deinonychus··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
>Keep in mind most LLM models have eventually Nuked all humanity 93% of the time in simulation games -- regardless of which government creates the model.

you have any reading on this?

deinonychus··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
>There's a proper and healthy way to live.

dude straight up said other people are Doing Life Wrong

deinonychus··on AI safety is mostly a sex cult
>And it's not at all surprising or some farfetched claim that people who enjoy having sex with someone might adopt their ideas, at least publicly, for fear of losing that sexual connection.

am i naive? in the direction you pose this, i can't imagine it's that common and if that happens i don't feel sorry for our imagined victim. being a bay area guy who attends so many orgies that AI doomerism rubs off on him? and he keeps spreading it to other people and that some substantial bulk of doomerism is due to this mechanism such that it voids the ideological purity of doomerism? i'm not a bay area guy and i haven't attended these orgies but i hope they have other shit to talk about at the orgies than AI

if the relationship is flipped - being genuinely interested in the theory but then being roped into weird sex shit that you didn't ask for, sure that that sounds predatory. a sex cult where AI is instrumental, rather than an AI cult where sex is instrumental. it would be more remarkable imo but i don't know if anyone is saying out loud that's what's happening.

deinonychus··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
i encourage someone who has been running for longer than me to chime in, but

>Why do all shoe brands have these gigantic sole cushions nowadays?

trends! barefoot running just isn't as popular anymore.

yes, i also remember seeing nike frees everywhere in the late 2000s and through the 2010s and it's my understanding it was because barefoot running was a trendy idea. and whether everyone who wore nike frees to the grocery store etc knew about barefoot running, that's why they were popular. i'm not sure if it's appropriate to say the theories are discredited, but it's clearly less popular now.

people who run seriously like that supershoes help them beat PRs, and some of that tech (bouncy foam, springy plates) has trickled down into everyday beaters. and big cushy hoka-like shoes are just comfortable.

that said there are heaps of smaller companies (vivobarefoot etc) making barefoot minimalist everyday shoes. but i don't know what people who wear those shoes wear to run in.

deinonychus··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I experienced a lot of stuff I didn't really notice how bad they were until I was off of them. Anhedonia, apathy, lack of volition, and sexual side effects. I also have trouble remembering parts of my life when I was on SSRIs.

I don't regret trying or even taking them for extended periods. They make the bad thoughts go away and raised the floor for my mood. But they also put a pretty low ceiling on it, too. I was probably on them for too long but clearly medicine doesn't have a perfect framework for handling every corner of this space, so I don't really blame anyone. There's a goldilocks zone for drug, dosage, and treatment length and I don't think I was always in it.

I've talked to many people who have bad things to say about SSRIs. On the other hand, my girlfriend is on one right now and seems very satisfied.

deinonychus··on Sticky wage norms and the real wage cost of unexpected inflation
This was fun to entertain but I don't think we live in that world.

You think it's possible that the true wage the grocery store wants to pay its employees is actually higher than the price floor? But for some reason they can't think of any other numbers to write down on the paycheck? And without the price floor they'd be forced to think for themselves and reconsider their morals and the market conditions and their balance sheet and pay $20 an hour instead of $15?

I think it's much more likely the minimum wage can be interpreted as "we would pay you even less than this if it weren't illegal." See the tipped wage. They would pay you $0 if they could.

deinonychus··on Hello, me. It's been a while
i've also been mindful of this for a few years but it's not something i've thought to talk to others about - imagine telling your friends you're addicted to podcasts.

i still walk around at home with my airpods in like a zombie, but i've found some opportunities to free my brain, like when i'm walking outside in the city for short walks i try to go airpod-free. or when i have a short drive, i listen to the radio (NTS) instead of a podcast and it reeeeallly feels great to feel unplugged and listen to my thoughts and feelings for a bit. i guess the stimulation from those activities (seeing the city, having to drive, etc) helps make it easier to unplug a bit.

other things that are obvious in hindsight: i think it's also easier for me to exist at home without ear heroin when i've slept really well, when i'm not feeling pressured or nervous, and when i'm not amped up on coffee or stims.

deinonychus··on Hello, me. It's been a while
i'm quitting smoking and kind of nervous about what it's going to be like taking breaks without having the excuse of a cigarette to get up and stretch my legs and get fresh air. i bought one of those xteink pocket-sized ereaders and i'm thinking maybe carrying that with me outside and reading for a few minutes will be an ok simulation, along with a nicotine lozenge.
deinonychus··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
maybe try your own memory, so you don't lose every scrap of data about yourself to the Book Goblins in the process.
deinonychus··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
i find it very convenient being able to, at any point in the day whether my hands are messy or my phone or a piece of paper are far from me, simply raise my wrist and say "add greek yogurt to my grocery list"
deinonychus··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
>A 500ml Diet Coke (assuming you don't mean the caffeine free version) also contains about 65 mg of caffeine, which is the same as an espresso.

that's for one shot of espresso, and most standard regularly-sized espresso drinks are served with two shots, so that's closer to 100-130 mg of caffeine

i've experimented with reducing caffeine and it's overall been a great experiment. but also i take a stimulant for adhd so you could imagine it's easy for me to overdose on caffeine while i already have other uppers in my system. when medicated, a coke zero is basically the perfect amount of caffeine for me if i need a pep without becoming a nervous wreck

deinonychus··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
>… but he won’t get young men to sleep in at 8pm

i've never had a problem with staying or even falling asleep, instead my issue is *wanting* to go to bed and getting myself there. adhd, executive dysfunctoning/akrasia, screens, chores i procrastinated all evening, etc, all give me too many things to do at night instead of tucking myself into bed. i basically don't feel tired at all until i lay down. i don't notice i'm mentally wiped until i start bottomfragging in a video game at 2 am.

i've taken melatonin (and magnesium) for a long time, but only in the past few months i started taking it like 3 hours before bed, after reading scott alexander's psychiatry website, instead of right beforehand.

i also happen to have been recently RXd a drug called guanfacine which dampens sympathetic activity (think fight-or-flight) and when i take it with the above pills, i finally *feel* tired at 10 pm. my body is heavy and slow and my brain starts craving being turned off. it's remarkable. there's something about *feeling* tired that is humbling and makes me feel human. weird!

BJ et all aren't joking when they say the biggest performance enhancer is sleep and especially regularity. i would rather sleep 6 hours and wake up at my normal time, than slide my schedule around and hit 8 and sleep in. but when i hit 8 on my usual schedule it's like i have superpowers. i don't make gains at the gym unless i sleep well. and it's such a funny thing to say out loud, but i don't need coffee when i'm rested. when i'm rested and take a coffee, it feels like i just drank 3 coffees and i'm ODing on top of my natural alertness.

you can just french toast anything you have laying around in your fridge or kitchen. they can't stop you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hB42iztkzVQ

i've done the french toast pizza and it wasn't bad. not sure if it was worth the effort. maybe there's an ideal type of pizza or combo of toppings that makes this spectacular. either way it's worth trying once just to say you did.

deinonychus··on Semaglutide improves knee osteoarthritis independant of weight loss
That’s really neat.

I’m ashamed that I have this wish that I were overweight and had an excuse to try a GLP1 just to see how it would affect my impulse control with non-food habits.

I guess there’s not much stopping me from buying some unregulated drugs from the internet and self-experimenting, but I haven’t heard experiences from people deliberately using them for anything but weight.

it's a shame it really feels this way! i discovered some fun social apps recently like Bump and Retro that are a refreshing break from the big algoscrollers, but all my friends are either too locked into the existing big social apps or are determined to not mess with any social apps at all.
