devonnull··on Soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand
Was Twitter ever worth close to $44 billion? Just because Musk paid that much for it, doesn't mean it was worth that amount of money.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why don’t GitHub readme pages include screenshots?
As other commenters posted, maintaining screenshots is a pain. Especially with software that's regularly changing.

That said, there are more than a few GitHub readmes that contain screens. Sometimes quite a few screens. Here's an example: https://github.com/gsantner/markor

devonnull··on On why Markdown is not a good, or even a half-decent, markup language
Markdown doesn't meet the author's needs. OK, that's fine. They shouldn't use it. But others find it useful, regardless of Markdown's limitations. Which is fine, too. The markup language you use (or don't use) doesn't determine or influence the quality of what you're writing.

Use what works for you. That could be Markdown, vanilla HTML, LaTeX, DocBook, (x)roff, whatever. No need to justify your choices.

devonnull··on I must've pissed someone off at HN
What's the big deal? I'm sure this happens a lot. You're not the first, you won't be the last. Move on.

As another commenter pointed out the sooner you stop caring about invisible internet points the better.

devonnull··on Musk: Twitter has ‘Negative Cash Flow’ due to 50% drop in Ad Revenue, Debt load
Of course none of that has anything to do with the bonehead moves Musk made since taking over Twitter ...
devonnull··on Ask HN: Do we need more users to browse /newest on HN?
Why is that important?
devonnull··on Latisse Lash Serum
Spam alert!

Moderators, can you please delete this post (and maybe block the user who posted it)?

devonnull··on Ask HN: When will NASA team up with Boston Dynamics to get a space robot dog?
That's more a question for NASA than HN, don't you think? But does NASA have an actual use case for something like this, rather than just rover wheels being a very difficult thing to tackle?
devonnull··on Taliban Endorses Twitter over Threads
Wonder if Musk and co. will view this as a marketing opportunity. "Forget Threads! Twitter is the free speech nexus of the online universe!"
devonnull··on What should I learn next? Mention anything
How to juggle or do slack line.
devonnull··on McKinsey Alumni Outperforms PhDs in Founding VC-Backed Healthcare Startups
Founding a startup is one thing. But are those startups successful or sustainable? Will they be around in 5-10 years? Will they turn a profit? And will the McKinsey alums be the ones running those firms?
devonnull··on Gizmodo’s Io9 Published an Error-Filled AI-Generated Star Wars Article
Why isn't this a surprise? You can have cheap, fast, good, or accurate. If you're going with the first two of those options, you won't get the other two.
devonnull··on Write for Us
You do know it's customary for the publisher to pay the writer, not the other way 'round ...
devonnull··on Blogging vs. Blog Setups
Another title could be Fiddling with tools vs actually blogging ...
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why do people pay for Netflix when they can watch Tubi for free?
A few reasons: 1) people don't know about Tubi, 2) the pervasive ads, 3) there's no guarantee that tomorrow or next week or whenever, Tubi won't go the way of Soap2Day. Of course, as another commenter pointed out, Tubi might not be available in your country.
devonnull··on 'Smart drugs' don't make people better at a problem-solving test
You played piano for 8 hours straight, but were you 1) playing well, 2) repeating the same things over and over again, 3) doing something creative, or 4) any or all of the above?
devonnull··on Jack Dorsey: VR headsets will have people ‘drinking their food out of straws,’
Sounds like Dorsey has a major investment in Soylent and is hoping that this comes to pass.
devonnull··on I think I don't like to travel
OK, so why is that a problem? And maybe, as someone wrote, if you tried to force yourself to enjoy something you were probably trying too hard. Not everyone is going to enjoy what other profess to enjoy. And that's OK.
devonnull··on Taco Bell wants to free “Taco Tuesday” from trademark
This is how the Franchise Wars started ...
devonnull··on Cheap Essay Writers
I'll let ChatGPT do it for me for nothing. And I'll probably wind up with a better essay.

Seriously, though, can an admin please delete this spam? Thanks in advance!

devonnull··on I quit Facebook, Instagram and other social sites They became boring
Quitting HN is one thing. Getting HN to actually delete your account is something entirely different, or so I'm told.
devonnull··on What do you think of my language learning app?
The site really needs some instructions explaining how to use it. It's not really clear what's supposed to happen. Do I type something in the Say something (in English) field and click/tap *Say It*? Or do I click *Say It* and then speak? When I do the latter, an error message like this displays:

Notice: Undefined offset: 1 in /home/u477137059/domains/oh-aha.com/public_html/kendasi/other-langs/chatter-de.php on line 68

As well, is the text at the top of the page supposed to be read to me automatically? Or is something else supposed to happen?

devonnull··on Tana – The Everything OS for You
It's an OS in the form of a tool that you download from a website? I'm a tad confused about it too.
devonnull··on Ask HN: What do you choose to ignore every day?
Online comments and user reviews :-)
devonnull··on FCC threatens to block calls from carriers for letting robocalls run rampant
Threats aren't enough. The FCC needs to follow through. Will they? Doubtful.
devonnull··on I'm afraid to show the world a tool which built to solve a billion dollar issue
There are folks who will always criticize something. You're going to have to deal with that, regardless of what you do. But if you have valid counters to the criticism then use those to try to educate your detractors (and others).
devonnull··on Ash HN: Best way to drive repeat visitors to content site
Keep everything concise and to the point. If you can explain what you're writing about in 500 words, don't stretch it out to 1,500 words. If a video can walk a viewer through something in three minutes, don't make it a 10 minute video. Wherever possible, try not to wrap what you're posting in a story if it doesn't make sense to wrap it in a story. Doing that can seem forced.

And try to limit the SEO. Jamming SEO keywords into anything is really annoying to a reader.

devonnull··on Hyperlinks in Handwriting
That's a lot of work for I don't know how much gain. And, more importantly, I have to agree with a number of posters here that page (and anything like it) is an accessibility nightmare.
devonnull··on Ask HN: What apps do you use daily on your phone?
The ones I use most, aside from a couple of what you mentioned above, are wallabag (for reading) and a note taking app.
devonnull··on What the “Cult of the Founder” Gets Wrong
I always thought the VCs rolled a D20 to determine if an investment is worthwhile or not.
