deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Please provide your opinion on the state of React Native in 2023
Its day and night difference compared to 3 years ago (internally), but situation with libraries is still pretty much same: they die off randomly and you have to search a new solution, spending your time. Expo's stuff is mostly good and well maintained, thats something.

I use it, mostly with expo. Everything works out of the box and performance is actually surprising (because of Hermes engine), I'd say its a lot better than all other alternatives when it comes to cross platform development solution, simply because flutter is the only real competitor and flutter has few problems that makes it unbearable for me:

1) lots of copy-paste boilerplate code 2) ios apps behave weirdly in flutter (maybe they still havent fixed 1 frame lag with touch/swipe/scroll events? idk) 3) they're not using native components but implementing them on canvas. This sounds extremely prone to issues and bugs and requires them to catch up to update stuff once platform holders change something in their UI kits.

If I had to pick a tech right now, I'd go

React Native -> Jetpack Compose/Swift UI -> Flutter -> Anything else

deliriumchn··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
Page says 1000 though. Anyways this is crazy, who he thinks he is lol
deliriumchn··on A Climate Warning from the Cradle of Civilization
Thanks
deliriumchn··on A Climate Warning from the Cradle of Civilization
version without paywall?
deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Is there a tool to automate front end testing?
Idk, I never actually enjoyed it. I prefer unit tests with jest+codecov because it always was enough for me.
deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Is there a tool to automate front end testing?
Its called End to end testing (E2E) and there are plenty of frameworks to do that. For example, cypress.
deliriumchn··on Show HN: Banger.show – Create colorful visuals for your songs in seconds
8 bucks a month for exactly 3 visualisers, something that was free from 90s, not to mention that free[1] and more functional alternatives exist? I think its worth to think about your pricing strategy and adjust prices based on value provided at this moment, not in future years.

deliriumchn··on React to LiveView for Performance [audio]
thats pretty much what happens when backend developers write UI, they mostly care about some ephemeral performance (hoping that their ui will get 1k RPS or something) while performance of existing tools (vue/react/svelte/remix/solid) is already absolutely enough even for heavy cases like high interval trading
deliriumchn··on React to LiveView for Performance [audio]
not just this, but also no one knows elixir. Its a very niche language for very niche set of tasks, rewriting existing apps form react to elixir just to use liveview is a pointless overkill
deliriumchn··on Ask HN: What open-source projects are you currently contributing to and why?
This is a hard question. Before coming there I wasn't even aware of such tools existence, but if we consider me as someone working with such tools (i.e posthog/or) I would probably try to contribute.

Right now I'm planning to do some contribs to Lemmy because I'm really liking the concept

deliriumchn··on Ask HN: What open-source projects are you currently contributing to and why?
ok, this is gonna be some comedy but

Openreplay, because I actually work there :)

deliriumchn··on Google is getting a lot worse because of the Reddit blackouts
It cannot charge subs anything since they don't pay them anything. They can try to forcefully make them go public or change mods (I kinda see how it can go bad and turn into r/anarchychess) but thats kinda it.
deliriumchn··on Ask HN: How to move from dev role to management/team lead role?
> it sounds like you’re a young adventurer on the journey

Not exactly, but not very far either (6 years in including 20k+ empl companies and small startups)

Thanks for good advice. I agree with you.

deliriumchn··on Google Password Manager – Manage Your Passwords Safely and Easily
If only they had bulk deletion and separate app instead of mandatory chrome. Bitwarden/buttercup/1pass offer much better UI and cross platform experience
deliriumchn··on Firefox lost ~16M users since last year
Well, internal documentation (moments when you missclick on ? icon and open it lol) was always IE and then edge as long as I remember, as well as lockscreen image when you click on it. Other than that, windows is respecting my default browser. They do go over-invasive when you try to download another browser while using edge tho, which is shady of course, but once I changed the default browser, I never had any issues
deliriumchn··on Yet another keyboard post, or, introducing ErgoNICE
For me personally it took 2 months to "fully" adjust (meaning I can type without looking at the keyboard but every now and then I make a typo and need to correct it). I used this -> https://www.keybr.com/ almost every day. You can just set preferred layout without actually changing your keyboard's settings and it have very nice "teaching" sessions. Tbh I don't notice a huge difference, its more comfortable but sometimes I have a brain lag when I need to type on my phone since its on qwerty. Ergo layouts tends to be worse on mobile (because ergo usually have common letters close to each other and its not very cool on a small screen, qwerty is suprisingly one o f the best for smartphone's 2 thumb style)
deliriumchn··on Firefox lost ~16M users since last year
I use FF with W11 without any problems
deliriumchn··on I have reached Vim nirvana
I tried to get into vim countless times but every single time I fail because I already remember intellij keybinds and feel myself helpless without webstorm interface/ide functionality (where everything is included by default and works great with ts/react/solid).

I respect people who can and love to use it, but its simply not for me

deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
time to migrate to self hosted bitwarden...
deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
I kind of understand online services or games being a subscription, because you have to keep paying for infrastructure and devs etc etc, but apps that don't have online functionality (looking at fitbit right now...) or had its functionality forcefully replaced by an online one is just a joke.
deliriumchn··on Min: A fast, minimal browser that protects your privacy
Honestly hard to believe that its a power efficiency focused browser when it uses electron and chromium.

Besides that, I really enjoy the surge of browsers in last few years, we got orion, min, arc and I guess few more I missed

deliriumchn··on My IDE is too heavy so I moved to Emacs
> The shortcuts are just unergonomic in my opinion

Extensions -> type "emacs" -> done

I really hate this articles that scream "look I'm so old school I use vim/emacs" while emacs is a single threaded nightmare that will work worse than any IDE if you will try to configure it to make it usable for actual every day work.

deliriumchn··on Dwarf Fortress’ graphical upgrade provides a new way into a wildly wonky game
to some extent, but it will be a very small extent lol

DF is too complex in terms of world simulation (dwarfes have actual organs/limbs etc, liquids have different behavior)

deliriumchn··on Ask HN: Is AI-Assisted Coding the Start of the Death of Software Development?
as long as neural networks are not sentient developers should be safe because most of our work is not actually writing a code (even if its not CRUD but an actual R&D its usually simple and built on top of simple concepts) but understanding what owner/customer/boss/etc wants, planning and adapting the architecture and generally "seeing the future" to make something that will be expandable, upgradable and maintainable. GPT can't really do that (for now) and in the far future when the A.I will be advanced enough we will probably be the ones who'r writing promts and moderating the outputs
deliriumchn··on App Release notes in 2023 and beyond
Honestly even dry changelog is better than what most popular apps are doing right now (copy-paste "fixed bugs and improved stability" x10000)
deliriumchn··on Working with Tailwind CSS every day for 2 years
I'll be honest here, after working with tailwind for 7 months I really hate this piece of tech and really regret picking this company.

I thought it wouldn't be a big deal but after seeing unnecessary long walls of class names I'm really tired. Anything other than basic styling is an absolute pain with tailwind and I don't understand why /my company specifically/ can't just use typestyle/styled-components/css modules to separate walls of text from components. With time, I degraded to the point I where I use classnames library just to split longer class string into 3-4 smaller ones so I can split the component into multiple rows to make it look better

deliriumchn··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
I think its a positioning problem: "alternative" meat is not good enough to substitute real meat + some people just dislike meat and its taste completely, not just concerned about animal cruelty etc.

Vegetarian food can be very tasty and beautiful and it does not have to be a substitute or an imitator of meat and other non-vegan food

deliriumchn··on Sony to supply Apple with advanced image sensor for next iPhone
And they think that we're going to love it because it would be the most advanced iPhone camera they built /so far/
deliriumchn··on New EU law on gender balance on corporate boards
Why not let businesses decide? I'm pretty sure that higher positions are being hired mostly based on effectiveness and not just because they're male?

Like if women mostly get smaller salary for same work (as media claim), everyone would jump and hire them over man because its more efficient lol

deliriumchn··on Can't Unsee
Jesus some of this "correct" examples are borderline unusable for people with colorblindness. I feel like I'm being a test monkey or a neural network that's being trained to use design guidelines that some X company chose, and most of the times their guidelines have nothing to do with generally good practices
