Kong is also 1.5 times the size of NYC with about the same population. It's not quite comparable to other countries with a much lower population to area ratio.
dh5··on Is he a record-setting marathon runner, or a cheater?
Yasso 800s are a good predictor but don't substitute for an actual time trial.
dh5··on Half of US stock fund assets are now invested in index funds
1. No, it's just something that has happened.

2. Any level of active management would make an index fund not an index fund. You'd be going to trying to pick the best-performing stocks, which is not what an index fund tries to do (capture the overall movements of the market).

3. The general advice is to have approximately a 65/25/10 split between SP500/international/extended market funds. You can adjust as desired.

4. Stock index funds are great for long-term investments, not so much for shorter ones. You can look at bond funds as well. If you have a good amount already (>100k maybe) you can schedule a free discussion with an advisor at places like Fidelity/Vanguard/CS and have them run you through the basics.

dh5··on Micro-promotions and mentorship: impact of small actions in engineering culture
That sounds very similar to the throroughly debunked "critical positivity ratio" by Losada. The paper by Brown, Sokal, Friedman criticizing it is a great and very accessible read btw:

dh5··on In a study of senior CS majors, U.S. students are tops in skills
Are you saying programming competitions are representative of "real world skills"? There's certainly a correlation in the same way the exam is but you'd be hard-pressed to say more than that.
dh5··on Bastion Fort
It's fascinating how advances in siege technology resemble fast Darwinian evolution until of course the bigger fish in planes and tanks come in and eat everything else up.
dh5··on Colin O’Brady Completes Crossing of Antarctica with Final 32-Hour Push
Those are harsh words. Great feats don't necessarily involve discovery or profit.
dh5··on Heinlein and Clarke discuss the Moon landings as they happen (2016)
It was clear from the beginning it was about beating the Soviets. The fear of the USSR achieving space superiority was very real at the time, especially after Sputnik. JFK even said in his moon speech the US needed to establish "a position of pre-eminence" and would do so with the landing.
dh5··on John Urschel Goes Pro
Average tenure in the NFL is something like 3 years. Not saying that 1.5mm minimum isn't a lot, of course.
dh5··on China now the most prolific contributor to physical sciences, engineering, math
You are highly mistaken if you believe Chinese undergraduate courses are anywhere near the difficulty of American ones. Chinese classes involve having students going to have participation counted and maybe a trivial exam at the end. There is no studying done outside of some cramming at the end of the semester. Contrast that to the stream of assignments and tests from even lower-ranked schools in the US.

You're right about the difficulty of getting into undergrad, but the system is well-known for having tremendously difficult years in middle/high school to prepare for the gaokao, and the students coasting through undergrad afterward.

I would bring up some articles to show but a cursory search doesn't reveal anything.

dh5··on Heavy-handed security searches of hotel rooms at Defcon/Black Hat
Yes. The Constitution primarily limits the powers of state/federal government (in a few narrow cases it can apply to private entities as well). A hotel would be able to set whatever restrictions it wants on guns and not be hindered by the second amendment.
dh5··on Scientists Can Read a Bird’s Brain and Predict Its Next Song
The male zebra finch, like many other songbirds, purposely attempts to sing the same song over and over without any variation, including in pitch and volume. This is because singing is primarily a courtship ritual, and females are attracted to high song stereotypy in males. A random song can be selected out of the hundreds sung daily and 80 to 90 percent of the other songs will be pretty much exactly the same.

While the research is of course impressive, it's a bit premature to extrapolate it to humans, or any other animal.
