What town was that in? I used to live in Jersey City and every other block in my neighborhood was listed because of hexavalent chromium contamination.
devb··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Can I ask which news? I'm already a happy Fastmail customer, just curious.
devb··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Can I ask what state/country/region you're in? What's the typical low temperature for winter in your area?
devb··on How to develop black and white film at home with coffee (2019)
Color film is based on silver halides but has built-in dye couplers and filters to represent the color details. Any color film developed with chemicals intended for black and white film will come out as black and white film. There is a Flickr group dedicated to the practice: https://www.flickr.com/groups/c41inbw/pool/

I've developed direct positive paper with caffenol in order to get a nice sepia tone. In my experience, caffenol smells terrible. If you do decide to experiment with it (and you should) I would recommend getting the absolute cheapest instant coffee you can find. The acid in robusto beans helps the reaction along.

If you're looking for a non-toxic commercial developer, Kodak's Xtol developer is based on ascorbic acid.

devb··on The Internet Has a Rat Poison Problem
I managed to control my serious ant problem by feeding them. I would set up plates of sugar or sugary food outside, away from the house. Over time I got fewer and fewer scouts coming in to the house to snoop around.
devb··on Testing Phone-Sized Faraday Bags
Are you familiar with daylight tanks for film processing? They work as advertised using right angles.
devb··on The moon blew up without warning and for no apparent reason (2017)
It was actually published today!
devb··on Campagnolo's revolutionary new gearing system from 1946
That was written to be tongue in cheek. This is not actually copy written in the 1940s.

devb··on The American Bumblebee Has Vanished from Eight States
There are at least 17 species of bumblebees in New York.
devb··on Video of Tesla FSD almost hitting pedestrian receives DMCA takedown
Two seconds of googling:

Here's one: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-pro...

Here's another: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/17/business/tesla-autopilot-...

Oh, another one: https://www.forbes.com/sites/lanceeliot/2020/05/16/lawsuit-a...

This appears to be the first one, in 2018: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/mar/19/uber-self...

I'd keep going but maybe you get the point.

devb··on Video of Tesla FSD almost hitting pedestrian receives DMCA takedown
Ok, I’ll ask. How would you describe it?
devb··on Leaded gas was a known poison the day it was invented (2016)
You don't have to suspect these things, because they are correct. Almost all spray sunscreen has been found to contain benzene:

devb··on One camera in 9 forms: a 3D printed modular medium format film camera body
It looks like the camera uses a Mamiya RB67 back. You can get an adapter from various places (e.g. http://www.silvestricamera.com/assets/files/7006_7012_Mamiya...) to act as an interface between a Hasselblad V-compatible digital back and the camera.
devb··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
Even if that were true, and it's not clear that it is, the side effects of infection are far, far worse than whatever side effects the vaccine might have.
devb··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
I'd rather get the vaccine multiple times than to be infected multiple times. I don't understand why this is controversial.
devb··on OSHA to require employers with 100 employees vaccinate or test workforce
- Acquired immunity fades with time

- You aren't required to get the vaccine, you can undergo weekly testing instead

devb··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
I've been doing this for several years, and it doesn't seem to reduce the number of ads I get. I just start getting absurdly irrelevant ads. A memorable one was for @7Up_Nigeria. I live near NYC.
devb··on Sriracha hit revenue of $150M a year with no sales team or ad spend

devb··on Alpha-Gal Syndrome
From the article (not that far in!): Signs and symptoms of an alpha-gal allergic reaction are often delayed compared with other food allergies.
devb··on Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower
Every Surly bike takes wide tires. Their Pugsley was the first mass-produced fat bike, starting back in 2005.

devb··on Let us now praise tiny ants
I'm not really into the idea of just killing everything that annoys me.
devb··on Let us now praise tiny ants
I have three cats and they don't seem to affect the ants at all. They won't eat them because they're bitter.

It's possible you're on to something. When an ant is killed/crushed, the body releases a chemical that signals the rest of the ants to go on a rampage and find whatever the threat is.

devb··on Let us now praise tiny ants
Instead of trying to keep them out, consider giving them an alternative. I put small piles of sugar outside of my house in the hopes that they won't need to go exploring for food. So far it has greatly reduced (but not eliminated) masses of ants invading my kitchen all summer.
devb··on How a carnivorous mushroom poisons its prey
Funny, I just harvested my first bloom of blue oyster mushrooms last night too. I couldn't believe how good they were.
devb··on Particle mystery: physicists confirm the muon is more magnetic than predicted
This is an incredibly complicated and abstract subject, yet you have somehow managed to boil it down into a sweeping generalization about the basics of media and reporting. Masterfully done.
devb··on Particle mystery: physicists confirm the muon is more magnetic than predicted
The NYT sort of explained that repeating the experiment in Brookhaven would have cost a lot of money but wouldn't have resulted in an increase in accuracy that was worth that amount of money. Presumable other equipment exists at Fermilab that made the move cost effective compared to other options.
devb··on Buildings made with fungi could live, grow, and then biodegrade
Old brick buildings use a limestone based mortar, which actually absorbs CO2 as it cures.
