deepakg··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Aluminum in beer cans has been subject to aluminum tariffs since April (was 25% initially and was upped to 50%).[^1]

Because they didn't use the right specificity in the announcement (used an 8 digit HTS vs 10 digit), there was some confusion for a few weeks if Beer in glass bottles was subject to it as well.

There is now an FAQ on CBP's website clarifying it is not [^2]. And they've updated to the right specificity in the new lists.

> Is HTS 2203.00.0030, Beer made from malt, In containers each holding not over 4 liters, In glass containers; subject to Section 232 duties? > No.

But yes, effective 18 August, they broadened the list a whole lot more and added things from condensed milk to deodorant to both steel and aluminum lists. An absolute nightmare for FMCG supply chain to have to figure this out.

You can agree or disagree with the current administration's trade policy but hopefully, even the staunchest proponents will admit that the execution has been sub-par. With u-turns (sometimes leaving partner countries fuming because the final published tariffs were not what were negotiated[^3]), lack of clarity and changes that land on Friday night after work hours and go into effect on Monday midnight.

deepakg··on Bringing 19th century ornamental tile illustrations into a 21st century web app
The catalog from which I took the tiles mentions their manufacturing process in passing:

> The colours are at least one-quarter-inch thick, backed up to a full thickness of seven-eighth inch thick of pure granite sand and Portland cement, subjected to a high pressure in steel moulds, after which the tiles are immersed in water for a certain period, to render the material thoroughly sound, in the usual way adopted for a concrete of the highest quality. Being so constructed, the material — after being thoroughly matured — is quite impervious to moisture, is frostproof, and is eminently adapted for any class of flooring, — particularly where great durability is of utmost importance.

I wonder if I'll ever come across any in real life in some old building in Europe and if their hope of "great durability" extended to 120+ years :-)

deepakg··on Dutch E-Bike startup VanMoof unable to pay the bills
People I know swear by: https://cowboy.com

They send the service technician to you. Saw it first hand - the service person came in a van that had all the tools and replacement parts. Not sure if it is better cost wise for them than having a workshop. Also not sure how well it'll scale.

I've also seen local shops help with minor repair (like seat change), but I doubt they'll be able to help with something more extensive with the drivetrain or battery.

I never got a Vanmoof because the version I test rode (an older model from a couple of years ago) jerked/made a distinct noise when it'd switch gears. Also, don't have room to plug the whole bike somewhere. Detachable battery was a must have for me.

Currently browsing more established bike brands here like Batavus and Gazelle. They are not as sleek, but are trying. I wonder if Vanmoof might have poisoned the well for smaller startups in this space. I'd definitely be wary of giving this kind of money to a non-established brand.

A little tangential, but I'd highly recommend Siddhartha Mukherjee's The Emperor of All Maladies.

It really helped me appreciate how we went from treating people with anything that'd kill their cells to highly specific drugs that target genetic pathways.

deepakg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2023)
Seenons (Amsterdam/Berlin) | Backend/Frontend | Remote or on-site | Full-time | https://seenons.com/en/home/

Waste is a growing worldwide challenge. Each year, in the Netherlands alone, we send 2.75 megatons of waste to the incinerator or to landfill. That is the equivalent of 76 million wheelie bins of valuable materials! This needs to change and that’s why Seenons was started in 2019 with a clear mission to save as much materials from waste as possible and speed up the transition towards a circular economy.

We are looking for frontend, backend and integration engineers. More details:

Our current stack uses Typescript, Vue, PostgreSQL with some Python. It's still early days for us. You will be part of a small team with meaningful scope, high impact and a real chance to make our world a better place.

Please apply through the recruitee links above or get in touch deepak@seenons.com.

No agencies please.

deepakg··on Ask HN: Favorite note-taking software?
For short notes I've been using deft[1] on emacs. It gives a Notational Velocity like interface for searching/viewing within emacs. The actual note-taking is via org-mode.

For notes from online courses, I recently started using the stock Notes app on macOS/iOS because of the Pencil support on the iPad.

Not sure if this helps as I don't know what platform/editor you use and I wouldn't expect you to switch either for note taking :)

deepakg··on Amazon Pushes Facial Recognition to Police, Critics See Surveillance Risk
Indeed! I recently tried Rekognition's "celebrity detection" and was surprised at the no. of false positives - "doppelgänger detection" would've been more like it.

Some examples: https://medium.com/@deepak.gulati/trying-amazon-rekognition-...

That said, it could flag faces for manual screening. Or cross reference other data (License plates, Geo data from phone) to boost confidence. Also, once they get more data as part of some of these deals they'll get better.

But in Denmark, one pays high taxes which, among other things, go towards subsidising higher education:

Spotify does, but you need to follow the artist from the artist page. I get a push a notification on the iPhone and a notification on the Mac desktop app. That said, sometimes an album being out doesn't necessarily mean it being available on Spotify in your country.
