devb··on New accounts on HN more likely to use em-dashes
> I just used them to reflect pauses in my speech for tangents - and old habit from my IRC days.

The tell here is that you used a hyphen, not an em-dash.

devb··on Rising young worker despair in the United States
[flagged]
devb··on When photography was born, fascination, obsession, and danger followed
Black and white film retains the developed silver particles, whereas color processing discards the silver entirely and leaves clouds of dye behind to form the image. The silver has higher acutance, of course.
devb··on Is Planet Nine Alone in the Outer System?
> This seems more plausible than an undiscovered big planet.

Why?

devb··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
One great reason is that you need an account on X to read the thread. I deleted my account many months ago, along with many, many other people.
devb··on First Known Photographs of Living Specimens
> but as far as I can tell

Did you actually look at the details? It's literally in rule #1:

> 1 . Any observations you add must be the first photograph(s) of that species anywhere. If an observation is the first one for that species to be uploaded to iNat, but other photos of that species from an earlier point in time already exist anywhere elsewhere online/in print, then that observation should not be added to the project. This is the biggest source of observations that I have to remove from the project. So your observation must be both the first photograph of that species on iNat and also the first anywhere.

devb··on Walt Disney's MultiPlane Camera (Filmed Feb. 13, 1957) [video]
It could have been made bigger too. Who cares?
devb··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
You don't have to be a big fucking nerd about it, you know what I meant. The generated music wouldn't exist without the foundation of stolen music made by people.
devb··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
Yes it is. How else are they "trained?"
devb··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
> I would definitely listen to AI-generated music if it were good enough

Why not just seek out the original works that the AI stole from?

devb··on Google AI recommends adding Elmer's glue to pizza cheese after scanning Reddit
> It has learned to predict the next word very well and the prediction probability distribution was later tweaked with human feedback and automated test feedback.

It didn't predict anything here, it just ripped off a reddit comment.

devb··on Why do some leading geologists reject the term "Anthropocene"?
Have you read Elizabeth Kolbert before? Or anything in the New Yorker?
devb··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
I think the alert is to try to get people to stop calling the police to ask/inform them about what they felt.
devb··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
They are feeling the p-wave, which arrives just before the s-wave that you feel as shaking: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/ask-s...
devb··on What do you do if a hacker takes control of your ship? (2023)
What is your basis for strongly believing that?
devb··on Hacking the genome of fungi for smart foods of the future
It wasn't a documentary.
devb··on Hacking the genome of fungi for smart foods of the future
There isn't enough data to say what percentage of mushrooms are toxic when uncooked. Anyway, do you eat a lot of raw meat?
devb··on Why Is the Sea So Hot?
Maybe you need to be more clear in the future.
devb··on Pilot of Boeing flight says he lost control after instrument failure
> the most likely situation

What is the value in posting a long, entirely speculative comment like this? It doesn't even appear that you have any credibility in this field. Even if you did, this comment would be useless.

devb··on The internet is slipping out of our reach
> The question has been answered - corporate entities do a much better job of curating spaces.

Do you have a citation for this, or are you just asserting it as a fact?

devb··on The first Europeans reached Ukraine 1.4M years ago, new study finds
I didn't find it to be ruined at all. It might be worth asking yourself why it bothers you so much.
devb··on I broke IKEA (2023)
Usually A calls B, and B accepts the charges. In this case, A calls B and then C is contacted to accept the charge.
devb··on Bob Moore, who founded Bob's Red Mill, has died
> the company never went public or sold to large agricultural interests to maximize shareholder value

Wow, shame on Bob :eyeroll:

devb··on Xkcd: Free Speech (2014)

devb··on Reminiscences from the end of the horse era in New York City (1952)
The first line of the article is "My memories are of New York around 1899 — when I was just a boy of seven."
devb··on Moon-forming impactor as a source of Earth's basal mantle anomalies
Why? Something to do with tidal influence on the core?
devb··on 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack
What did you use to pay for all of it?
devb··on The power of weeds to end hunger in an uncertain climate
Many species, but by actual counts the non-natives are vastly over-represented.

devb··on The power of weeds to end hunger in an uncertain climate
Dandelions are considered weeds in a botanical sense because they are non-native invasive plants in the United States. Same with clovers, crabgrasses, dallisgrass, and many other common lawn plants.
devb··on Venetian glass beads may be oldest European artifacts in North America (2021)
It's possible that they not only reached it, but spread across both American continents before Europeans arrived.
