de_keyboard··on ThinkPad’s 30th Anniversary: An Insider’s Perspective
If Lenovo guaranteed Ubuntu support out-of-the-box for the ThinkPad Carbon models (and I mean proper support, like no configuring, finger-print reader working etc.) then I wouldn't have switched to macOS.
de_keyboard··on Figma vs. Adobe XD
I hate it but will probably pick up some stock.
de_keyboard··on When cities treated cars as dangerous intruders
It's nowhere near Amsterdam I'm afraid. Biking in NYC is pretty scary and vast amounts of public space are given over to car parking.

(BTW, I am lumping in biking with "walkable". A better term is "active travel")

de_keyboard··on Chumsky, a Rust parser-combinator library with error recovery
I'm interested in how this library handles recursion, e.g.

   Expr = '(' Expr ')'
        | Expr '+' Expr
It's very easy to get stuck into infinite loops when handling recursion in parser-combinator libraries.

Does this library improve on that?

de_keyboard··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Direct competition for labour. If writers can earn more on Substack then NYT input costs rise.
de_keyboard··on We Halved Go Monorepo CI Build Time
Monorepos have the big advantage that cross-project changes can be made together in one PR.
de_keyboard··on I Lost $150K in a Day
I really enjoyed this piece, and it is probably more interesting than the comments (you know who you are). The quote at the end is a great take-away. How do you know you are good at trading or just got lucky? How long will it take to work that out? And is it worth the energy?
de_keyboard··on Nerdle = Like Wordle but with Equations
This... doesn't work well. There are too many possible solutions given the clues, making it just luck.

Consider:

   2 + _ + 8 = 1 _
Now _ could be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0
de_keyboard··on We used C++20 to eliminate a class of runtime bugs
Can we agree that the new "best default" way of instantiating is... pretty damn weird?

    auto foo = std::make_unique<Foo>(args);
Think about explaining this to a new C++ developer.

This will feel much more natural to most developers:

    var foo = new Foo(args);
de_keyboard··on ‘I felt powerless – so I started filming’: CyclingMikey vs. dangerous drivers
1. He is not a vigilante because he is merely reporting evidence to the proper authorities. A vigilante takes interpretation, defence and sentencing into their own hands.

2. UK police have actually asked road users to do this since they do not have the resources to be everywhere.

de_keyboard··on ‘I felt powerless – so I started filming’: CyclingMikey vs. dangerous drivers
I've watched quite a few of his videos and observed it myself. Endless people claiming they never do it while moving, but it's an outright lie. Besides, phone use while stationary creates congestion since it slows reaction to the traffic signal by several seconds for every driver doing it.
de_keyboard··on Uncomfortable Truths in Software Engineering
It's hard to complete with JavaScript on client and server. How's the Ruby to JS story these days?
de_keyboard··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
The UK government absolutely did this.
de_keyboard··on Study: Most Dog Breeds Highly Inbred
I find the idea of purposefully breeding dogs with short legs, stubby noses, etc. repulsive. Why do people do it? Wouldn't they prefer a pet without health issues?
de_keyboard··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Sort of... ultimately you can't provide access to nature and destroy nature. However, policy in most developed countries is exactly this. I am advocating a balanced approach where people have access to nature in a way that is less damaging.

e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/nov/14/tourists-car...

de_keyboard··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Cities are great for preserving nature because the alternative is suburban sprawl. However, we definitely need greener cities and better car-free access to nature. Good train links with local buses are a proven solution.
de_keyboard··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
Because you've been working all week so you're at peak tiredness
de_keyboard··on What's next for language design? (2017)
function types are structural in most nominally-typed languages I have used, perhaps a poor example?
de_keyboard··on Hopepunk, optimism, purity, and futures of hard work
I also subscriber to (1), and I agree that conditions are generally improving for most people. I think some of the pushback against Pinker is that his message is used as a justification to do no more. There's a reason that the worst of the right love to promote him.
de_keyboard··on Why isn’t British ‘sleaze’ called what it is?
I think Keir Starmer (leader of the opposition) is responsible for the popularity of the term "sleaze"? He chose the wording for PMQs.
de_keyboard··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
- Install .NET 6

- Install Visual Studio Code (you probably have it already)

- Install Ionide extension

- Create a new `.fsx` file

- Start writing code :)

This is by far the quickest way to build something simple on .NET. It doesn't even require a package manifest to pull in dependencies.

And it works on all major platforms.

de_keyboard··on Campagnolo's revolutionary new gearing system from 1946
Charlie Alliston should have been using a front brake, but a few things got lost in the media frenzy:

- More pedestrians are killed by motor vehicle than bikes in London BY FAR

- More cyclists are killed by motor vehicles than bikes in London BY FAR

- More motorists are killed by motor vehicles than bikes in London BY FAR

It was incredibly depressing to watch people spend so much attention on one (pretty rare!) case rather the real sources of road danger in the city.

de_keyboard··on YAML: It's Time to Move On
Does Dhall have a .NET implementation yet?
de_keyboard··on Upcoming Features in Go 1.18
Cobol has way less market share than it did a few decades ago.
de_keyboard··on Reflecting on the Shake Build System
Buck is (in my view) better designed than Bazel, particularly around how outputs are identified, but the inertia is with Bazel at this point. Too bad.
de_keyboard··on Show HN: WebFrame: F# framework for rapid prototyping with ASP.NET Core
Totally missing the point. A good web framework lets you get running with a few lines but then allows you to add custom logic with minimal incidental complexity.
de_keyboard··on M1 Pro First Impressions: Core Management and CPU Performance
If you're not streets ahead then you're streets behind.
de_keyboard··on Coconut: Simple, elegant, Pythonic functional programming
In F# you can type everything with `obj` and dynamic casting all over - not recommended but strictly speaking typing is optional there too.
de_keyboard··on Coconut: Simple, elegant, Pythonic functional programming
Nice idea! An emerging alternative to this is Python support in Fable.

https://github.com/fable-compiler/Fable.Python

de_keyboard··on Go 1.18 will embed source version information into binaries
Can you ever really trust this info? I think that the deployment manifest is the only thing you can really trust.
