Ask HN: Why do people pay for Netflix when they can watch Tubi for free?

> Tubi is the largest free movie and TV streaming service in the US. Unfortunately, we're not currently available in your area.

> Netflix is available in over 190 countries around the world. Each country has its own catalog of original and licensed TV shows and movies. The country on your account can't be changed unless you move to a new one.

I think maybe this has something to do with it.

1) Tubi has ads. 2) I despise ads. 3) I have a nice disposal income.

Simple really. What surprises me is why you even asked the question as I'd have thought the sheer fact that Tubi is financed through adverts would make it obvious why people would choose to pay for their streaming desires.

Smiling Face with Tear Emoji We're Sorry. Tubi is the largest free movie and TV streaming service in the US. Unfortunately, we're not currently available in your area.

A few reasons: 1) people don't know about Tubi, 2) the pervasive ads, 3) there's no guarantee that tomorrow or next week or whenever, Tubi won't go the way of Soap2Day. Of course, as another commenter pointed out, Tubi might not be available in your country.

That's the choice of people subscribe to Netflix (or Hulu or Apple TV+ or Amazon Prime or anything else). Paying for something doesn't make them suckers.

If it's free it must be garbage, right?

I don't do ads. Nuff said.
